yes. It doesn't matter to me what the Protagonists Sexual Prefrence is.
As long as the games good I don't really care.

if it was the standard "save the damsel (or in this case the boyfriend) in distress" plot then yes I'd play as a gay character.
I'd play as a gay character anyway but this is a game I want to see.

and I don't know about anyone else on this site but a gay version of duke nukem would just be friggin hilarious

I had an idea, since most games your characters gender is usually unknown of, such as in the COD franchise, I'm going to begin assuming all my characters are gay, this will be an interesting experience.

Anyway no I don't mind, just so long as they don't shove it down my throat and go "HE'S GAY" every two minutes.

If Solid Snake turned out to be gay, I'd find it a brave thing for Kojima to do. I'd still play and I'd still love the character as much as I do.

Every answer on this thread seems to be "Yeah, as long as it doesn't define the character."
What?!

As much as people like to believe that gays have equal rights and receive equal treatment, they don't. Anywhere. If you have an openly gay character, the manner in which he or she interacts with the world will HAVE to account for gays being second rate citizens. Having the character's sexuality not matter in the plot would be like having the presence of an Apostate not matter in Dragon Age. It would be dumb.

And a closeted gay character (unless the game is the story of them coming out) will be exactly the same as any asexual straight character! But then again, from some of the answers in this thread, it seems most people prefer their characters to be asexual. Why are we actually demanding flat characters and then appealing for better characterization? Better characterization would come from something like a gay character who DOES shove it in your face!

Ugh. There's a really good episode of Extra Credits that voices my feelings on this.

I'd rather people just come out and say they don't want any icky gays in their games than to continue to demand lifeless characters...

Just so long as its not a main point of the character and they still "Man Up" when it comes to needing it.

Doesn't matter to me. As long as the character isn't a stereotypically flamboyant/butch (depending on the sex) character just beacuse they are gay then it's fine to do. The character (not the main one) from Persona 3, who's name I can't think of is a good example of how to make good homosexual characters in games imo.
You mean Kanji from Persona 4? I was angry I didn't get to romance him. Or Yosuke, I hit on him at every in game opportunity and still got nothing, I didn't even get rejected.

Next time you play a game tell yourself that the main character is gay. Even if it has nothing to hint it's true it still makes the story feel completely different. My protagonist in Pokemon Black is also gay, I feel it makes him more caring to his companions while still being tough.

I don't really care, as long as the game is good and the characters are interesting and well depicted, then I'd play any game.

Judging by some of the interactions with the macho characters in lots of shooters these days, I get the feeling I already have played games with gay main characters- albeit closeted ones.

Don't see how openly gay would change that. I admit that things like sex scenes between guys is a little discomforting to watch though not enough to make me rage quit, stop or take a cold shower or something. Certainly a new story perspective waiting to be done well, along with other stories about gay people. It's a look inside a perspective I don't share in do to different sexuality- no less interesting to learn about though

State the game, the character and a yes or no.
The character could be lesbain also but don't say yes because you think it would be hot if the main character lesbain.

For me yes infact it would maybe make it more reason to play the game because then atleast the character would be interesting instead of generic spacemarine.
I played the first half of Devil May Cry 4 and Final Fantasy X, so obviously yes.
Zing!
OP: Of course. Was this supposed to be a hard question?

a characters sexuality wouldn't affect my opinion of the game! although most of the games i play are kid's games so love interests of any kind are at a bit of a minimum :p i mean i can't really picture kirby making out with metaknight.... no, it would seem i can :D

If it was a good game and written well, hell yes!

Actually Ballad of Gay Tony is probably one of my favorite GTAs, although you don't play as a gay character it does focus on one.

Just as long as they do not do it in a totally tacky and overdone way.
Same goes for games where you play as a female character.

If a character in one of my games was gay, I would throw down the controller in anger and frustration and start filing lawsuits to the developers.

No seriously, it can be a very good thing (look at persona 4). Only people that discriminate for some reason (but still a reason you probably know) would mind. Just because a person would fall in love with someone the same gender as him / her does not mean it's not a human. I don't mind it at all. I would judge them the way I would judge anyone else.

In most cases. For instance, if Leon from Resident Evil 2 and 4 was gay, that would not make him any less awesome. This would apply to most games. However, for games where the hero being some kind of Don Juan is a major element, such as The Witcher or Alpha Protocol or perhaps a Duke Nukem game (never played them so can't really say) I might not. If the character's homosexuality was constantly being shoved in your face it might lessen my enjoyment of the game. After all, I wouldn't read a romance novel where the couple were gays, because I wouldn't enjoy it.

Duke Nukem had to have been gay. No one not DEEP in the closet could have overcompensated that much.

Yeah, pretty much I would play pretty much any game with a gay character, main/friend/antagonist.
Buah hahahah ha...hahahahh.... that was funny...

OT: Yeah, in fact I try to avoid games where the protagonist (and company) are all stereotypical white strait males.

Like Gears of War or Call of Duty or any of their ripoffs or Bulletstorm where even the girls act like white strait males.
