Um, midrange tech from several months ago can still do anti-aliased 1080p. What's the problem here?
Not universally. Most recent mid-high end titles (BF3, Skyrim etc.) won't even hit 40+FPS on that when on high settings.

My 5870 is significantly better, and that's getting on in hardware age. They would be better off using either a better 6-series or 5-series.
You forget that consoles do miraculous things with their hardware due to specialization. Don't forget that Skyrim is running on mid-upper range specs from 2005...

You know, the current GPU in the Xbox is really weak compared to a something like a HD 6850/ GTX 560 or higher. But if they can pull what they did (Skyrim, Crysis) from what was pretty much a ATI Radeon X1800 is rather amazing.

Big deal... Grow up. You can put specs up your ass. I barely care.

Deciding what console to buy due to its specs is really low and non-Hardcorish...surprising since this is a game forum.
Right, because nobody cared when Nintendo went from 8 bit (NES) to 16 bit (SNES) to 64 bit (N64). Nobody really cared about the improvements between that an NGC either. Nor going from PS1 to PS2 to PS3. Nope, nobody really should ever, nor ever has, given two shits about the hardware behind a console generation.

I could build you a decent one for the price of a release day PS3.
Better than this?
Possibly. I haven't looked at computer part prices in a while. Back in June I built a rig that will be playing games on ultra-high for the next 5+ years for $1000. It could probably last longer but I'm a bit of a tech junkie and will likely replace parts as time goes by just because...
Would that include the monitor, speakers etc?
No, it probably couldn't include the monitor. But you can't really fault me for that. A console doesn't come with a TV. I assume you, like me already have something for listening to sound and have a keyboard and mouse. Otherwise, we wouldn't be talking, lol. Things like that are easily recycleable from one computer to the next. Better quality monitors, speakers, mouses, and keyboards could come later.
I know I can't fault you for that, but I do have to factor that in. I own a TV but I don't have a monitor or keyboard or anything like that. I use a laptop.
Ah, I got ya. A decent-ish monitor isn't too, too bad in price.

A standard keyboard is about $10. I suppose the full package would set you back $550-$650

Right cool, I know where I stand now. Thanks :)

Also, $650 is just over £400. Do you think the costs would be about that price? Or do PC parts have like for like costs across countries, meaning it'd cost me £650?

Tell me, what games play 1080p? some may have been upscaled to 1080p, but none play at 1080p native which is a MAJOR difference.
Well...

God of War: Origins Collection
God of War Collection Volume II
Ico
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
MLB09: The Show
NBA07 (demo)
NBA08 (demo)
Ridge Racer 7 (demo)
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
Virtua Tennis 3
World Series Of Poker 2008

1942: Joint Strike
Blast Factor
Commando 3
Echochrome
Elefunk
Fat Princess
Go Puzzle
High Velocity Bowling
Locoroco Cocoreccho
Pixel Junk Monsters/Racers/Eden
Rocketmen
Stardust HD
Sudoku
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3

Fifa Street 3
NBA Street Home court (demo)
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
Virtua Tennis 3

Not to mention all the games that are native 720p. And with this new hardware being 6x more powerful, that's looking great for consoles and this '1080p' thing that everyone finds so important. I personally think my current 360 games look and run awesome on my HDTV, so 6x more powerful is pretty awesome. Given the age of the current console tech, I think the devs have been doing flat-out amazing things. Watching what could be done with the 360 and PS3 from launch until now has been very fascinating to behold. So I can't wait for the next generation!
Yeah, i'm with you, SOME games do 1080p, but it's not friggin acceptable that SOME games can do 1080p in 2012! and hell, the games you picked were mostly old games or games that isn't on the very top shelf of graphics.
1080p is not optimal for action-oriented games. 720p is far better suited for that.

So the rumor is that it will be 6x more powerful than 360, yet by PC standards, it will still be outdated. That's good news for me because I won't have to upgrade my PC a lot. Well, if the rumor is true. I just don't believe anything coming from IGN.

Yeah, I imagine it would be about £400. Being in Europe, I'm sure your shipping costs wouldn't be ridiculous like a place like Australia so there should be no gouging on that front. Just keep in mind that the price I'm throwing out is for someone to build you a computer. A Dell or an HP that cost £400 is only good enough for heating food.

Get a tech savvy friend or two, find some compatible components, and build them into a computer. This past June was the first time I ever did it and it was easier than I thought it would be. The parts all come with installation instuctions and there are video guides all over youtube.

I mean it won't be right now of course (I'm a student so I have no money ^_^) but I guess if I save up for a bit I could afford one.

They're stupid in my opinion. What they should do is make it completely DD, then with the money saved from retailers/production, etc., they could make better hardware while keeping it affordable. They get the same amount of money while we get better games.

Otherwise atleast get bluray or equivalent.

Unless the new gen can run Unreal Engine 4 at 60 fps, it is an utter waste of time. It would make a nice hole in the market for someone to slip in a retard proof cheap PC that would hook up to your TV a destroy the games for the consoles.

There's places to save money here, and it's a small form factor case so that it can "fit under the TV".

The next Xbox coming out Fall 2013 will utilize a midrange GPU released several months ago (AMD 6670).
Begs the serious question of why the 6670 over a 6850 based chipset?

The 6850's cheap, being phased out of retail production and can even survive being used with passive cooling. But would deliver a massive extra chunk of power, even using a down volted version in the style of mobile chips.
Maybe they did not pick the 6850 becuase even though it can be passively cooled, the cooler takes up 3 slots! Really take a look at the cards over the 6670 that have passive cooling and imagine trying to fit them and their coolers in a console. You are right that we should be looking at GPU's that are being used in laptops as laptops are similar in form factor and cooling performance to console cases.
