http://thenextweb.com/media/2013/06/28/microsoft-partners-with-time-warner-to-launch-an-xbox-360-app-with-300-live-tv-channels-this-summer/

In rough summary, anyone who has a subscription to Time Warner Cable, and an Xbox Live Gold account, will be able to stream over three hundred channels through their Xbox360 and, according to a few articles floating around (all of them have fewer or more details, making it hard to pin down what's true) may have Kinect voice command similar to what's been planned for the Xbox One.

What's confusing about this is that, let's face it, a big ol' chunk of MS's reveal was devoted to all these cool TV-related things that the Xbox One would be capable of, and indeed, it's become a bit of a running gag how often television was mentioned. Still, fine, if they want to use it as a selling point, then fair enough... but to suddenly add the functionality to the older console seems like a move that could only hurt the Xbox One's potential install base; after all, if new consumers see they can use voice control and all that fancy stuff on a cheaper system, they might be less inclined to invest in the X1. For that matter, 360 owners who were looking forward to voice-controlled televisions might think twice about upgrading.

Did I mention this TV capability comes out in the summer, long before the X1 launch?

Worse, the fact that the 360's television features (rather unsurprisingly) require a Gold subscription don't leave much hope that the X1's fantasy football and other perks won't similarly be locked behind that paywall. Considering MS locks the Internet Browser on the 360 behind the paywall, odds are actually pretty good. If five years down the line, you decide to stop paying for Gold, then is that going to make all of the One's television features worthless? Would that effect a consumer's choice to buy it in the first place?

I've said it before and I say it again if I have to purchase or already have a cable subscription to use any sort of TV functionality, on-top of paying for the system as well as the live subscription, then there is no point in purchasing an XB1.

Agreed. For a feature designed to expand their market, if they put it behind a paywall, it's going to turn people away in droves.

What is the point? If I already have Time Warner Cable then can't I just watch those channels on my tv like normal? What does going through a console do and why is it good? I don't get it.

And once again it's a feature aimed mainly at their US customers. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Cable penetration rates are at an all-time, 20+ year low, as far as I know. They deregulated the industry heavily in 1996, which is why cable television prices (and cable profit margins) skyrocketed. Subsequently, nearly half of the country either can't afford it or refuses to prop up a monopoly. Getting into bed with cable television is a pretty good indicator that Microsoft isn't interested in everyone's money. They're after big fish - people with enough money to buy the overpriced console, spend for cable TV and XBL, and still have enough left over to buy all the wonderful products thrust at them by the kinect + dashboard combo.

It's not even trying to pretend to be a game console at this point.

Cable/pay TV in Australia really suffers from repeatitis. Which is why it struggles here now, that combined with the fact that it still has advertisements despite the fact that the user pays for the privilege.

If it is the same in the US, it wouldnt surprise me if this is another cause for the apathetic approach to it. So... What does Microsoft hope to achieve?

Hey, if I could get ALL of Foxtel's channels through Xbox One, that's got me sold. Yep. All I have to do is pay a 50 dollar Gold fee? No problem at all. That is ridiculously amazing.

Of course I doubt it would be THAT simple.
Not a chance in hell that would happen. Foxtel aren't going to give Microsoft there lineup for free which first sets up a direct competitor to themselves but ALSO gives them that service for free

The platinum package is $140 in HD a month, direct to Foxtel, they aren't going to give that away Microsoft. At best they will give 1 or 2 channels if that. Currently you can get foxtel on your Xbox but its cut down from what you get through Foxtel or Telstra and it costs you $20 for the basic package, $95 for everything (which is less than what you get from foxtel directly) and on top of that you have the internet fees because its streaming through the next

The article in the OP states that you'd need to pay for Gold and pay for the regular subscription.

So in short, TV on Xbone amounts to herp de fucking derp.

It offers nothing to any sane or mentaly capable person. A gimmick, nothing more.

When I was in the states it was the same stuff, so yeah theres a reason cable has been dropping in subscribers.

Who still actually cares about TV in 2013? I've got cable TV because it was a cheaper package to take it with my internet and line rental but all it ever shows is repeats of the same old horseshit. The few programs I am interested in are either on Netflix --which is an infinitely better deal than any cable package-- or I can pick them up on DVD for a fraction of the cost of my cable subscription a few months down the line.

My opinion probably doesn't reflect the majority, so perhaps that's why I'm having a hard time understanding why Microsoft, or any company, think pushing TV on your console would be an incentive to anyone.

It just seems that anyone who knows anything about gaming/modern technology would know that cable TV is a dying industry, which will almost certainly start taking the same massive hits the music industry did once people realised they were no longer at the mercy of extortionist publishers/brick and mortar stores, and could get what they wanted for much cheaper (or free) elsewhere.

It's not for the Xbone, it's for the 360. But then again, the Xbone version is probably going to be the same.

I'd imagine the gimmick is supposed to be a picture-in-picture sort of deal. "You can be working on your K/D ratio while watching Jersey Shore, dude!"

(I've made this joke before but...)

The last time I watched Cable I got really paranoid...Sure, all I was doing was watching TV but I didn't give Microsoft any of my money for the experience.

---

It doesn't make sense to me to offer a service for a device, on a device that requires the first device to function in the first place. I've had the ability to watch cable for decades without an Xbox, 360 or, otherwise. It doesn't work the other way around though unless Microsoft is also planning to launch an LCD screen that attaches directly to the console.

It's a bad thing in my opinion. It's bad enough that people in other countries have to pay more for their machines and subscriptions etc, but we get less features, sales and such. It's why I cancelled my XBL subscription, they don't give a shit about people outside the US.

Does it need a cable box and line to use? If so its a cheaper way of having more than one TV capable of viewing the cable service, at least if you have the same systems as we have in the UK. You pay additional subscription fees for each extra box, if you want your kids or whatever to be able to watch the service being able to do it via a console might be cheaper.

See, that's what I mean. It's clear they don't want people outside of the US as customers, so people cancel or don't get a XBL subscription. I see that as a good thing as it saves us money. But, it also is a bad thing since we get less for the same amount.

I don't have cable and don't watch enough TV to give a damn. Netflix and Hulu and the internet allow me to watch anything I want to without having to pay an arm and a leg so I could care less. Seems like a complete waste of time and resources to be honest.
