Wouldn't it suck to be the pilot?

Now that you mention it..yeah!.

I guess pilots in games are expendable presuming they play a transport role. I doubt someone that has the role of bombarding the crap out of the enemy will be shot down so easily or at least the script will give him/her a heroic death.

True, and it always happens about 4 seconds after the hero gets off the ship/plane/vehicle
Pretty much.

Two things that are sure to get you killed in a game if you're not the main character:

Driving any vehicle that transports said protagonist
Wearing a helmet
Hello d1sturbed!

Ahem.

Yes.

Everywhere. It's intensely odd, if you know what I mean.

Well the Pilot is more expendable.
I mean if your already at your destination then he would just have to sit in the craft while you fight.
lol He's a red shirt...

Now that I think about it your right, i remember in the first Halo, like the first mission(not when you wake up) The pilot crashes and everybody onboard, EXCEPT you dies... Apparently it is too early in the game for Halo's brand of sucky friendly AI to kick in.

Also in this game I played on Kongregate, I'm thinking it was called Star(-something), your pilot crashes on this planet deep in somewhere-land, and you hgave to travel across the planet to find a way to get him un-stuck, cause he is sitting there with a pipe in him, and not dead surprisingly... Then once you get him out, the healing foam or whatever has to have time to kick in, then you have to travel farther out to turn off the ship-sucking forcefeild the planet has, and you see this massive amount of Easter Island/ Lovecraft heads surronding this temple and you go inside and it's all alien...

In Deus Ex there's a choice.
It wasn't so much a choice as it was a slightly hidden option. It was fairly easy to miss and I'm willing to bet most players missed it on their initial playthroughs. However, it's a nice reward for a thorough player.

KotOR Games:

Worst Piolets ever... they crash on every planet in the galaxy, forcing you to get a new ship or repair the damage one... JUST SO THEY CAN CRASH INTO ANOTHER PLANET.

Those are the only games in which i had truly wished the Pilot had died.
In all fairness, you did get shot at a LOT. Seriously, it's not really bad piloting if you get shot down. If anything, the pilots in the KOTOR games should be commended for managing to land a damaged ship without killing the crew...

EDIT:

It's Morningstar [http://www.kongregate.com/games/RedHerringLabs/morningstar], and yes, it's a pretty nice adventure game.

those things in killzone are automated to make sure that no pilots are injured during the making of the game.
either that or they killed them all...
i think helicopter pilots get it worst though, there doesn't seem to be a game where atleast one doesn't go down.
althought i think the one in conflict desert storm lives and the co-pilot dies to death.
if only pilots knew how to fly properly, the "just crashed" mission in FPSs wouldn't be required anymore...

There was a king raven crash somehere in the middle of gears1 where people survived, cant remember if the pilot made it though.

The only crash I can remember when the pilot survived for sure was in AvP2. Survived the whole game afaik but she was only borderline red-shirt because she had lines and a name.

Dead Rising used this to great effect. I truly believed that I was going to be rescued after 3 days. Seeing my one good shot at leaving the town get eaten by a zombie was spirit-breaking.
that's only if you get the "A" ending
But that's the only ending that really counts. (i.e. the only way to see the true ending)

You crazy, man...

OT: I've noticed this as well. CoD4 when the heli gets shot down with a missle, pilot dies. Later same game, cobra pilot crashes, rescued by you, then proceeds to die in nuke explosion. And Halo 3...well, show me a pilot who crashed and didn't die.
Didn't the Chief fly the Pelican straight into the Ark, crash, and then emerge unharmed? I mean, yeah, he's the protagonist, but technically he was piloting the vehicle :p

I remember that! I hate how in every game (of some sort) that there's a series of no-nothing people who die and our characters aren't phased by it.

1st chopper is shot down, then that Mike guy is killed after saving Leon and Leon shouts out his name "Miiiiike!" before forgetting the whole thing and going to kill more spaniards.

Never played RE5. But it's still annoying.

Especially true in WW2 games. For example, CoD5 has that part where the driver in your little boat gets killed as soon as you hit land.
I was gonna say that! honestly, everyone in your boat lives except for one idiot who was sticking his head out the window and... the pilot. Then, later, you come across the downed wreckage of a fighter jet, and the pilot's dead again! Pilots are just the red shirts of the WWII genre of games. If you're the pilot, you know you're going to eat it by the end.

It's simply an overused plot device. Unless the plane crashes headfirst, the pilot has the same chances of surviving than everyone else.

Which reminds me...
In Call of Duty 4, there's a part in the campaign where the player must rescue an injured pilot from a plane (edit) helicopter.
Didn't the pilot die anyway?
Yes, but it wasn't from the crash itself, which makes the death irrelevant to this discussion.

Aww, sadface.

You just have the exact same avatar, which I thought was one of those custom-photoshopped ones.

But if you're'n't , sadface.

I noticed the same thing in star wars... remember the clone pilot that brought them to dooku in episode 2? or the pilot bringing those arc troopers in the clone wars (2003)

The first resident evil actually had the pilot survive by heroically running away and leaving you stranded, of course he gets squished by Nemesis in Resident evil 3 so he couldn't escape his fate forever.
