Yep, I love both styles intensely, though certain games from both camps are obviously better than others.

Gee, A couple years ago I logged many hours on both FF VII and FF VIII, and a few hours ago I fired up Planescape Torment and tried to navigate the big confusing hive, all the while reading a Baldur's Gate fanfic and getting all the references. The answer should be pretty clear.

...it's "I play both and truly enjoy them despite their respective flaws"

I play mostly JRPGs, havent played too many WRPGs but the ones I have played/seen seem to be like an MMORPG without the mutliplayer. I didnlt like oblivion, it seemed like 1 player runescape.

I do play and enjoy both. They are different, but they're not really opposites and they're not different enough for me to love one and hate the other.

I do notice that wRPGs tend to be more about freedom and character development, while jRPGs are more linear and story-driven, and I can't really say I prefer one over the other, it just depends on my mood (and if the game in question is made well)

I play both, although strangely enough, I prefer japanese RPGs (I'm English, don't you know) and my chinese friend prefers western RPGs.

I'm highest level in Valkyria Chronicles and haven't finished Fallout 3, and he is the opposite.

So take that society!

I play both, but prefer WRPGs. Still, Shining Force is one of my favorite games of all time, and is a JRPG (although a quite old one)

This, though I'll admit I played more of the J kind.

Also, I'm amazed at how this thread didn't devolve into a "lol JRPG's suck" fest. Normally I'd congratulate you all, but in this case I feel a stronger need to check for quantum anomalies.

xD same here. I started out with JRPGs, heck, FF9 was the first game I played for PS1 and seriously got me into gaming. I got into WRPGs with TES. a lil bit of morrowind and then a whole lot of oblivion. Also fallout, and ANYTHING ever made by Bioware.

I swear to Cthulhu we have this thread every day. Every day.

I have a problem with WRPJs being that all the recent ones are 'blank slate' story with morality systems. It's a lot of work for unsatisfying endings and a story that is, at best, mediocre. They want you to play a character, and you're given an illusion of choice (either SUPAHBADGAI or Hero Jesus). I prefer the reality of not having a say to the illusion that my decisions mean something.

That being said, I have Oblivion and both DLC packs, as well has Final Fantasy X. I have finished neither.

Play and love both, here. I'm equally likely to pick up another round of Wizardry 8 or Baten Kaitos. If I seem more of a JRPG person, it's only because I wind up defending them more often.

Recently I've decided to get into the emulator scene though and play through all these JRPGs which japanophiles keep glorifying nonstop. Final Fantasy 7 is not the best game ever, does not have the best story ever, is not deep, etc. Kill yourselves.
Only if we take you with us. Only fair, after all.

In summary, I like WRPGs because I can play how I want, aka character building. From what little I know, JRPGs consist of turn based combat, grinding, and that's about it. Use the strongest attack, heal, rinse repeat, win game.
Well, you're right on that, at least. You do know extremely little.

I'm getting a little miffed at this constant "You're just ignorant!" slant from fans of JRPGS.

No, you do not need some obsessive's understanding of a genre to legitimately say you don't like it. There may well be the odd exception to your dislike, there is after all some rap I fairly enjoy, but when you say you like or dislike any kind of genre it is by necessity a generalization.

I dislike much of the Japanese games I've played . I'm come to the conclusion that the people who make games in Japan aren't making my kind of game. This is a fine thing. Just don't hold that I'm "missing out" and I'm "just ignorant" and if I wasn't such a stupid clot I'd weclome them with open arms.

Did you even read the part I was specifically responding to?

I play both, mostly JRPGs though. Although by both I really mean Fallout 3 and JRPGs. I gave Baldur's Gate and Oblivion a chance, but after a few hours I wanted to shoot myself. I have a copy of Mass Effect a mate got me a while ago, and it will probably be waiting for quite a while longer to be played. Far too much fun to be had with modding Fallout 3.

Edit
I forgot Might & Magic 6, 7 and 8. I used to play them a lot, right up until a couple years ago when I got a new computer. Having more than 768mb of ram and an actual video card seems to have killed any ability it had to run at all.

Well then actually perform some proper research before you join the debate.
Different guy. The other guy needs to do research. This one either just jumped the gun on the reading comprehension or honestly interpreted "wow, you're bashing a genre you clearly know nothing about" as "you're stupid for disliking this genre." I'm seriously hoping it's the first one.

Generally speaking, I prefer WRPGs. I certainly don't hate JRPGs, and have played some very good ones. For instance, Dark Cloud 1 and 2 were 2 of the best games I've ever played, and I'm planning on getting White Knight Chronicles. Demon's Souls is awesome as well.
