I'm not defending the XO, I'm just upset at the automatic flaming and ad hominem to everyone who doesn't hate the XO or Blockbuster.
I agree that we are too quick to label everyone who likes this console as some sort of braindead college aged schmuck, and I would say that the two consoles
do contribute to gaming: they increase the standard specs that developers will be designing their games for, allowing for better graphics and animations, more content, better AI and more background calculations happening so more things can be shown on screen.
The big issue is that the Xbox One has a whole lot wrong with it that the PS4 won't have:
24 Hour online check in or games brick up, with active encouragement for devs to enforce always online DRM in their games.
Always on camera that Microsoft talked about how it could be used to spy on people in their homes to collect advertising information or to enforce limits on the amount of people able to watch a piece of media.
Having to pay an extra fee for used games (maybe as much as the original game cost)
The questionable mention of using the cloud for computing purposes, bad for several reasons;
A. It could be impossible
B. If possible would create lag and necessitate always on connection for any game that uses it
C. And would put artificial lifespan on that game of until servers were shut down
D. Streaming would max out many people's internet download limits, and possibly just having the console on could max out your limits as Microsoft hijack your machine and stream other people's games to it to compute for them (that's where the cloud's processing power actually comes from: Everyone else's idle Xbox)
E. This will probably require an Xbox Live subscription to access, meaning you are now paying a subscription service to run your Xbox.
Extremely heavy Operating System and loads of background programs bricking up the system while you're playing games, so the impressive 8 gigs of RAM they say you are getting is actually only 5 because 3 FULL GIGS are reserved for operating procedures.
And of course many of the TV features in the Xbox One are not available internationally, meaning we will get inferior products for the same price, but the software is still active on our international machines, so we are still feeling the sting of almost half the machines' RAM going to background programmes we cannot use!
PS4 is free of virtually all of these, or at the least just not as bad. The Xbox One is a terrible gaming platform, a terrible product for consumers. It has been built with the intention to allow Mircosoft to control and dictate to their customer, and may even leaves the option open to sell their personal information to marketers of what they are doing in the privacy of their own homes.
