The next Xbox coming out Fall 2013 will utilize a midrange GPU released several months ago (AMD 6670). After 9 years waiting consoles will release a new machine still incapable of playing 1080p native at 60fps (good luck with any AA).

So, for everyone expecting the announcement of a next gen console, my condolences.

I am actually kinda glad, I dont want to shell out cash for new hardware, specially if the architecture was going to be redesigned again.

The new Xbox slim has at least passed some marginal efficiency tests, so its less likely to brick itself, and after the launch of the 360, I cant put enough trust in console makers to make a machine that is out the door without problems on their first edition.

Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/24/report-next-gen-xbox-to-launch-october-november-2013-with-this/] has a story. But it all stems from a rumor on IGN [http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/01/24/xbox-720-will-be-six-times-as-powerful-as-current-gen].

Or their third edition since the Xbox 360 Elite had all the same problems as the launch ones.

Current "rumors" being spread that it is approximately 20% more powerful than the Wii U. This might be good news for multi-platform releases, as the Wii made it impossible.

They probably can't make them much more powerful for market reasons, games on current generation consoles already cost millions to make.., upgrade the hardware even more you will upgrade the budget to make the games too

If it really is like the iPhone 4S then Microsoft will be deliriously happy - the fastest selling phone ever? Apple's biggest quarter in history (and second only to Exxon Mobil in one quarter of 2008 as biggest profit ever for a quarter?)

Cool, seems like MS needs to start thinking of things to do with dumptrucks full of money.

Ah... a 6670. Good to see them stepping up to the plate...

That means my CF 5850s will only be about 6x more powerful.

Also, as for "better hardware will drive up production costs" I actually think that's totally wrong. Studios have to spend a LOT of time and resources on optimizing for a console. Yes, they can squeeze a lot of performance out of it because they have low level access, but all that tweaking takes time. Lots and lots of time. Higher end hardware = less tweaking needed to get the same experience, and any time available for tweaking is just gravy sauce.

Um, midrange tech from several months ago can still do anti-aliased 1080p. What's the problem here?

firstly this is specualtion and rumour at the moment, nothing concrete till Microsoft tells us it is. Secondly, considering that some game already play at 1080p (very few admittedly) and some already play at 720p 60FPS I somehow doubt that they won't be able to do 1080p 60FPS on something 6 times more powerful. People can push consoles a lot further than PC's as it is. If the Xbox 360 was a PC of a similar spec it would handle no where near tje type of graphics and stuff that it does.

The 6670 may be an unimpressive card but it can still do 1080p on well optimised games in a pc. PC gamers will need dual 6990s to run the kind of shitty ports most companies run out.

So given that HDTV did not standardize until 2005, and you did not see a widespread market migration to 1080 resolution screens until somewhere after 2008, who exactly was impatiently waiting on native 1080 resolutions before the release of the original xbox during the early half of the PS2/gamecube era?

Also while were at it, how is this logical to compare to a device with a dual core 1. something processor, 512 of system ram like the ARM limited Iphone 4s?

What I dont understand is this type of comparison. Honestly, IF there is any legitimate justification for blame regarding the level of quality for the systems proposed specs.. it rests SOLEY at the feet of those who have been rabidly clamoring for a new console generation that is about 3 years too early and comes without enough serious hardware advancements to justify it. Perhaps if people had shown a little restraint instead of bellowing out new console generation before the current one had hit 4 years, the developers would not have been in such a rush to get new hardware, and thus have to pick from what is still in essence last generation parts.

Six times more powerful than current gen systems and still much much weaker than my current PC rig! I am not being a PC elitist, I just wish the specs would be improved by a larger margin so I might actually want to buy one.

I wish people would realise that a console does not need as good specs as a PC as they do a lot more with a lot less.

I'd like to see a console run crysis on max, which my PC can, with ''a lot less''. They do 'worse with a lot less. Like everything else in the universe.

Tell me, what games play 1080p? some may have been upscaled to 1080p, but none play at 1080p native which is a MAJOR difference. Also this upscaling makes the FOV even worse as it does tax the system abit, seriously, 55 FOV on Killzone 2-3...
