In a posting, Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb explained the hike:

"Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.
Wait, what. Isn't PSN free? Does XBL have a lot more stuff on it? What he is saying doesn't make sense to me.
There's also Steam, which is far better than both. Granted it does have its haters but so does everything.

It's basically a nothing price increase. For the service Xbox Live provides I would happily pay a great deal more. I have all three main consoles and if I want to play online I play xbox 360, it's the complete package.

If people are complaining that they can't afford it, then they should have not had the money to buy a console and games...or their parents to buy them for them.

"Analyst Jesse Divinich of EEDAR believes this price increase will not have a major effect of Microsoft's momentum or subscription base,"

and thus my gold account and thousands of others have been immediately canceled upon reading the above. He is already wrong. I'm already paying more money than I should for a borderline worthless service so why do I need to pay more?

Wow...I've been putting off getting more Gold for the last few months because its been too expensive (plus I can't be arsed). I'll just stick with Silver thank'ee very much!

Sure, its a small hike, but Fuck this. I don't use any features on xbox live other than multi-player, why should I have to pay more the same service?
Yep... this exactly... they should do a two-tier system like PSN has, instead of just milking us for money... How about... instead of putting up all of that extra shit content that NO ONE wants, you lower the price and take some content away?

Yes it is. Yes it does.
No it doesn't. Xbox Live Gold isn't even worth using for free, let alone that it would have something that makes it worth paying for.

What does Live do that PSN doesn't?
It's a shame that doesn't quite have the same ring as "We do what Nintendon't."

I own an XBox 360 but it rarely gets any use - I do all my online gaming on the PC. It's just a mindset that I have - the PC is always connected, the internet is always available, but the Consoles are there for a more private/secluded/single-player experience.

Given my recent experiences with Steam (and that fact that apparantly a lot of people on there aren't very happy with Steam right now) I have to disagree with you on that.

Steam is just as bad as everyone else, we just don't like to admit it.

Back on topic, on the one hand I can see why some people will be unhappy with this news (a raise in price is never a good thing) but you can also see it as something of a weeding out process for 'undesireables' on XBL.

Most of us dislike the stereotypical 'screechy, obnoxious 12 year old American kid', with news of a price raise there will be some people who will choose not to play online anymore or simply can't afford to (I worded that really badly, I know, but I have just woken up so give me a break).

I'd say its better than GFWL. Then again anything is better than GFWL.

ofcourse they're doing this right before Halo comes out....assholes. Meh, I still enjoy all the games I play on it, so I'll keep my subscription...for now.

Oh, and people who pay month-to-month- you are being HORRIBLY ripped off. buy a year at a time, you'll save big moneys.

I think people need to get a perspective here. In America, it's going up by $10 a year. That's less than $1 a month. It's an entirely inconsequential amount of money. I'm in the UK and i pay monthly, so it's costing me another pound a month. I'm not even going to notice that, and I doubt most people will either. This will change pretty much nothing.
