Sorry if it's already up, but just saw this article stating its rumored that xbox 3 may have measures to stop used games from playing on it. I can't imagine MS actually being stupid enough to follow through with this. Thoughts?

There isnt enough info to make any judgements. What i will say is if they make it to user unfriendly the majority of customers will play a different console

If that were the case, I wouldn't buy it. Take out one of the bigger selling points of consoles? Nah, I'll just completely become a PC gamer.

Unless they plan to make all their game digital downloads (which would be a really bad idea) then they don't have the tech to do that. Unless you hear otherwise and see the tech they are proposing then is a rumor and a dumb one.

Won't happen. Microsoft makes their money from stores buying the games from them. The stores don't make money on new game sales, they makem oney on used game sales. If they cut off used games, they cut off the store profits. The stores won't buy the new games, Microsoft won't make money.

eh, steam kind of works like that. It requires a unique CD_Key that is one-use. The Xbox-420, or whatever it's called, could do that or just use a digital market-place similar to XBLA, and stick only to that, as most people just buy games online.

The only way I could see Microsoft eliminating used games and still sell the console would be if they somehow make games on the next Xbox significantly cheaper. If they are still the same price and no used games could be played, then I'm not buying it. Simple as that.

We have a winner! Unless Microsoft is getting paid off by publishers to do this (which is doubtful, they've already got enough money to line a few olympic sized swimming pools with gold) there is absolutely no reason for them to do something like that. It would just hurt the marketability of their console and would make them the biggest assholes of the decade.

What so shocking about this? Every company is making a push toward getting rid of used game sales. This is just another step in that process. I don't really care one way or the other since I refuse to buy used games because I hate the fact that someone owned the game before I did. On that note, back to drinking and letting the Escapist continue being meh.

I thought MS and Sony (possibly Nintendo as well) got about $10 per game in licencing fees and are indeed "losing" money on the used games market just like the publishers. It's easy to see why they'd go down the same path as PC games just for another reason (secondhand market instead of copyright infringement).

Get used to 20 digit serial codes and online activation, console players, while you're paying out the ass for games. You've been heading there for a while now.

Note: This is not a troll attempt by the way, (it would have been way more trolley if it was) just me predicting the future. So far my predictions are a lot better than Pachter's at least. It's not much but it's something.

I'm sure nintendo would love this rumor to be true. Less people buying the new xbox means more potential consumers for the wiiu (i'm not saying that just because people wouldn't buy the new xbox means they will instantly buy the wiiu, what I am saying is that it opens up for more people that might buy it.)

Wait, wouldn't this be a violation of the first sales doctrine?
A part of copyright law that states the customer/ consumer has the right to do anything they want to there own copies of media including, selling, destroying or even copying of said media.

This rumour started about the PS3 when that was announced too. What's nice about this rumour is that it's started before the Xbox 3 has even been confirmed to exist.

Wouldn't this kill the rental market? Renting is one of the few things that makes console gaming worth it. I could care less about the 10% I save off a "used game".

Assuming there's still a disc format, they could still sell the disc with the content on, it just would be unuseable? Just like PC games.

I don't know the situation elsewhere in the world but PC games are about £10 cheaper when released in UK compared to the same console version so they might drop in price? If it can be done on the PC, then I can't see any reason why it can't be done on the Xbox 3.

If it's true, it'll be interesting to see if Sony follows suit on the PS4. If it doesn't, I can see Xbox 3 gaining a lot more exclusives next generation because publishers won't want to compete with the used game market on the PS4 and will just make more profit (theoretically) by releasing on the Xbox 2. Of course that only works if people buy the Xbox 3, which people will do to get the exclusive titles?

Owww my head hurts, why do you have to try to ruin the game industry Microsoft!?
