Graphic's is not that big of a deal. It's all disk io/memory bandwith and cpu.

Gaming graphics are pretty darn tootin as they are. The thing that could see serious improvements are all around environments, keeping many game objects in memory, keeping multiple a.i. threads running at the same time, basically all the stuff that ehances the complexity and richness of the gaming experience.

All the "open world" games right now are basically b.s. - think of it as those old west towns where you walk through the town and everything is just a facade propped up by lumber. That's what we have now.

Hell, I think the best experience you could have in a game is one where something happens different each time you play. How frequently does that happen?

In my opinion the next Xbox COULD be capable of doing that, but that doesn't mean game publishers will be forced into using all that power right away. What we'll probably see is titles with graphics like on the previous xbox, and then a few months later, somebody will dip their toe in the water and make a game with a bit better graphics and see how it turns out.

If that experiment succeeds, soon, others will jump on the bandwagon slowly, and then someone will try making a title that utilizes the whole potential, and once again, depending on the results, others might follow.

Yeah, didn't someone say prior to its release that the Playstation 2 would generate graphics on the order of those of Toy Story? That wasn't complete bullshit.

Meh, Graphics don't mean SHIZDIZZLE to me.

As long as the game is worth while, it's fine in my book.

How will it effect console gaming?

Well, if you thought the 599USD 599USD 599USD 599USD meme was funny back in 2006 with the PS3, then your in luck. Because if this is true, then you are going to get to spam an even more hilarious price point in X-Box 720 threads!

Consoles? Low cost of entry? HA!

EDIT: Also, if this is true, this is only going to drive up the production cost and cycle of games to an even more crazy point, thus its going to crowd out even more smaller dev companies. If this ends up coming to fruition, I am going to predict that the average price of games is going to jump up to 80-90 USD (for Americans). Honestly? I think it could lead to another video games crash (specifically in consoles), since there are going to be fewer players than ever, and games and consoles will be more expensive than ever as well. So basically they will have shrunk their consumer base while increasing the cost of production... not a good combination.

The existance of graphics processing at an affordable price will probably affect PC Gaming by being graphics processing at an affordable price.
Um, judging by the fact you can easily get a video card capable of running most current games on medium to high for no more than 150 dollars, I'd have to say your conclusion isn't as obvious as you so smugly thought...

PC gaming has always been more affordable than console gaming. That's not going to change with this generation, and probably won't with the next.

That claim is just bullshit.

Rendering Avatar took more than a months on a gigantic server farm. It will take at least a decade before you can render graphics like that in real time on consumer hardware.
It all depends on scope and scale of what is being rendered. A single character model could easily be rendered in real time. Dozens of discrete characters along with miles of absurdly detailed alien rain forest? That will take some time before we reach real time rendering on consumer hardware.

If it us true it means will still have the same type of games that cost more to make and more to buy. Actually this article reminds me of of Final Fantasy 13, and how it looked pretty, and how just about everything else in the game was kind of shit.

Sorry to ruin it for everyone, but Sega CD already did the movie quality graphics thing.

And Myst beat them to it even before that.
Well, only by a few months (on Mac!) and Myst didn't release for a console until the Saturn/Playstation era. I'm also pretty sure there were other FMV games before either of these. Maybe Sewer Shark? I think it came out with the Sega CD.

Obviously ironic point was obvious and ironic. Worse, your rebuttal to 'Having cheap video cards will mean having cheap video cards' (a tautology) is to reply that video cards are, in fact... cheap, with a sense of smug superiority.

Step back, and rethink what you're doing here.

Judging by the fact that no one else seemed to "get it," your point probably wasn't as "obvious and ironic" as you previously believed.

There's a reason why sarcasm and verbal irony as an extension, tend to not work well in text, you know. Well, it can work, but you clearly just aren't very good at it, and its only made worse by throwing in that tired old meme.

I'm a PC gamer, and many of my friends are PC gamers. We are not PC gamers because the graphics are better. We are PC gamers because we prefer that interface. Even if consoles did get better graphics, we would still be PC gamers for the very reason, as I said, that we prefer the interface.

Good point, and I apologize. It's too bad no one mentioned that to Mark Twain or Charles Dickens, though. They might have had successful careers and legacies in English literature.
