Would you use a teleporter?

Well for all intents and purposes the new copy of me is me. Yes the original would have been destroyed but this new copy would have the exact same body as me and the exact same memories of me, and since the old me is gone this new me is, well, me.

So yeah I'd use it so long as there wasn't any weird side effects like parts missing or ending up in the wrong place. It takes an hour to walk to some of my college courses so if I could get their nearly instantaneously then that would allow me to use my time to do more stuff. Plus it would totally remove travel time for alot of things so rather than have to spend time going to someplace you could just teleport.

Seem alot of people have the idea we are some sort of fairytale creatures, created magically with pixy dust and fluffy clouds, and we can only travel with magic...
Ya, we are actually just incredibly sophisticated and complex machines, still beyond our own comprehension, but we are only made of energy and atoms, so copy/pasting in theory isn't an issue.

But as every device has tolerances, even very small ones, on that amount of data... the results would be interesting :D

I'd have to test the device with something living before I use it, like a pig or something. If the pig lives when it reaches the other side, I'll give it a try.
If there's nothing left but crispy bacon, I'll consider walking.

What are you talking about. I already teleport to school every day!

Also, every atom in you body is constantly being replaced. I've heard say (don't quote me on this) it takes about a year for every particle in your body to be replaced.

The teleporter challenges the very notion of death really. By all conventional knowledge, teleporting a living being should be impossible to do, and is basically the same as being able to create new life
I was going to say yes, but this has changed my mind. So you get broken down into molecules, and then rebuilt, how could that body suddenly have life?
If all the molecules and all the energy was replaced exactly as it was when you entered, that energy and the fact that you were in the same state (temperature, all moving blood now moving again et cetera) would mean that the newly formed body would be alive.

But I even think about how my conscience is broken when I sleep and therefore I could technically die and be remade without noticing. As you can imagine, I don't fall asleep easily.

And I now hate the idea of teleporting after the first ten posts...

Discounting the fact that for a Star Trek style teleporter the necessary calculations will take longer than the age of the universe, and the energy required is more than exists in the entire universe, then yes.

I meen they can make it brake all the laws of physics already, so there is no reason why it shouldn't be safe enough to use.

To the people posting about horrible accidents, this thread is supposed to be about the whole stream of consciousness thing.

As long as we're not talking some kind of The Prestige-situation, I don't see the problem with it.

In a heartbeat =D

I would like to hope that if it went a bit pear-shaped it would all be over in a hurry, if necessary go ahead and anaesthetise me first. But I'll do it.

Nope. Never am I ever going to use a teleporter ever ever EVER. And by the way, that's probably the least disgusting image you'll see from the Fly.

as long as it works like it does in the films (i.e all of me end up in the same place with no side effects) i'd do it.

Sure I would. I have so many people I wan't to meet around the world that teleportation would be a dream come true.

I would.

But then I'd probably be shot out of a giant man-cannon calibrated to Alpha Centauri if someone merely told me a) it was totally safe and b) I'd totally get paid for it when I got there.

To quote the late, great DeForest Kelly... "I signed aboard this ship to practice medicine, not to have my atoms scattered back and forth across space by this gadget!"
