as much as people like to lay the hate on Sony, they really aren't pulling a bad move this time. it seems that the newest update to the Xbox 360 will kill all unauthorized storage devices, this means anything not sold by m$ themselves. so you'll have to go buy one of the devices licensed by m$ in order to back up your data, if not you're SOL

this means any USB key or storage medium, not just hard drives

here's a link to the article about it
http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2009/10/16/unauthorized-xbox-360-storage-devices.aspx

EDIT: i changed the title of the topic because no one was reading what i actually typed and i clarified it a bit more

I'm one step ahead of them, I don't have a hard drive at all.
Take THAT Microsoft.

Well, not really surprising here. Microsoft loves their money, and this a way to get more money. It is a shame though, and a dick move.

I didn't even know they existed. Sure, maybe memory cards... but hard drives?

actually it's any storage medium that is not licensed by them, that means memory cards and usb keys and anything you can story your xbox data on

Well, that seems a little over-the-top. Though I don't know why people bother with the third party ones. I've had my 360 for over 3 years and played at least 2 dozen games, and I STILL haven't had to delete anything off of the hard drive. I don't think I'm even remotely close to the maximum memory capacity (and I don't even have the bigger one).

Not everyone has the same usage habits as you do?

I suppose I wouldn't care so much if the HDDs microsoft offers for the 360 wern't a complete rip off.
$170 (AU) for a 120gig HDD? Yeah right.

I got mine for £15 off of Ebay, and all but the arcade 360 model comes with a hard drive anyway.

I don't see the problem. So a company doesn't want people to buy third party devices. Big whoop. It's not like they don't work under the laws of capitalism or something.

Of course, I have a distrust of third party hardware and, thus, this update will not effect me in the slightest.

Too many broken PS2 controllers as a kid, you see.

Honestly, if you're going to complain about it, ditch the 360 and get whatever game system your little heart desires.

Then complain about that. :3

Yeah I have a woefully inadequate 20 gig HDD at the moment.
With all of the Fallout 3, Saints Row 2, Oblivion, GTAIV and Fable 2 expansions I have this puts me in the "buy and new freaking hdd" corner.
I have about 50mb left right now haha.

Well if you bought an Arcade it would make sense to use an external drive to store your saves and music etc. It's much cheaper than buying one of those crap drives Microsoft sells relative to the price per gigabyte. These should all be fucked so Microsoft can literally rip consumers off with their over priced accessories?

Wow, that sucks. I'd be really annoyed as USB through the xbox is my main medium for watching tv at the moment (Australian tv will get better someday, honest), though I do have a shiny new ps3 that has nothing against my sony USB (and presumably no problem with the various other ones, the branded one is the largest though). Along with region restrictions this kind of thing heavily supports the 'flash my xboxs firmware' argument (especially as xbox live is shit beyond use).

All the article says is that they're killing "unauthorized" units. As in, shit that's been modded.

I don't see how that equates to "3rd party units", which are an entirely different matter.

(Strangely, the only XBL user in the first two pages who noticed this was named procrastubator.)
