They could always try to use a system similar to Dragon's Dogma, free roaming in areas while you beat up monsters. Perhaps though they make areas instanced by vast, so there is a chance for a larger world instead of a peice of a country like Dragon's Dogma.Creating a game from scratch is even more of a risk then using a pre existing property, and Dogma has proven to be moderate in sucsess at bet. I thought I heard rumors it only sold 90K in America, but that might have been first week sales...j-e-f-f-e-r-s said:Not necessarily. Firstly, BoF already came out, and was incredibly different to either. Secondly, the differences between III and IV aren't that great. It was mostly just the nerfed Dragon system, and the fact that the world wasn't quite expansive before. Both of which the developers could easily rectify for a new game.Zaik said:not really. Liked 3, hated 4 and never bothered to finish it. 5 will inevitably be closer to 4 than 3.
One of my favourite things about the BoF series is that while the games ostensibly take place in different settings, when you squint your eyes a bit, you can see the threads that connect them, albeit sometimes very loosely. With that in mind, I imagine it would be pretty easy to create a setting that sits inbetween, for instance, Dragon Quarter's dieselpunk setting and III's post-civilisation fantasy setting. Maybe when the goddess Myria has just ascended, and civilisation is beginning the downward slide as a result.dragongit said:I think the series has just as much potential as Final Fantasy, even moreso by having actual consistant world in which they live in. Granted there is a chance it's not always the same world. I would like to see however a return to the classic fantasy setting instead of the more... I guess gritty setting of Dragon Quarter. Though I guess the actual setting if there is a timeline, would need to be set long before or long after Dragon Quarter so as to not share the same asthetics.
Part of the problem is that JRPGs have become a niche genre, whereas in the PSX days they were the genre. As long as Capcom feels that a new BoF game would only have a niche audience, the best we can hope for is a new handheld game. Console games are expensive now, and I don't see Capcom being willing to pony up $20 million to resurrect a cult RPG series from back in the day. Us BoF have to face it, the series never had the recognition or bankability of something like the Final Fantasy series.I'd perfer it to be on a console then say a handheld, by the fact I don't like playing handheld games. Having my head turned down that long makes my neck hurt. Their excuse before to not make more sequels was due to an oversaturated RPG market. If anything, the opposite can be said now adays. Except for a few western RPGs, some JRPGs that don't even make it into the states, RPGs aren't flooding the market like they used to. As for voice acting, yea it can be a hit or miss. Final Fantasy X was a bad example of this happening, but if done right it can be good. Especially if they just decide to make Ryu mute which in many games is actually true, and just some mechanic to avoid having the main character not having a personality.
I loved Dragon's Dogma, showing capcom is still interested in RPGs to begin with, I don't see why not then, to reintroduce the series into the next age. It's been 10 years since a new game was developed, and I could definatly see it having potential to being awesome, as long as they don't strive too far from the givin formula again like Dragon Quarter. I liked the game no doubts there, but I'd like to see the fantasy setting return.
The other problem is that RPG mechanics have advanced so far since the PSX days, Capcom would have to update the format by default if they don't want the game to be seen as a fossil from the past. Random battles and purely turn-based combat are a surefire way to get negative reviews from sites like IGN nowadays.
Not pointing this out to be a jerk (I hate the fact that this even needs explaining, and it is admittedly rather off topic), but FF13's system IS turn based. It's a version of the ATB system from the other FF games. You have a party of three that selects actions from menus in a turn-based combat system.DoomyMcDoom said:hell yeah, I loved the breath of fire series, it's one of the best jrpg series out there, hands down, and with what systems can do nowadays they could do some pretty awesome stuff with that world with new graphics and other such things, as long as they don't use the same kinda combat system that they had in FF13 or whatever that shit is lame, I prefer turn based to that.
isn't that the one that you only really control one of your people, and it's mostly bollocks? or was that another square game I'm mis-remembering...SmarterThanYou said:Not pointing this out to be a jerk (I hate the fact that this even needs explaining, and it is admittedly rather off topic), but FF13's system IS turn based. I never got BOF3 to me it was worse than BOF2 but god BOF4 was frakkin awesome.Nerexor said:I would be happy to just get BoF3 on the PSN. So annoyed that they only have BoF4 available when BoF3 was bloody amazing. I tried to play #2 once but the encounter rate was so ridiculous that I couldn't take it. You could go maybe 3 steps in a dungeon before getting in yet another fight, so frustrating.
Maybe I'll just dig out my PS1 and my copy of 3 tonight...
Yeah, I had to import it. Pretty good, but nowhere near 2.RaikuFA said:Never played 3. Really pissed Capcom won't release it. They're also refusing to do a PSN release and won't say why.
That game seems to have gotten a lot of mixed opinion surrounding it. Don't know if it was as successful as Capcom would have liked.piinyouri said:Capcoms got enough good will earned from Dragons Dogma as far as I'm concerned.
They could give it a shot. I wouldn't even be upset if it's a terrible game.
Well true, I think it was mixed reception in the States, but it's blowing UP in Japan from what I hear.Clearing the Eye said:That game seems to have gotten a lot of mixed opinion surrounding it.
