So my xbox is done in. The worst part about it is that it was the shitty 4GB model, which I never wanted to get but that's what happens when your mum buys your console. I was young, and stupid, and should have forked out for the 250GB. For those who don't know the 250GB version has a hard drive you can take out, but the shitty 4GB one uses a flash drive that's built in. So my XCOM, Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row 1 2 and 3, GTA4, Fallout 3, Fable 2 and 3, Prototype 1, Mass Effect 1 2 and 3 and Assassins Creed 1 2 3 Brotherhood and Revelations saves are all gone. Dead, buried and there ain't fuck all I can do about it. The worst part, I mean more worse than what I said before, is that I keep remembering save games that I lost so I can't move on and just forget.

So share your stories of console death and hours of save game lost.

Capcha: heart strings. Oh just fuck you.

Dang, how did you fit all that in a 4GB console?!

Anyway, I guess I've been lucky enough to not have a console die on me. However, I've had to put perfectly good consoles away because they're "old". For example, my PS2 is still working just fine but because I don't enough room or outlets to hook up all my systems at the same time, I must put some of them away. I ended up buying a 60GB (BC) PS3. It's very old now so I try to back up my files through PS+.

But...it still pains me to have my PS2 in my closet. When less and less PS2 games were being released, I was sort of forced to get a PS3. I was peer pressured by society!

Man that's cold blooded, captcha. You have my condolences, all those hours of saves lost is really bad news.

As for my own story, I'll tell you about the very first time my 360 died on me.

It was my birthday in 2006 when I got my first 360. We ate dinner, and I eagerly went home waiting to plug my new next-gen console in and give it a go.

I got home, unsealed the box which unleashed that glorious new-console smell into my room. Wasted no time plugging it all up, and turned it on. And I watched my TV in amazement as the next-generation of consoles has finally arrived.

And then it fucking red ringed.

The light didn't even get a chance to turn green. As soon as I turned it on, the RROD light flashed on and pretty much crushed my heart and soul that moment. That's right. It was dead before I even took it out of it's box.

I immediately called Microsoft, who walked me through the cursory tests to determine what the problem was. And sighed/facepalmed when the operator told me I needed to get a new one.

I drove to the store my parents got the console from, fuming with rage, but luckily was able to get it switched out for a new one.... Which red ringed again some time later. But at least i got to play the damn thing for awhile.

So yeah. That's my story.
And is also my response to those people who believe that the RROD error ONLY happens when owners mistreat their 360's. To you, I present my mysterious case of being sold a brand new dead console/aka The case of the Deadbox 360.

My first PS3 died a while back. I posted it on here asking if anyone knew any way to fix it. Everyone was really nice, but short of sending it to Sony, they all said it was toast. One person posted a picture of a kitten hanging on the end of a rope with the text that said, "Hang in there!" That made me laugh.

The two worst parts of the whole thing: My first PS3 could play PlayStation and PS2 games, and I couldn't find anywhere in town that still sold those, so I lost that ability. Second, I lost my save file for Record of Agarest War. I had beaten the game and was working my way through the otherworld plain, and it was a lot of work, but I was going to get that platinum trophy. All that work, gone. I can't even stomach the thought of starting over.

I had only one Xbox on me. I got one kill in Black Ops 1 when the game froze, I check it then BAM, RRoD

My first Xbox was with me since 2006.

I am a master at save rotation. Apparently Microsoft were displeased with me owning 3 other save devices :/

I understand that feel bro, I've already had two xbox'es, and one PS3 crap out on me.

But...When my original Purple Gamecube bit the dust, that was the most tragic. So many great teenage memories with that system, my new Silver one can't replace my love for my old one.

RIP 2002 - 2007

First time mine RROD'd I suspected something wasn't right. It turned on making an odd grating sound, then the game loaded really slowly. After about 25 mins it froze up, I tried restart and RROD was sat there waiting for me.
The second time in the middle of a game it just crashed to an RROD, no warning just happened.
3rd Xbox is alive for now...on the plus side Microsoft replaced each one, free, under warranty (despite it actually being out of warranty)

Before being "misplaced" during a move, my PS2 slim was, while not broken, practically unusable. It overheat very quickly, only being able to be played for a couple hours before it would freeze. I miss the PS2...such a great system...

That was the only system that ever bit the dust on me.

In what way is your console dead?

If you can access the dashboard, you could copy your saves onto a USB device, or you could upload them to your Cloud Storage and re-download them when you recover your Gamertag on another console.

My older sister braved the cold and waited in line on launch night to get me a 20G X-Box 360 "Premium Edition" for Christmas back in '05. I was pretty upset when it died in early 2009 to a gitchy update. My college roommate's X-Box 360 was killed on the same day by the same update.

For reasons I admittedly don't remember anymore, Microsoft was unwilling to repair/replace either of our consoles. He ended up paying to get his fixed, though I didn't bother. At the time I was mostly spending my gaming time raiding in WoW and I was kinda tight on cash, so I couldn't justify fixing my console. I mostly moved on to PC gaming exclusively.

Thankfully it did have the removable hard drive, so I still have all of my old save files on the off chance I ever get it fixed or replaced.

If it was dead dead did u not just pry it out? or failing that, smash it out?

On the topic of the posters Q :I was the only person I've ever met for quite a while with a release Xbox, had it since day one, about 3 weeks ago I moved it to a different room after it having worked fine in there, to a bigger tv as had some mates coming over for some Halo 4 split screen an beers.

Set it up, worked for about 30 mins, turned it off for all of 10 mins to go get my mate who couldn't find the house. Came back 3 Red Rings.

And thus the bragging of still having a working release xbox 360 ended about 3 weeks ago...... Also led to an evening with no xbox, on an evening planned to play xbox, but that's another story.

It doesn't turn on whatsoever, and if I get lucky and it does it just red dots me. And the technicians have no idea what's wrong.

Have you tried using a different power supply?

If the power supply you're currently using is faulty (e.g. it's not providing enough power or it's output is fluctuating), then the XBox will red-dot immediately to prevent itself being damaged by the faulty power supply.

A red-dot or RROD isn't inherently bad, in fact it's a good thing because it prevents more serious damage to the components as soon as it detects a potential problem. It's almost the same as a Blue Screen of Death for a PC, except with less diagnostic information.

My 360 did a RROD the other day because there was a momentary interruption to our power i.e. the lights flickered for about 1/4 of a second, my computer started to shut down then resumed normal behaviour, but my 360 did a RROD just to be safe. I unplugged the cables and then reconnected everything and it works as well as ever.

What I'm getting at is you shouldn't assume it's broken and everything is irretrievable until you're ruled out a faulty power supply. If it was a PC that had the same symptoms, i.e. doesn't switch on and if it does, it does a BSOD immediately, then it would be obvious that the power supply was at fault. Exactly the same thing can apply to the 360.
