I'm a massive fan of X-Com and TFTD; to the point of rebuilding a battered old windows 98 PC just so I could run them.

I suppose I could see X-Com working as a FPS if it retained the strategic element - i.e. the Geoscape, research, base management and constructing new equipment.

I think playing as a soldier on the ground in the tactical missions would be pretty cool, but I'd want to still be able to order my squad around. Oh and they'd have to generate the scenery randomly or you'd get bored fast playing through the same levels over and over, plus you'd lose the element of the unknown that you got with the old X-Com games when you never new the layout of a map before you explored it.

Obviously the game isn't anywhere near finished but I don't think an enemy made of black oil is particularly iconic - I want to fight sectoids damnit. And no, it doesnt help that the other enemy in the trailer seems to be a collection of shapes from a kid's play set.. What next? A battle to save the earth from the works of Picasso?

That said, if the developers can make this game well then it'll sell well. Gamers are pretty quick to throw the toys out of the crib when a developer announces they'll be working on a sequel to a much-loved game from the past but just because they're changing the format doesn't mean it'll be a total disaster. I loved Fallout 1 & 2, and I love Fallout 3 even though it's a radical departure from form it's still a good game. Likewise, I love System Shock 2 and I love Bioshock though SS2 is still the better game I reckon.

We can complain about developers making changes to games we love when they do sequels or remakes but what's the alternative? Endlessly churn out EXACTLY the same game every year but give the characters different names or some equally minor adjustment? Congratulations; you've imaged FIFA or Madden or any of those insipid Football Manager games that play exactly like a spreadsheet.

In summary, I'll probably buy this game if they can make it at least marginally tolerable. But I think I'd just prefer a copy of the original X-Com and TFTD that would run on my Windows 7 PC really.
