Wouldn't it suck to be the pilot?

It's simply an overused plot device. Unless the plane crashes headfirst, the pilot has the same chances of surviving than everyone else.

Which reminds me...
In Call of Duty 4, there's a part in the campaign where the player must rescue an injured pilot from a plane.
I think you mean helicopter. :p

If we had just left her, we would've survived that nuke!

Oh yeah, that's the one. Call me a noob, but a few days ago was the first time I played the campaign.

The pilot always dies because that way, you can't call them up to get out of whatever hellhole you've been dropped into. Also, this way, your still alone in said hellhole, and you don't have to deal with another inconvenient survivor.

L4D didn't kill the second pilot, at least (not sure what happens to the first pilot in Crash Course, though...haven't played it)
I believe that Zoey freaked out and shot the guy, because he said he was infected or something.

Well, a while back I was playing a console FPS (Killzone 2 if I remember correctly) and on first mission (which is basically the studio trying to recreate D-day in space), the pilot of the landing craft you crash onto the beach with is mentioned as being killed on impact.

I realized, the pilot in these kinds of games always seem to die. You never hear: oh, the pilot is fine, he is seeing what he can do about the engine, or awake to a pilot informing you of the death of your condescending accented commanding officer.

Tell me fellow Escapists, do you think I make a good point, or am I just crazy?
Nope, your just psychotic, and your a burden on your family because they have to pay for the medication...

OT: Yes they always die.

Dead Rising used this to great effect. I truly believed that I was going to be rescued after 3 days. Seeing my one good shot at leaving the town get eaten by a zombie was spirit-breaking.

You crazy, man...

OT: I've noticed this as well. CoD4 when the heli gets shot down with a missle, pilot dies. Later same game, cobra pilot crashes, rescued by you, then proceeds to die in nuke explosion. And Halo 3...well, show me a pilot who crashed and didn't die.
Foehammer survived through most of Halo: Combat Evolved, then died in the end, saving you.
She was actually my first thought when I saw this thread. That's the only example I can think of where the pilot was actually a real character, albeit one you never personally see. Her death actually got to me.

It's a fair point, the pilot is generally the only one who knows how to fly your magic aircraft out of danger. Magic aircraft survived your nasty attack fairly well? Pilot's dead so you still gotta walk.

Just another bit of poor writing cliche.

Damn ninja zombies hopping on helicopters and stalling for the sake of dramatic tension!

It's not really just pilots, I think it would suck to be any expendable NPC who's sole existence and death is to act as a plot device which highlights how dangerous the environment is, and to make the player stranded in that environment with no option of getting back in the vehicle and going straight back home.

I've been playing a lot of Heroes Over Europe (a WW2 flight game) and it's great being a pilot, it sucks to be anything else.

In that game it sucks to be Infantry on the ground, Tank Drivers, Sailors and boat crew, Bomber Crew, Ground Observers, Fire Engine drivers, POW's, French Resistance dudes driving trucks, civilians taking refuge from the Blitz at Waterloo Station or people who live in Dover, who always seem to be getting attacked and killed with no way of fighting back or getting themselves out of their predicament, all they can do is scream on the radio and wait for you to swoop in and rescue them, by destroying whatever is attacking them.

KotOR Games:

Worst Piolets ever... they crash on every planet in the galaxy, forcing you to get a new ship or repair the damage one... JUST SO THEY CAN CRASH INTO ANOTHER PLANET.

Those are the only games in which i had truly wished the Pilot had died.

Wait, what?

What's Crash Course(new left 4 dead maps). And I don't remember any pilots dying in L4D

Uh... what are you talking about? I don't recall EVER crashing in KotOR 1. I will concede to KotOR 2, however. Starting the game in a damaged Ebon Hawk, the misadventures at Telos, being shot down at Onderon, crash-landing at Malachor V...

True, and it always happens about 4 seconds after the hero gets off the ship/plane/vehicle
Pretty much.

Two things that are sure to get you killed in a game if you're not the main character:

Driving any vehicle that transports said protagonist
Wearing a helmet
The one guy wearing a helmet in GOW gets shot in the head, and dies. Hooray, for expendability.

I want to see someone make a game where you're the pilot on one of these suicide missions, and your sole job is to crash the vehicle into the most dangerous area you can find.

You're right. The pilot always seems to die.

For example, in Gears 2 when the Riftworm eats the Helicopter everyone survives except for the pilot (or maybe Marcus just abandons him in the wreckage because he has no name).

Now that I think of I did play a lot of games where the pilot dies, though in rare cases where a main character or any character that's important to the plot is the pilot he/she doesn't die.

I felt the same way honestly and it was a mix between:
"Oh no she died, I actually liked her!"
And:
"Oh shit there goes my ride... I DON'T RESPOND WELL TO TIME LIMITS!!"

...Seriously I don't go well with time limits, I get really anxious.
