So users must constantly be online? Hahahaha! Good luck getting this thing to work outside of America and East Asia.

Decision time guys: Are games products or lifetime licenses? Can't be both.

1. This is a rumour.
2. It's like all the other rumours.
3 This has been covered, and there's even official Escapist coverage of it. Hell, this is from February sixth, more than a month ago, at which point the dev's comments were jumped over.

4.

no retailers
Except, even in this rumour, they're still selling physical copies.

Even if it is true, you know how you can change it? Take action and refuse to buy the machine. Send mails. Start a campaign on the internet. Actually do stuff.
But no, you won't, because you all want Call of Duty MW 7 or whatever. So either refuse to buy the machine (which you won't, for there will be no other alternatives if this strikes through. If Xbox pulls this, so will the rest), or shut up.
Day before launch: Millions vow XBox Boycott

Day after Launch: XBox 3 sets one-day sales records.

Interesting that we seem to be going back to N64 days of carts :)

It seems like a decent solution, so long as the machine has plenty of storage for downloads too.

I also wish MS would announce a name for it so people wouldn't use the XBox 720, name that just sounds silly.

I normally call it XBox 3, or the next XBox :)

It's a rumor. That's that.

If it wasn't a rumor i'd still be fine with it. The way i see it, Steam makes a ton of money, Microsoft wants in on this market. There you go.

I suppose it boils down to "Does Steam make more money than Microsoft's current business model." Since Steam never releases sales figures, who knows.

You know what worries me most about this rumour?

The fact that the game is linked to your console. What if your console crashes?! you would loose all your games... :(

I'm still treating this as just a rather far-fetched rumour, Durall's reaction is worrying though. I don't believe this industry profiting in the billions is going to fall apart from used game sales and let's face it, gamers "growing to understand" just means them becoming so acclimatised to it that they don't care and that the trademark gamer apathy comes into play.

Oh for the love of-

It HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED. When Microsoft themselves reveal it, then freak out about it!

Personally I think this would be a fantastic change for our business. Even though the consumers would be up in arms about it at first, they will grow to understand why and that it won't kill them.

Ah, rumor mills. Is there nothing they can't do?

If a company did do this, the only way out is to vote with your wallets. Everybody wants change, but it's only those who actually take action who make it happen.

Yeah this rumor came around last cycle too [http://www.tjoystiq.com/2005/11/08/playstation-3-wont-play-used-games/]. Of course then it was the PS3 that wasn't going to play used games. Well we all know how that rumor turned out. I suspect this one will turn out about the same.

Although I'm taking this with a grain of salt at the moment, if they pull this kind of crap with the next console generation, I'm switching over to PC. Ease of use and inexpensiveness will only go so far, and if I'm gonna get screwed like this, I can learn to upgrade my hardware.
PCs have been dealing with no used sales for millennia at this point. Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3... I could go on.
True. While I didn't think of that at time of writing, PC still has mod support and a better distribution service. Though I guess I'd still be getting screwed, the screw-er would at least be a bit more pleasant.

yall actually believe that shit?

psssh...seriously people, use your brains.

Eliminating backwards compatibility would be damaging to the xbox's sales due to everyone wanting to play halo and what not on something that's works.
and making it digital download only is stupid and Microsoft knows it. No one except probably steam would consider that because that tend to limit the max amount of games one can play which would hurt sales.
And going back to halo....thats microsofts baby, and the announced that halo 4 would not be for the new xbox.....put 2 and 2 together....

yeah, id wish people would stop makeing threads based off bullshit rumors everyone knows is false.

I think what they're trying to say is along the lines of 'if I'm going to have to deal with this regardless it might as well be on PC'

It's just a rumour so I wouldn't worry about it. There's no way it'd happen as it would piss off brick and mortar retailers like Gamestop off too much, and they might refuse to stock them. It'd be a huge shot in the foot

Your comments about the company acting entitled is highly amusing.

This is like gamers wanting to boycott a game because they don't like something about it.

Gaming companies have been acting entitled since gamers have been complaining.

Unfortunately most gamers are whiny, and fail to realize that throwing a tantrum like a kid in the supermarket may not net you what you want, but what the 'parent' decides.
