If this has been done before than I apologize in advance, I haven't seen it and I am curious.

I proudly refer to myself as a nerd, I like RPG's, star wars, reading, you know, nerdy stuff. But there are limits to my nerdom. I'm not here to really judge anyone for their interests, we all have our hobbies and I'm sure if you heard all of mine you would probably laugh at me. What I want to know is there something you've seen, heard of, or known a friend who is into something that brings out the Nelson Muntz *cookies for obvious reference* in you?

Personally the big three are Magic the Gathering, LARPing (if I actually tried it I would probably love it though) and fushibi, which is basically a glass ball you can do stupid tricks with (David Bowe does it in Labrinth and really only he in a cod piece can pull it off). I saw a commercial for them during Avatar and really wanted to give wedgies to all the people doing it.

Magic is fine, I'd love to get into it, but my friends wouldn't bother with it. LARPing is a big no no for me, mostly because I would just laugh at it all and whatever fushibi is...it sounds like fun.

If you'd have fun doing any of that stuff...you shouldn't hold back. Just because people like me will laugh at your antics of LARPing, doesn't mean you shouldn't. ;)

I'd agree with you on Magic the Gathering and LARPing. I used to paint warhammer as a kid, but now it's a definate no-no. I also had to try playing a DnD style game for a narratology lecture, and I found that's just a bit too nerdy for me too. Role-Playing servers on MMOs where you're expected to talk in character is another thing.

If I enjoyed that stuff, I would still probably do it. But you, alone, inside, with a locked door, and no surveillance equipment nearby. There are just certain things that can't be done I guess.

People dressing up as Twilight characters and role playing their way into the cinema. The amount of women fawning over the sole dude attending as Edward Cullen was pathetic.

TL;DR Twihards

Also regarding the fushibi thing I use diabolos and get funny looks for them, doesn't stop them being awesome.

Those fushigi balls actually look pretty fun, in a street performance kind of way. I'm not sure why you would consider that "nerdy", except because the name sounds Japanese.

Cosplay, LARPing and tabletop gaming are just a little too much for me.

There is nothing too nerdy for me to try, though I'm largely uninterested in a lot of "nerdy" things. I've never LARP'd, but I already enjoy beating my friends with foam weapons. I can't imagine doing it with rules would be too far a reach to imagine me trying at some point.

Well, I recently tried to play warhammer, after putting off painting for months (i found out I fucking hate it). Played with one of those *really* over-enthusiastic guys at games workshop.

It was really really fucking boring and awkward.

So I guess i found out I'm not that nerdy, though I also found out I'm damn lazy as I still haven't thrown out the crap i bought from GW.

Maybe trying to fool myself that it wasn't a massive waste of money...

(I'm not saying the hobby is crap for those that enjoy it, if you enjoy it then go right ahead and good for you. I however didn't and so all this stuff thats sitting on a table right next to my computer is just plastic/metallic waste of space).

I cant throw it all out as that would be admitting the waste of money, so i'll just have to find a place to put all of it out of sight :p.

I actually enjoy warhammer, but I agree about the people they hire to work in the stores. What warhammer army I will probably take it off your hands as I know people who want in on the game.

For me it would be LARPing, dating sims, DnD other than a random game every 5 years of my life, Cosplay, and MMO's. It's not that I see it as too nerdy but rather that I have no to little interest. Saying it is too nerdy is simply giving into stereo types and social norms as well as a crappy excuse.

Considering I'm living in the UK and by your profile you're in the U.S, I don't think its worth the trouble :p.

Thanks for the offer though.

That service where you pay a girl to play games with you.

That's actually more pathetic then anything, but still.

After you mentioned this, I looked it up, and I completely agree; it just kind of looks like a pathetic attempt at juggling. Sure, it's neat for the first few seconds, because the ball itself has very fluid movement, but then you start to notice that they're just doing the same thing over and over again, and apparently all of these "techniques" can be performed without moving anything more than your hands and your cheekbones (as judging from the video I saw, a big goofy grin is a must if you're using it).

Anyways, I don't know why I'm getting so worked up over something I didn't even know about before, but it just seemed so lame and monotonous to me! So, that.

I would never do LARPing. I have some odd urge to try D&D, but almost nobody does that around here, and the people who I have a gut feeling would play D&D are the kind of people that act weird enough for me to avoid. I would also never become obsessed with a book. I know some nerdy girls (It's not an insult, they define themselves as nerds) at my school who are obsessed with Harry Potter. They are waaaaaayy too obsessed with a book series that isn't THAT great. I also avoid anime. I've seen the anime and manga club at our school. They are definitely scary to watch.

Nnnnnope, nothing comes to mind. On the other hand, I'm that guy who, upon leaving my mate's house late one weekend night, tripped down the stairs in a drunken stupor and said these exact words before passing out on the ground: "Fuck, I must've rolled a 1 or something for my Reflex save."

...I kid, really. I used to play Magic, but gave it up years ago when I realized that if I wanted an expensive geeky timesink I might as well just play more video games, LARPing...well, I've always felt that if I REALLY wanted to wave a piece of foam around that badly I'd just haul out my old container of Tubers n' Zots and pick a fight with my roommates, and anything else obviously nerdy...ehhh. I'm very much a closet geek.

Yeah, that's my answer too. That and the whole 'Japanese love pillow' thing (you know, with prints of anime or video game characters). I guess what I'm saying is pretty much any point where the nerds desperation for female contact has gone to the extreme or any point where a nerd's childish crush for a fictional character has gone waaaay too far.

I always try and make sure, when entering the realm of Nerdonia that I always stay away from the small province of Patheticstan.

Cosplay. I love anime and I can definitely see myself walking around one of those conventions at some point in the future but never in a costume. First of all its horribly embarrassing if you ask me and second of all if you're going to do it you had better fucking do it RIGHT. You will never be permitted to live down a bad cosplay.
