I don't even know what to say about this. The complete lack of backwards compatibility doesn't surprise me even a little bit; they basically ignored it last time and then threw in a juryrigged system after the fact but now it appears they've just stopped trying at all. What really REALLY pisses me off is the "No used games" thing.

The entire whining speal that Game Developers go on about "Oh no people are buying used games instead of new and we're not getting paid for every single person that plays our game" strikes me as acting incredibly entitled. EA or Mircosoft complaining about used games is like IKEA complaining about garage sales. Yeah, you're losing some money but, and here's the big fucking thing, someone still bought that game in the first place. Someone still spent that initial 60 bucks for Brown Army Shooter 17, which means you still got paid. So rather then whining about the million you lost to used games, concentrate on the 12 million you did make.

God damn it, between this and the insane mounts of DRM and day one dlc, I'm seriously considering saying "fuck it" to actually legitimately buying games at all. If they're not happy with the money I'm giving them, they they can fuck off and have none.

It will essentially be a Steam machine, to any accountant that is just a wet dream as they get absolute control over sales, no retailers, no second hand, no avoiding internet extortion fees, every dime in their pocket.

I really don't see any reason they wouldn't do it, console gamers sure aren't ones to complain when shafted.

It's a prisoner dilemma situation, all three companies have to gain if they prohibit used sales. However should one turn, they possibly have lots to gain while the other two corporate.

First off, this article is over a month old.
And secondly, it doesn't mention anything about no disk drive.
And thirdly, EVERYTHING SO FAR IS JUST RUMORS.

Wow, I wonder how long it will take Microsoft to figure out that most countries around the world (especially those that have high sales figures for the X360) don't have high speed/high quota internet connections to make this kind of platform viable?

Why are so many people taking that article as fact?

That dev is speculating. Nothing more. Right, everything about a next gen Xbox is rumor, up to and including its very existence. Until an official statement is made, it's a little early to fly off the handle.

Even if it is true, you know how you can change it? Take action and refuse to buy the machine. Send mails. Start a campaign on the internet. Actually do stuff.
But no, you won't, because you all want Call of Duty MW 7 or whatever. So either refuse to buy the machine (which you won't, for there will be no other alternatives if this strikes through. If Xbox pulls this, so will the rest), or shut up.

They are not stupid. They know they'll lose customers over the world, but they also know most of the money is in north america and western europe.

When the publisher makes less than 50% of the new price from retail and that retail copy is resold a couple times used, you know you can shut out a majority of the potential gaming audience and still make a bigger profit with this scheme.

Am I the only one worried about the future of collecting? As a hardcore collector, I feel that my kind are ignored. Alot. When physical games stop coming forever, there will be nothing to collect anymore. even though I specialize in retro games, new games will be retro in the future!

Retro gaming will die when the next generation becomes retro and current retro goes so rare, it's imbossible to find.

Okay, developers. Look. We have used markets for music, books, cars, pretty much everything you can think of. Why the hell do you think games should be exempt from that?

I think this is cool. They'll finally get it so theres no used game market. We get our games from online. And maybe they'll do what the PS3 did and offer old titles for download.

Really just so long as you never get robbed by not getting a game you paid for. Everything should be pretty cool.
Provided it's true.

*Flame shield* It's just optimism. But I want protection.

Although I'm taking this with a grain of salt at the moment, if they pull this kind of crap with the next console generation, I'm switching over to PC. Ease of use and inexpensiveness will only go so far, and if I'm gonna get screwed like this, I can learn to upgrade my hardware.

Nintendo I guess.
They would be the last ones you'd expect to go 100% DD. Reason: lots of kids play N.
Children don't have money let alone credit cards and parents don't download games for their kids as a present, so retail it is.

This is a good opportunity for Nintendo in any case.

Oh for God's sake, seriously? I've been at like 10KB/s internet speed all day because that's just how awful my internet gets when congestion happens. If gaming goes all digital distribution then that means I'm done, though not by choice. I'll always have my trusty PC (and possibly new PlayStation if it doesn't follow suit), I guess.

PCs have been dealing with no used sales for millennia at this point. Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3... I could go on.
well..that is only partially true.
the savy pc gaming master race member creates a new steam account with a new email adress for games he buys and intends to sell after beating them. then you just put the account for sale on ebay.

allthough valve cries big dollar sign shaped tears about it, at least here in europe they can't legaly do anything against it.

If these rumours turn out to be true, all they accomplish is confirm that they'll get no sales from me.
