If you're okay with outdated (extremely so) graphics and UI, and if you enjoyed Tactics I'd said that you are... Then yes, definitely.

In my personal opinion it is well worth it, however it does depend on you a little, what game types do you enjoy the most? your example of fallout tactics isn't close enough to x-com to really be able to tell if you'd like it.

My suggestion is to go check out the gameplay footage on youtube, it is the type of game that will basicaly kick you in the balls if you aren't ready for it.

It's an old game. That's my warning. It's a very old game. Some of the interface peculiarities have not improved with age.

That said, it's quite arguably the best tactical strategy game of all time.

The graphics haven't aged well at all but I find that very easy to overlook in the case of X-Com. It's a fantastic blend of strategy and tactics - I used to be so dismayed when a squad member died, and it's so easy to lose men so I found myself experimenting and developing with tactics that would keep my men alive.

And it's not like a lot of modern strategy games where if you replay the game, all the maps and levels are the same. Nowadays, you don't usually need tactics as much as you need to learn how to exploit each level in turn. In x-com you needed flexible tactics because each tactical map is randomly generated.

So yeah, worth a purchase but the graphics might cause you some pause.

I very much recommend it. I also recommend reading the manual, without it you're not really going to know what's going on :p

Lord, no...it's not as bad as Dwarf Fortress. Just the tutorials for Dwarf Fortress make me want to weep.

If it doesn't, you can get a copy of the original manual here:

It is an amazing game, and I spent a good chunk of my teen years playing both UFO Defense and Terror From the Deep. You should really strive to pass the graphics barrier and enjoy this amazing game, even if only for sentimental reasons.

The game is a classic, and you will be able to see just how many games it influenced.

Yeah. Not enough.

We're...what...20 years gone on now? And we've had exactly one other notable game with destructible terrain, and it was a 3rd person shooter.

One other notable tactical turn based shooter, and it was almost a decade ago now, and the upcoming "sequels" are a RTS and a MMORTS respectively.

And then we have 2K telling us that strategy games "aren't contemporary".

PFAH!

Buy it, download XCOM UTIL, and then enjoy. The X-Com Util mod makes the game ifinitely more playable, fixes bugs, and improves the interface greatly. Also, if you really want to enjoy it, on your first playthrough, dont look at any guides or strategy tips. Having to figure out what all the alien tech does and how it works adds a lot of atmosphere to the game, and makes it a lot more challenging.

That being said, X-com hates all of its players. Look up some vids of people playing it, and you'll understand why. If you hate games babying you and handing you wins, then you'll love xcom, because it makes you work for every single victory. You start out completely outnumbered, outgunned, and outpositioned. The alien ships can outrun yours with ease, their weapons are much more accurate and powerful, and some can even mind control your troops (not that this is much of a big deal, since almost none of your troops can hit the broad side of a barn on a good day) I've seen videos where in the first mission, guys will lose over half their troops, only to have the rest panic and turn on each other.

But, as you capture alien tech, learn their strategies and weaknesses, and begin to reverse engineer their weapons into much better and upgraded equipment, you can turn the tide. Nothing is more satisfying than the first time you have a full ship full of flying armor troops with Heavy Plasmas, you start mopping the floor with the aliens, and watch them panic and start to turn on each other.

Also, DO NOT GO NEAR CHRYSALLIDS! DONT TOUCH THEM, DONT GO NEAR THEM, DONT EVEN LOOK AT THEM. IF YOU SEE THEM NUKE THE SITE FROM ORBIT AND RUN LIKE HELL!!! You have been warned. You'll know them when you see them, because the moment you land at the terror site, the first three turns will be filled with screams, and then there will only be silence.

It's a great game. And I dont think age has any say in it. I hate when people think they can judge a game by it's age. It's a very retro simulation type game. Hard to learn, harder to master. You will get frustrated. But it's fucking awesome.

Yes,BUT go onto the steam forum and get the patch from there(should be top thread or so), makes the game run a lot faster and you don't have to faff around with equipping your characters each mission.

Yeah, sadly the influence stuck more with players than with developers.

But, quite frankly, as I get older I turn more and more towards classic, 'outdated' games. The challenge level is so much more intense. My pet project now is finishing Fantasy General. So hard it makes Baby Jesus cry, just the way I like it =)
