Bumped into this, and was really surprised.

Pre-orders of the Xbox One console in the last week have broken all previous pre-order records in Blockbuster's 24-year history, according to a report out of the U.K. today...

Xbox One pre-orders in the first 24 hours after Microsoft's reveal event were already besting those of Sony's PS4 console, according to the one retailer who spoke to MCVUK.
What makes this interesting is that PS4 was announced all the way back in February...

Two things really surprised me about this in particular.
1. Blockbuster is still around, and is accepting Pre-orders of Xbones.
2. Blockbuster is still around, and is accepting Pre-orders of Xbones.

What do you guys think about this? Setting the tone for the coming generation, or an anomaly created by people who haven't read a thing about the Xbone?

I really love how we all secretly decided to call that thing the Xbone.

The majority of people are not well informed. So of course they ordered it. It's all about the marketing now. After E3 it will be about the games and marketing.

I think that if everybody knew about the Xbone issues there would be a lot less interest in it.

My parents were talking about it and wondering if I wanted to get it all since it go incredible reviews in the paper and it got 5 stars.

Apparently it's already getting reviewed and given 5 stars just from the announcement, seems that it's marketing which is going to sell the Xbone rather than it being any good.

They would have to be paid reviews. Surely.
Or reviews written by people that really love TV, football and CoD.

People that still go to Blockbuster (mostly, I still rent from there so - yeah!) are 30something fossils anyways that have no clue about DRMs or always online stuff. A bunch of Dudebros that won't touch an RPG even if it's got arrows going into knees: too complex for them.

Most probably still retort, "bah, PS3 has no games," like it's 2007. All they know is there's another Xbox coming out with another Halo with another Gears, and then there's CoD, which some might not even know also comes out on the PS3.

If this 24hr authentication check thing is legit then why in hell would I even consider buying this? It's just a long-term rental.

Yes, yes they are. And ironically the Xbox One is seemingly designed to help put them out to pasture, so why they are even attempting to sell the product is beyond me. It's like watching the business form of lemmings, I tell you.

Edit: Actually this probably isn't too surprising. Businesses these days are not able to see the long term and are all interested in quick profit.

I honestly had no idea that people preordered from Blockbuster especially consoles ah well no figures are given so maybe there previous record was 10 or something.

These wont nessecarily translate into sales though I mean there is no price and no games so far and very little info on it, personally I hope it bombs unless they change their current strategy.

Wait, why do you have to be uninformed or a casual gamer to think the XO looks interesting? I'll certainly say that it intrigues me. The only reason I won't buy it is because I love my pre-owned games, and I've been with Sony the whole time so I'll stick with them despite the PS4 looking (in my opinion) nearly as irrelevant to gaming as the XO.
Let's put it this way- XO contributes nothing to actual gaming... But then again, neither does the PS4.
I'm not defending the XO, I'm just upset at the automatic flaming and ad hominem to everyone who doesn't hate the XO or Blockbuster.

I am also surprised Blockbuster is still around. Every one I've ever seen is long gone. They way they harassed people to buy crap all the time played a role in that I'm sure.

Microsoft want's to replace Nielsen, that's what the XBone is about.

That's why your TV now conveniently pass through the console, Kinnect must be always on, and you have to connect each 24 hours. It has to know what you're watching, how many people is watching, and it has to upload that information on a dayly basis. It's a spy device disguised as a VHS.

I agree that we are too quick to label everyone who likes this console as some sort of braindead college aged schmuck, and I would say that the two consoles do contribute to gaming: they increase the standard specs that developers will be designing their games for, allowing for better graphics and animations, more content, better AI and more background calculations happening so more things can be shown on screen.

The big issue is that the Xbox One has a whole lot wrong with it that the PS4 won't have:
24 Hour online check in or games brick up, with active encouragement for devs to enforce always online DRM in their games.

Always on camera that Microsoft talked about how it could be used to spy on people in their homes to collect advertising information or to enforce limits on the amount of people able to watch a piece of media.

Having to pay an extra fee for used games (maybe as much as the original game cost)

The questionable mention of using the cloud for computing purposes, bad for several reasons;
A. It could be impossible
B. If possible would create lag and necessitate always on connection for any game that uses it
C. And would put artificial lifespan on that game of until servers were shut down
D. Streaming would max out many people's internet download limits, and possibly just having the console on could max out your limits as Microsoft hijack your machine and stream other people's games to it to compute for them (that's where the cloud's processing power actually comes from: Everyone else's idle Xbox)
E. This will probably require an Xbox Live subscription to access, meaning you are now paying a subscription service to run your Xbox.

Extremely heavy Operating System and loads of background programs bricking up the system while you're playing games, so the impressive 8 gigs of RAM they say you are getting is actually only 5 because 3 FULL GIGS are reserved for operating procedures.

And of course many of the TV features in the Xbox One are not available internationally, meaning we will get inferior products for the same price, but the software is still active on our international machines, so we are still feeling the sting of almost half the machines' RAM going to background programmes we cannot use!

PS4 is free of virtually all of these, or at the least just not as bad. The Xbox One is a terrible gaming platform, a terrible product for consumers. It has been built with the intention to allow Mircosoft to control and dictate to their customer, and may even leaves the option open to sell their personal information to marketers of what they are doing in the privacy of their own homes.

We have a Blockbuster here. It's only because there aren't really any video stores in the surrounding area.
Keep in mind that Microsoft has kept very quite about the whole DRM thing outside of the gaming community. For those who don't frequent these sites, the public media outlets like CNN have given the Xbone glorious reviews, and thus those people are going to be the ones to buy into that.

While I agree with some points you made, a lot of things are being touted as fact around the internet when they have not been confirmed.

Microsoft has not yet stated that there will not be a way to turn the kinect sensor off in a menu or something. They have stated that it will need to be connected, however.

Everyone also assumes that they will be recording your every move, which the thought of it is not unwarranted in today's age but it is no different than any webcam/smartphone camera or eavesdropping on your cell phone or game chat for that matter.

Do you have a source that said they implicitly stated that? If so I would be curious to see it. I know they had filed a patent that allowed them to see how many people are watching something source-(http://www.gamespot.com/news/microsoft-patents-tech-that-watches-viewers-6399616) but large companies patent things all the time they never use.

You also state that cloud computing would be impossible which I am curious about (you seem to be educated on this subject, and I don't work with computers so maybe you can clarify for me). If it was so process intensive, wouldn't having to stream all that data of video recording from the kinect just make it even more difficult? From everyone's xbox one, all at once?
I am looking forward to this console but I am still waiting until all the details are released to make my decisions but The more educated the better!

I just call it the X1. I think Xbone is just silly.

I'm more surprised that people are surprised that Blockbuster is still around. My grandparents have one near their house, I didn't think they were going out of business anything soon.
