Would you still play a game if the main character was gay?

Dude, have you seen how popular Robot Unicorn Attack is?

As long as it's made of pure awesome, people don't care how gay it is.

as long as the character isn't camp gay (like big gay al from South Park) and only if the game is fun.
PS
also what about the ME games? you could make Sheppard gay (making him a gay main character) and the the Confirmed Bachelor/Cherchez La Femme would make the Courier gay so in other words there are already games where your main character can be gay/bi sexual.

Why not? Just a character after all. Sure, it's a different perspective, but in all honesty, I've impersonated weirder things in videogaming before and it has never been much of a big deal.

Plus, I'm bisexual, so no, no probs at all there.

I would really play any game where the protagonist is gay, it really does not matter to me as i am not homophobic or heavily religeous (i would play any game with the exception of 1 string of games, the duke nukem games because then the stripper parts would just confuse me)

I would definitely play a game where the main character was someone like Kanji Tatsumi.

I would stay far away from anything with a main character who was like Zevran.

Well...while not being a major character

Arcade Gannon is gay...and while he isnt flamboyant like everyone thinks a gay person is...its amusing to hear some of what he has to say (ala "For Aud Lang Syne")

I doubt I would ever make a decision on whether or not to play the games I play based on the sexuality of the main character. I mean, who says that the main characters in some games aren't gay already and we simply didn't know because it never came up? Ever think the reason Mario never gets laid with Peach might be because she isn't his type and he's just rescuing her because he is a hero and legitimately nice guy? Who knows? Maybe he is more into Waluigi...

What? Stop looking at me like that, I was just saying... O_O

as long as it's not a porn game, yes.
though i wouldn't play games those anyways so it dosen't really matter if it's gay or not.

there has to be a good reason for it. If so than yes.

If not, no. I don't play a character whose sexual predilections are there simply for shock value.

As long as their wasn't an unavoidable unskippable graphic sex scene I wouldn't give a good gorram what their orientation was.

Yes, as long as it wasn't the one characteristic that defines him/her, they'd need a good background and personality (Which for the record with a requirement of mine for all characters gay/straight). For example if it's a hardbitten and cynical private eye in a noir science fiction future who investigates crimes in Old New York and lives his male life partner who is a bi-polar painter in a run-down loft, with a clunky robot butler. That game I'd play.

I want that game so much it's scary.

OT: yeah, assuming that's not the ONLY thing they have going for them, I mean Interesting characters are far more important.

Yeah.

Why this is even an issue anymore, I don't know. Some people need to grow a set and get over it. And if religion is your excuse, start taking life-lessons from something that isn't 1000s of years old.

Absolutely! I would love for a bit of sexual diversity in games, where it is dearly needed. For a good example of this, look at Kanji from Persona 4. It sounds like I'm parroting that episode of Extra Credits, but I beat P4 WAAAY before I came to this site.

The problem with putting gay characters in games is that the developer would probably feel the need to make sure we KNOW they're gay, whereas if they're straight the sexuality of the character would probably be completely unremarkable.

I have no problem with playing a game where the main character is gay, but I don't see how it could be incorporated effectively into the story without seeming like pointless pandering. And if it can't be incorporated into the story, what's the point?

In Half Life we assume Gordon Freeman is straight even though he never says a word, just because Alyx seems to be interested in him. In The Darkness Jackie is straight and has a girlfriend. Would it make a difference if that were a boyfriend? To some people, maybe. In Halo the Master Chief doesn't really have a sexual identity unless you consider his bond with Cortana to be some kind of platonic love - of course there's novels where he supposedly has a girlfriend in the form of a Spartan named Linda, but I don't consider the Halo novels anything more than fanfic anyway.
Then there's Gears of War where Marcus and Dom share a barely suppressed bromance, complete with Brokeback Mountain references in the co-op achievements. I'm sure the inclusion of Anya as a squad member in Gears 3 will result in Marcus/Anya romance, but I secretly hope they make Marcus/Dom canonical just to generate fanboy rage.

Any romance storyline in a game needs to be relevant to the story. Most games don't have romance storylines, and a large number of the ones that do allow you to choose if your character pursues a homosexual relationship if you want. Dragon Age, Fable 2 and 3... sure, Mass Effect doesn't, but there's no real need for Manshep to pursue Garrus or Femshep to pursue Tali. You could do it if you wanted, I guess, but does it make sense in the story for Garrus to be receptive to Manshep or Tali to Femshep? Is it necessary?

Sure, but I'd be given pause if it was used as the game's main selling point or felt utterly token or stereotyped. And for any developers making a hypothetical game with a gay main character, for God's sake stand up to the inevitable manufactured howls of outrage from Fox et al.
