I love AO, but nobody else seems to enjoy it out of my group of friends. I tend to play AO on my free time, and when I have friends over we play rift.

Fallen Earth

Indie post-apoc MMO. FPS style combat, so skill actually matters in PVP it's not just about the numbers; a very in-depth crafting system and the most amazingly expansive and immersive world I have ever encountered in an MMO.

Plus, there's a free 30 day trial.

If you like Fallout, STALKER or Metro 2033 you really ought to try Fallen Earth.

I've been spending my money on steam games. Looks like Darkspore might be a game that can hold me over until the release of the old republic. It's not an MMO persay but it has online pvp and coop. It's decent fun.

Ill have to agree with you about the direction the devs are taking. instead of working on a "looking for guild" tool they should have been working on a "looking for raid" tool.
It would probably be easier to explain Darkspore as Diablo McDOTA with the Spore Creature Creator stuck in there.

If your a patient person that wants fun in the long run, then play EVE Online. It's not for everyone and might seem like a chore but if you can get past that it really is a fun and immersive game.

You guys are probably going to be disappointed when you find out it's more or less the same thing with one or two added features.

If you're looking for the exact same thing with the illusion of freshness, I'd go for RIFT.

If you're looking for something different but not EVE (not slamming the game EVE fans, it just might not be to this guy's tastes as it is SO different from most MMOS) then I'd hold out for Guild Wars 2. It's promising to shake up the "holy trinity" of tank/dps/healer, tackle the issue of a static world and generally take things in a new direction. Time will tell if it delivers, but even if not, NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES BRAH.

Except for new lands, races, mobs, spells, classes, talent systems, etc...

I figure that should be enough to keep me amused for a month or two until another good release comes out

New races why yes. Rift has normal elves, dark elves, and then yellow, brown and blue humans. Really pushing the envelope there.

Then of course there's a rogue class that uses combo points and finishing moves and even has an ability that teleports you right behind your target.

I usually don't mind the rift fanboys. Taste is after all completely subjective but when they honest to god try to claim that rift was developed independently without any influence from WoW are completely delusional.

Every single MMO in the past 6 years started out by looking at WoW then going "How can we do what they do?" Rift just went with the less subtle option by ripping off entire parts and pasting them straight in.

Rift rips in Wow harder than torchlight ripped on diablo 2.

Rift is probably the best if you just want another WoW, done better. It does many things well, but has no originality at all.

I'd definitely try it if I was bored of WoW and wanted something else similar.

Can't really suggest any alternatives, except maybe The Old Republic, if you can get past how old the graphics look already.

I tried Rift and I personally wouldn't recommend it, one reason it's just another version of WoW. Why not just try find another guild if you want to raid on WoW?
Or wait for The Old Republic which people seem to be looking forward to.

EVE online. I started and its better than good. Its really complex though and a timesinker so be prepared.

If you fancy yourself complex then you should give EvE a whirl. It is becoming not just the most impressive MMO but one of the most impressive games in general.

No. No, no, no. Unless you've got friends who are already there and are going to help you get started, starting Eve as a new player is a recipe for boosting your bloody pressure.

I've never seen a worse, more unpleasant community even in FPS's and F2P MMO's.

And even if you find yourself a great group to play with, you're still going to be stuck as a tool, working so that OTHER people can have fun, because the skill system means you're going to be essentially worthless for 6+ months and totally dependant on other people to achieve anything other than grinding the same lameass PvE missions over and over and over.

Don't waste the time or the money.

well warhammer online was really good, its pvp is fantastic but Im not sure how its player numbers are and its pretty based on those for the pvp
I quite enjoyed WHO, but the PvP was terribly unbalanced. Sure, the instanced battlegrounds were adequate, but that's not really Warhammer PvP. It's not really any different from a WoW Arena, except on a 10v10 scale or whatever. The REAL PvP is in the open non-instanced areas, but it was so poorly designed and implemented that all you did was spam AoE and/or spend 3-5 minutes running back from the closest spawn point.

And don't even get me started on how much the game-design and loot systems kick tanks and healers in the balls... there's a reason almost everyone plays a DPS class in that game.

I would say you should check out Anarchy Online. I am pretty sure that its still alive and kicking since I have been getting emails about it.

Do you know if they've fixed up the starting areas yet? I found it to be massively unfriendly to new players (in terms of gameplay, not people), but that was a good couple of years ago.

Personally, I'm currently playing Guild Wars, and I'm waiting to see how Guild Wars 2, The Old Republic and Dark Millenium turn out.

IDRK I haven't played it in like 3-4 years. If they changed the starting area again that would probably be a pain in the ass. I never felt that the starting area when I played as unfriendly. I could always just leave the starting area at anytime and go to the original starting area anyway. I am downloading it now on my laptop and going to start up a new ftp account so i can start playing again.

How is it for story content? Looks like a good engine but would get a bit meh without a good driving force behind it

I'm not currently playing MMO's but I am looking forward to 3, in no particular order:
-Guild Wars 2
-Firefall
-TERA online

I won't bother rattling off descriptions since none of them are actually out yet and a quick google search will tell you all you need to know.

Runescape.

Hahahahano. I was kidding, though that game stole many hours of my life and many 5$ installemnts each month from my parents.

I've never really played any other MMO's, so I can't really say much about it, unfortunately.
There should be a Runescape addiction support group.
"Hello, my name is Joe, and im a Lvl 90 range pure"
"Hi Joe"

BUt in all seriousness, that was my vice for a good 4 years. IT wasn`t until they updated the game to hell and back that I just lost interest.
I played for years as well and probably only got to about a level 64. It's kind of hard to justify all that playing time and still be such a low level.

By the time they had taken out the wilderness I had already stopped playing, but I somewhat followed the updates and they were just so stupid I couldn't help but facepalm, though I think they brought back the wilderness recently cause so many people were pissed off about it.
