Probably not, I mean it's more than a bit geeky to have a katana, especially for no reason other than it looks fancy. Plus I'm not into that hole area of Japanese culture, katanas are very over rated because of a lot of anime, they're just swords and if you watched Deadliest Warrior then you'd see that they're no better than western medieval long swords which are probably better in many respects.

Personaly I'd rather have a gun, you could easily get one for the same price as one of your fancy real katanas, and who would win in that fight?

I'd probably really like a kukri knife though, not about finesse or showing off but just raw brute power and hacking, chopping and severing your enemies. Also useful for other things in terms of survial aspects, better than a sword for sure.

Yea, I'd like one. But even more a Naginata or something like that.

Too bad there's no place to practise Kendo/Iaido or Naginata here... =/

Yeah, I'd keep one if I could. But it costs money so most likely I'll never have one.
The tea shop at the store had the coolest katana set with a helm wrapped in white leather.

It's better to have a tool than not have a tool, so gimme. Should I have a Katana? I'd probably say no.

Oh fuck yes. I know most people have gave the exact same answear but still it would be awesome if friends came over and they were like
Friends:"Hey whats that on your wall? Is that like a sword replica or something?"
Me:No... thats my Katana, my real Katana.

I'm sorry I know that sounds really douchebaggy but God I would want one so badly.

I watch anime, but i don't obsess over katana's. At the end of the day they are just swords, and how good a sword is very much depends on the situation and who's wielding it. I wouldn't attack a Roman shield wall with a katana unless i had a deathwish, but as for attacking unarmoured poorly organised opponents? Sure. However, a Danish war axe might be more fun. :p

If i was to choose what sort of sword i could have, i would go with the spatha. Nice looking weapon and from an historical era which interests me.

If i wanted a sword that excells at killing power, then i would choose the pattern 1796 light cavalry sabre.

Or, if i wanted a weapon for self defense, i would choose a gun, or more specifically a pistol. Probably a Glock 19.

I'd have it in my room so if I was in a middle of a discussion I would always have the "do you want me to go get the katana?" argument.

I'd want a katana so I could stab myself in the guts whenever I shamed my family

Like at the dinner table, for instance.

I am at a fancy dinner party with other guests and with my entire family, when suddenly... I drop the dinner fork.

Dad looks at me and shakes his head. "You have shamed me, son. Now you must repent this shame on yourself"
Than I could go all like "I have shamed my family", grab the katana, gut myself and fall down to the floor and die.

Than dad would look over at me lying on the floor, catching my last breath and say "It was a good death" and than continue eating undisturbed like everyone else.

...Wait a minute, I don't live in medieval Japan! Ohooooh!

A katana is a sword, which, at the end of the day, is a tool for killing. Much like a hammer is a tool for hitting nails and other such items. I don't want a sword, I have no need to kill anyone, in the same fashion I don't want a socket wrench as I have nothing that I need to use a socket wrench on. Should I find myself with a need to kill someone, I'll use a knife (being British, guns are hard to come by).

I like swords, both the use of them and the artistry that goes into making them, so I certainly wouldn't say no to a katana.

That being said, I would have no idea how to use it. I'm a pretty good epee fencer, and as such I'd prefer a sword designed for stabbing. A rapier would be quite nice, but given the choice I'd go for a jian. They're Chinese straight swords which are designed principally for stabbing; however, they're slightly smaller than rapiers, so they're less cumbersome, and can realistically be used for cutting as well. On top of all this, a well-made one is just beautiful to look at.

"Can't get through this damn spine!"

"CHOMP!"

I'd want one just so I can swing it around and keep it in my room.

I would love to have a katana. Preferably a proper one; but I have no idea how to get a hold of one, and I imagine they are incredibly expensive.

Edit: When I say proper, I of course mean one that is made in the traditional manner, with tamahagane and everything.

They're just so elegant. I've got a few swords lying around, but none of them are katana, only one is sharp, and none are of the quality of a proper katana.
