Because if we weren't constantly paying Microsoft money, how would they bathe in 100 dollar bills?

Nah, they'd still probably do that anyways.

Once again, since I honestly see a lot of pigheadedness on this thread.
Please watch this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyq5yu3_dGQ&feature=sub

The above video is about the pros and cons of each online service.

Also, for those who are crying about online service "Wahh, $60 a month." You realize if you break that down, you're paying about $5 a month, right? Seriously... $5 a month for something that WORKS. And works WELL.

Honestly, it seems like a petty complaint to me.

When PSN starts charging money, AND THEY ARE GOING TO START CHARGING, their online needs to have a better, faster and easier user interface.

Yes, I love my PS3, but I just don't like the online on it. Will that stop me from loving my inFamous, Socom, MGS4, ect? No.

A game or two? Not even a game.

Games are $60, Xbox is $50 for a year.

I don't know why. I just grin and bear it. I wish it was free, but it likely wouldn't be as good.
That's still ridiculously exspensive, especially since everyone else gets those same services for free (xfire, steam or, PSN). There's a reason windows live is free.

If people would stop paying for it like cattle following each other into the stunner then Microsoft would stop charging for it like they had to with the pc. The worst thing for the argument is the jackasses who say they don't mind paying for it, why the fuck do you pay sixty dollers for a game and than pay for server access?

It's somewhere in the middle between the two viewpoints, really. Microsoft charge for it because, frankly, they can. However, Xbox live does generally tend to be much better that the PSN (less lag, better interface etc), simply because people demand to get more out of a service they're paying for, so in some ways you could say that it was worth it.

If you tried it and didn't like it, no worries, it's not for everyone. Some of my friends love it, others hate having to pay so utterly that they switched to the PS3/PC for multiplayer gaming. Horses for courses, folks.

Why does it cost money? 'cos people are willing to pay for it. At least it's not all that much, WoW, for example, costs $156 a year.

Having to pay to be online was a deciding factor for me when I had money burning a hole in my pocket and decided to hold it over the ps3 and 360's head to see who could jump the highest.

Sorry microsoft!

Here is the only arguement I have. It works. My PSN connectivity is horrible. I'm not a fan of the PS controllers so if a game comes out multiplatform, I get the 360 version (plus the community on XBL is many times greater in numbers than PSN, so you can find matches on almost any game), plus plus, I have more "friends" on XBL. Saying all that, my PSN seems to be down or very unresponsive almost half the time. I've had a 360 since launch and the only time XBL has been down (that I can remember) has been for system updating. The only advantage PSN has is a web brouser, and if it only works half the time, what is the point. Which XBL should really have a brouser by now, it has everything but that (Twitter, Facebook, last.fm, Netflix, Zune, additional movie rentals from XBL, XBL arcade). Also, another weird thing about PSN, nobody uses a mic. I played Killzone 2 and LBP online for a while and NOBODY used a mic. If that is the community I am going to connect to, no thanks. I'll take my chances with the tards on XBL, I'd rather mute 1/5 people than have very not talking.

I will also freely admit that I'm 33 and have a high paying job, so $40 a year (Best Buy sells 12 month cards for $40, or at least they use to) is nothing. But I can definately understand someone without a good income having reservations about it.

I'm going to take the non Microsoft bashing approach.

After a year of having Gold (like myself) you will start to take it for granted, and so the minute it goes, (most) people with cash in their wallets will buy it in an instant. You'd be surprised how much people won't give up the luxury of being able to join parties or their friends' game. I for one got my first Gold on my Bday, so as soon as it runs out I just get another 12 months as a present and so on, despite the fact I don't take advantage of Gold every day but because I only ever have to buy it once a year it doesn't really get to me. Of course I do spend an embarrassing amount of money of MS Points.

And considering many people only buy a 360 and make an account just so they can play CoD or Halo 3 online, MS makes a lot of money out of it. But just about all of the money probably goes to server maintenance, although it all depends on what game you're playing.

Also the list of the advantages of Gold gets longer every year and I wouldn't trade it for PSN in a million years.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that if you didn't have to pay for Live then there would be no pressure (or incentive if you prefer) to maintain it (kinda like PSN). I'm just sayin.

I get all that for free :D
Second this. I'm not buying any Xbox Live Gold memberships anymore in the future. Forget it.

It's Microsoft, what do you expect? Working software?

It charges less than an MMO and I would imagine that the money goes to a similar place, maintaining servers, added content, updates and everything like that. While I'm sure that some of that money does go into the pockets of some execs most of the money would go back into to the people maintaining the service. Microsoft could pay for those who are working on Live from other sources of income but the result of that would be attempts to keep it as cost effective as possible and I think that will result badly for Live. Imagine if Activision made Blizzard as cost effective as possible so that they will be able to remove the fee from WoW and encourage people who don't like online fees to join up while still just making a profit? Yuck! Of course I don't know how much goes back to the guys working on XBL, it might be very little.

PSN isn't that bad though. In my opinion (from what I've noticed) is that it isn't as good as XBL but it's free so hey, it ain't too bad. Now that they start charging fees the service could improve or they could just start making a profit with no improvement. Personally I see the PSN fee as an attemt to keep it self maintaining but only time will really tell the truth.

Sadly it appears that more and more games are being designed for consoles with PCs just getting 'sloppy seconds' with the code.

Nice find, technobuffalo doesnt waste your time with their comprehensive and accurate reviews of both systems. Though It seems alot of people are missing the point. PSN isnt free, NOTHING IS FREE. Right now the publishers are paying for the services and its costing them. Dearly.

Im once again reposting this guys post repeated for emphasis.

The idea that it costs money because "its Microsoft" is simplistic. What you are paying for is:
- The service and mantainance.
- The servers, both for MP and for content (demos, movies, etc).
- The bandwidth to download games/demos/movies.

I know its not perfect, but XBox Live is a service with a significant cost, and the consumers pay for it.

The alternative is PSN, where the users don't pay for the service... The publishers does. The cost of mantaining PSN is transfered to the producers of content, not the consumers. In other words, the publishers have to pay to put demos or videos there, and have to pay for each MB of transfer that users get from these content (the bigger the demo, the more they pay). They also pay different rates on the first weeks than the followings.

That is why many publishers care so little about the quality of the games on PSN, they prefer to create demos only for XBox live, or not at all.

You pay $50 for a fucking full year's subscription. You can't even get magazines or internet porn for that little. A game or 2 for a full year, 365 fucking days?!

Really, you're just being silly.
OK, will You pay ME $50 per year? It's not much, just hand over the money you cheapskate.

What will I give you in return? oh, i'll give you... err... I'll install a web browser on your computer... sure the browser isn't very good and there are many MANY free alternatives which are much better but how about you just forget about that and just hand over the $50 every year, kay?

I mean think about all the websites you can visit! (even though you don't have to pa my $50 to get to them you CAN et to them via paying me).
I said to never mind what I just said. I knew my argument was invalid shortly after I wrote it, hence why I put a strike through it.
