Depends if you have a big ass TV or not. The PS3 undeniably has that Blu-Ray drive, but as far as gaming etcetera goes I'd say get an Xbox 360 + Live.
Nothing so much wrong with either console, but because of my undying hatred of Sony I've always been partial to the 360.
P.S.
Do you want to run Linux on your console? Get a Phat PS3, as the Slims can't install/run Linux, and you have to hack the 360 pretty extensively to get Linux on it. Just FYI.
Linux you say? Wonderful!
OT: I like my PS3, and I like it's games. However, the Xbox is slightly cheaper and has almost all the same games.
The Xbox doesn't have quite the same level of HD, although if you're running Standard Definition, I find the graphics are better.
The controllers don't really make much of a difference.
Bluray seems to be gathering steam, so you may want to go for the PS3 as the Bluray player comes standard and combines both a media player and gaming console.
There's free online play for PS3, but a larger (not by much) community on Xbox. Both Xbox and PS3 have whiney retards online, but as far as I can tell, the PS3 is a little more chilled out.
You get a free headset with the Xbox, but the PS3 one is quite cheap and wireless.
Both have 250GB options, or did/are about too, so memory shouldn't be an issue.
If you have a PC controller (not Xbox) and a friend comes round, you should be able to use the PC controller on the PS3 (as ar as I know, I've only tried it with a Logitech USB controller). The same doesn't apply to the Xbox (as far as I know; it doesn't work with my PC pad).
Xbox can connect to MSN, your Windows Media Centre (if you have it) and soon you could be watching Sky TV if you have it.
The PS3 can browse the internet, and as far as I know, the Xbox can't, but it could just be harder to find.
The PS3 dashboard (or XMB) is far easier to Navigate (I find) and has themes, some which can change and stuff, so it feels abit more polished. The Xbox's Dashboard can be abit more difficult to use if your Pad is to responsive and is more Cartoon-y, but you do get to create an Avatar.
The Xbox works off of Microsoft Points, whereas the PS3 just uses real money. Both are "buyable", but having it spelt out in how much it costs can be handy.
You can/soon can stream films off of both the Networks, for a small price.
EDIT: The PS3 is quiter, but you may have to install some data (which shouldn't be an issue with a massive HDD).
EDIT: The Xbox may be cheaper in shops, but that changes when you add on the price of online (£8 a month, or £40 a year, the £40 Yearly Gold pushing the price higher than a PS3) and any other addons.
For a personal opinion: My friend has both an Xbox and a PS3, both of which he bought with his own hard earned cash. His Playstation 3 consists of maybe 30+ games, his Xbox Library can't be called a Library, as it only consists of 5 games...just saying, I'm not trying to flame, it's his choice and everything, but I'm just saying.
That's all I can think of for now, and I hope it helps you with your decision.
