http://fraghero.com/microsoft-announces-cross-network-support-play-online-against-ps4-owners-from-your-xbox-one/

In a shocking move (if it turns out to be true) after nearly a decade and a half of competition and each generation having the two become progressively more similar (with this current generation having literally only the exclusive games both have and the originally mandatory eye toy One had) it seems that the Xbox One and PS4 are braking down the wall between players and will be allowing for cross platform gaming between players using the same game on different consoles.

This is both brilliant and stupid at the same time. On the one hand this increases the playerbase for games that are on both consoles (and lord knows Evolve needs that), but on the other hand this means there's even less reason to specifically get one of the two consoles then there was before (though I've long been of the opinion the WiiU is the only current gen console worth owning if you have a functional computer).

This, if it's true, would start with Rocket League, which already has PS4/PC cross platforming, but it that does happen and succeeds it spreading to other games is inevitable.

I'm not really certain how to feel about this. I can only imagine that the Windows 10/Xbox integration has spurred cross-network play to become an idea more fully considered, but this makes we wonder if Xbox will start giving some leniency toward free to play games. Sony already lets you play them on PS4 without a subscription.

I think this is much needed. Particularly in the long term when online communities are vastly reduced in numbers. Making it difficult to get a full game. And perhaps keeping online activity high overall can extend how long the servers for a game will be up.

Then there's the problem of playing with friends on different systems, and how cost prohibitive it is to buy two of the same game. Particularly at launch when online communities are at their peak. I have to say too, that it would be silly to be asking people which system they're playing on to start a fuss over. And I would be happy for Rocket League to feature a larger matchmaking community.

people wouldn't need to play on different systems because there would literally be no point in having different systems if everything is cross play

I would assume there would still be console exclusives to promote having both systems. However if this does actually happen, exclusives are going to have to start being fucking AMAZING, or nobody will give a shit beyond buying the one console they want.

Bloodborne level of awesome, for example.

The cross-play on PS4/PC is pretty limited anyway. You can only play with random people with cross play. There's no way to make a party with your PS4 friend if you play on PC. The only way to do that successfully is if you make a private game and then give your friend the information to join the lobby.

It's nice though. The player count is always constantly about 80,000 when I play online. I don't think I've run into the same player even once in my 50 hours of playing, which makes things more interesting.

I'm failing to see why this would hurt people getting different consoles though? This would obviously be for multiplatform games anyway, right? And only for the multiplayer components. How would allowing someone from the Xbox and someone from the PS play a game online together negatively impact either Sony or Microsoft anymore than having multiplatform games in the first place?

Well then its up to the console manufacturers to offer good services, exclusives, and competitive prices. And this would only work with multi-platform games.

But truth be told, I would imagine it would be more work to get two completely different systems to be playable online. So idk if some developers, particularity smaller ones. Will put in the work and money for cross platforming gaming.

I bet they will hide this feature behind their most top tiered subscription plan.

As a side not, I am already laughing at the incidents of some games being filled with Microsoft and Sony fanboys just screaming at each other.

I am almost entirely positive that subscription plans cant determine who you play with.
If you are a member of the PC Master Race, then no. But they will find a way to pay-gate cross platform between the two consoles.

Do you really think these corporations would waste the money on two sets of servers instead of one, and the code that determines what you can join based on your sub level?
If the profit potential is higher, yes.

Would love for this to happen. Most of my friends last gen were on 360. I don't have a lot of online friends on PSN, but I am mostly buying my games on PS4 this gen.

But if they try to charge extra for it like some others have mentioned, I am really not interested. Paying for Gold and Plus should be enough.

Somebody could make a lot of money with this if they made a Free-to-Play (supported by cosmetic item purchases and boosters) version of Console War: The Game, in which the side/faction you play as is dictated by which platform you use and therefore, it will always be a Co-Op game with people on your own platform, but the enemy will always be The Enemy from the rival platform.

This is good news for those who love multiplayer games. I disagree with you on the PC bit. Even if I had a high-end, rigged up, PC I'd still invest in the PS4 and Wii U. There are just niche Japanese games that Sony has that rarely ever gets a PC port. This is changing a little bit with some companies, but the Japanese still have a long way to go when it comes to making excellent PC ports of console games or developing them side-by-side.

To be fair, owning a $1,000+ Gaming PC is not worth it if you own a functional console.

A 500$ computer will give you more bang for your buck then a 500$ console though. Which is half the reason the WiiU is the only console worth owning if you have a PC. The other half being exclusives.

But then how would I play Bloodborne?
