I place the blame for this squarely on Blops. I'd certainly be in the mood to kill something if I'd been forced to endure it's crappiness.....

Maybe its time to make a change......

The UK comes in at # 39 with 14

Canada has 3 times the number of firearms than the U.S....and they are not in the top ten on the above list.
South Africa and Colombia have their own issues as to why their numbers are so high.
And Thailand is overpopulated anyway.
Guns don't kill people. The idiots who use them do.
Surly that cant been true? x3 as many? I don't have any stats on gun ownership for American residences but It must be high! Excuse my ignorance but I didn't think there was as many people in Canada unless they're planning something?!?!? I think the thing with guns is they give people too much power! I know it comes down to the person to blame but really people shouldn't want or need the 2nd amendment! BUT Its a business now soooooo...

Wow I feel sorry for the guy that got shot... I'd take getting killed in a game than in real life any day.

If I had to defend videogames, I know what I'd say.

And swimming pools kill more people than guns. You want to outlaw swimming pools as well?

After reading the article I have to wonder why they don't seem to think maybe one owed a ton of cash to the other and he simply waited till the guy went back to cod and then shot him. Also why do they say "Sources reckon the game being played at the time of the murder was possibly "Call of Duty": a game which tasks players with violently shooting each other in a tense war-like situation." It either was or was not call of duty and another thing, people in this day and age tend to know what cod IS after all we all know someone or are someone who plays the game and the person is usually under the impression that being good at it makes them better people. I also noticed the use of "video game" is quite common in media, like they think all their readers will be sitting in their offices saying "Dear me, these "xbox" things must be dreadful, I shant be purchasing one for little Timmy, they are just ever so violent" Also, why the need to explain what the game is about? people either know, because they play it or don't know because they don't care, I mean seriously, no one is going to confuse CoD with bloody Scrabble. One final note, how are they ever gonna spin the old "Games R Bad" card if some guy is decapitated while playing Viva Piñata?

I sense bad things happening in the future for gaming as a medium.

Seriously though, you dont see TV or movies getting this much scrutiny.

EDIT: actually.... I'd like to see how these kinda instances would be handled with if was a military sponsered game. Like if it were an army/navy/marines game. Just to see if the people would be so quick to criticize the game when it was the armed forces saying its good and safe and informative for people of its marketed age group to play.

This has happened plenty of times before, and it's always been in the news, but it's never done any more damage to video games as a respected artistic medium than the next incident or ignorant anti-game crusader. It's tragic, and the inevitable accusations against video games will suck, but it's happened before, it'll happen again.

What I hate is how the media always happen to mention "while playing a video game." They never say "Man kills wife while eating a sandwich" or "teens go on killing spree after reading Atlas Shrugged."

*sigh* the Medium is back another ten years, easily. The video game critics are going to grab onto this and hold on for dear life

Reminds me of a quote I once heard:
"one hundred people get swine flu in mexico somewhere, millions of people wear masks, yet thousands of people every year get aids, and no one wears a condom.
That's because Aids is old news, and buying condoms is far too awkward to be effective

Right to bear arms > Freedom of media. Which in itself is ironic, since the right to bear arms was put in place to defend freedom(I assume this happened in America)

No, they would blame the guys copy of CoD at home on his desk.

Mr. Francis York Morgan,

Shot him in the back of the head
Joseph Johnson, aged 28, from Chicago, is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing a man while they played games together on an Xbox 360.

Johnson and Danny Taylor, aged 24, were allegedly playing video games at an apartment when tension escalated and they got into a fight. This led to Johnson allegedly shooting Taylor in the back of the head.

Taylor's girlfriend found the victim dead at his home on April 5th. Before entering, she saw the suspect running out of the door with a gun in his hand. She found Taylor with gunshot wounds in the back of his head: the joypad was still in his hand, and the game still running, say the police.

Sources reckon the game being played at the time of the murder was possibly "Call of Duty": a game which tasks players with violently shooting each other in a tense war-like situation.
A few words of advice.

1) The bold words:
When talking about how something is bad and evil and rots people's brains, you might want to proofread your shit first.

2) The italicized word:
When talking about how something is bad and evil and rots people's brains, you might want to do research on it first.

3) The underlines sentence:
When talking about how something is bad and evil and rots people's brains, you might want to... To... Dawww, I can't do it. It's just so cute how they think they're being smart. It's just so fuckin' adorable.

So says Mr. Stewart.

I like how no one mentions or looks at that last sentence:

"According to Chicago police, Johnson was also wanted on a North Carolina fugitive warrant."

OMG,the criminal committed a crime!!! How unexpected!

Oh no, i got that bit.
just, how many people are going to jump on the 'Games R BAD!' boat when you've associated Call Of Duty with an armed psychotic fugitive?

There's no proof that the video game was at fault. The shooter simply had unresolved anger issues that were put on display when he found he was losing. It wouldn't have been any different if they were, say, playing real sports, obvious variables such as differences in physiques and abilities excluded.

I guess it's where the games are heading. The graphics-and-coolness-over-substance way, that is... it's just attracting more of such people. The more people, the more dumb people there, too. Best part - when it comes to passing idiotic laws, they will do so on ALL that's related. Not just CoD and their fans.

EDIT: And... to OP... wtf? This is news from 2009.

It's most likely because this guy was high on meth and was really just dumb. I mean who does that kind of thing? Crazy people or people on drugs.
you forgot "your Mom"
guy in the background- ooooh you just got burned!!!

Lol jk i saw a opening and couldnt resist im sorry. any who OT: I seriously doubt the game got the shooter in the mood for killing but i do agree with "Random Fella(s)" comment here about how the guy was probably just dumb i mean theres no other reason to kill someone over a video game (unless you already planned to off the guy next Tuesday or something that is), and no matter how much we all know that games and violent people arent connected (9 out of 10 times) the "games are evil" crowd are gonna have a field day with this
