There will always be WWII games, there are no other wars where there are black and white, good and evil sides. And without clearly established bad guys and good guys, us, the general populace wil not get it.

The only time that WWII games will end is when there's a clear, new, fresh war in people's memories. The Nazis are the most vile, evil people we know to date - Unless we see another power rise up as cruel and demonic as them, WWII games will continue to circulate.

When that happens, though, don't be surprised if we see WWIII games coming out.

For those wanting a Vietnam game, has nobody played Battlefield: Vietnam?

Also, there IS a WW2 j-RPG, although it's rather fantasized... It's name escapes me, but it's a strategy RPG on the Xbox 360... Came out to poor reviews...

Hate to say it, But the world war 2 genre needs to start heading down the Saboteur direction. The game had promise. Or better yet, the inglorious bastard direction. Stop forcusing on the battles and go more into the sideline stuff.

I don't see why everyone has such a dislike for WW2. It was the last great war. Every weapon has it's own personality, there is a large variety, and the current technology limited the bulk of warfare to the infantry level. Modern warfare is just firing a cruise missle from thousands of kilometres away.

But whatever. Hating WW2 is the hip thing to do nowadays it seems.

I'd rather it be a WWII game than yet another war on middle-easterners. WWII had better guns. Seriously, a group of modern warriors with M4's would get slaughtered in 1940's Japan. Why? The weedy little 5.56 mm the M4 uses would do nothing but anger the Japs while a shot from the M1 Garand has enough power to at least knock the guy down. Sure the M4 is full-auto and lighter, but modern soldiers prefer the spray and pray method while heavily relying on electronics to do everything for them. The Nazi riflemen with their bolt-action Mausers would be a match for modern US army soldiers without their electronics.

People will probably keep developing games based on WWII until it stops being the only war the Americans were unquestionably and popularly considered to be on the "good" side (and when sides were even recognisable, and there was a clear, uniform-defined line between civilians and the enemy). Which will probably be a long while.
Then why no Korean War games? The US was fighting North Korea AND China, both considered to be worse than the US, and created a thriving state in South Korea. Plus the battle of Chosin river valley would make an astounding final level. One division of marines against almost a million Chinese infantry, in artic conditions. I realize alot of Americans are giving you shit for your statement, but it does hold true for Vietnam. Its why the US doesn't have a draft anymore- conscripts would rather commit a war crime and go to jail than bleed out in a jungle somewhere.

OT- Until the Russians and possibly the Australians start making WWII games. I would love to see a game collected from the TONS of battles on the Eastern Front. I really only buy WWII games for the Russian levels. But the dream war game of that era would be a game about the Spanish Civil war. Imagine fighting alongside Orwell or Hemingway(even though the facists won). The Russian Civil war would be cool too.

As much as I hate to say it. WW2 games will continue to be made as long as they keep making money. Basic economics would tell you that were that not the case the genre would have died out by now. I've stopped buying them in a effort to tell developers that, "I love the M1 Garand in all, and killing Nazi's is fun, but move on."

No, it's the only modern war that had a real evil enemy..

Seems the only thing they'll ever make for a WWII game is the same retarded "Ally soldier fighting Nazis" formula that they've done since the first Medal of Honor game.

I can think of a few ideas that are actually fucking original, but they wouldn't work out.
Most of them because people would hate your company for making a game where you play as the people who've been the villains for forever and a day.
The rest (concentration camp prisoners fighting for their freedom) because they'll either greatly upset the Jewish community or because the assholes who say the Holocaust never happened would get pissed off over you actually acknowledging one of the most horrific genocidal events in human history. Or both.

Yet Inglorious Bastards was fake....maybe its just me but I hate it when people twist history like that (I really loved the movie though). There are so many things left out of a WW2 game that there could be. Like Easy company campaign would be nice really.

until that game is erased from the history books, new games will continue to shat out by brain dead developers who have long since given up about creating something ORIGINAL and NEW.

Yes.

Because Americans refuse to make games that focus on something other than Americans, Russians, and shit like the Pacific, Stalingrad, Berlin, Omaha Beach (AKA: The Second Reason America Almost Fucked Over Operation Overlord), and the Rhine Crossings, and Americans are starting to tire of the same shit all the time.

Oh, wait, no. Americans never get tired of making their warcocks feel bigger. So no, American developers will make more and more World War II games focusing on the same shit, or on generic fake shit.

WHERE IS MY CANADIAN WORLD WAR II GAME WHERE I BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF JERRY'S IN DENMARK!?
TERRORIST! You sir, do not love America.

Do you think games based on WWII will no longer be released?
No. As a matter of fact, game developers of all genres are still developing WWII games to this very day.
Yes indeed, rumors abound that Konami is stepping in to fill the void left by cod with their highly anticipated Dance Dance Genocide. Not to be outdone, Harmonix is allegedly producing Rock Band: Blitzkrieg, where you promote the master race through a combination of rattling away at the strings of a guitar and rattling the trigger of a machine gun in the worlds first rhythm 'em up.
