Yahtzee said in his most recent review of Darksiders that 2010 will be he age that cloning technology is finally perfected though not everyone is gonna like this and the Religious Fanatics might have a field day but FORWARD WITH SCIENCE!

But here comes the real question, Isn't God Of War just a shiny clone of Devil May Cry?

Of course that's as far back as I can trace Soul gathering, crazy melee fighting, demons and god killing fanatics with really big swords.

What would you guys say is the "Original" God of War?

Probably some like 25 year old arcade game that was super awesome but never made it out of the arcade era.

It goes:

Resident Evil
Onimusha
Devil May Cry
God of War

Copy and Pasting God of War a million times.

those games are all derivative of the game above it, but the formula hasn't really changed since God of War.. The introduction of QTE kills, and massive amounts of blood, gore, and titties.

That's why they're "God of War" Clones.

Hell if I know. I'm at least glad he later said "It only slightly rips off God of War." Can't stand it when people call every game in which you hit someone with a sword a God of War clone.

While they do all take from each other to create a nice working Idea +Tits, what I'm asking for is what game can be traced back with the basic idea of GoW?

The Jenova to Sephiroth.

these types of games can go back all the way to the 80s, they are ALL clones or ripoffs of something

Devil May Cry popularised what's now known as the "Extreme Action" genre (look it up). And all that was is basically a 3D beat-em-up, a la Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Golden Axe, etc. And these go back to Castlevania and beyond. This tree goes much further than you may think.

One of these things is definitely not like the others.

It's not just the hack and slash though. It's elements of the story too and who you fight that are copied as well.

God of War is, at it's heart, nothing more than a brawler with a bit more depth and polish. As such, if you follow the Brawler lineage back far enough you find the most like candidate probably occupied a space in the arcade. Games like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon are excellent examples but I would bet a fair amount of money that neither represents the first example of a brawler. Of course, in the era of Double Dragon there were a thousand games that were almost literal clones, in much the same way that any arcade worth it's salt housed a half dozen games that played exactly like Midway's classic 1944.

When people complain about copying these days it seems almost quaint in comparison. Even the art assets never looked all that different, and in an arcade that housed a hundred machines you only had about a half-dozen unique games.

No, it's when combo-killing everything on-screen with a sword/axe/mace etc. is the major gameplay mechanic.

Well, when you think of it that way, God of War is pretty much a clone of any other game with a similar style of action oriented gameplay. For example: you could say that God of War (made in 2005) was a rip off of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (made in 2003), just without those tiny platforming sections.

How so? Onimusha was Resident Evil with swords, Devil May Cry was Onimusha but not shit and God of War was Devil May Cry with QTEs. Everything fits.

Oh right, how silly of me. I totally forgot about those parts in God of War and Devil May Cry where I slowly solve tons of puzzles by moving object X to slot Y.

Speaking of which, you know what was really fun? Hacking and slashing my way through zombies on Resident Evil, collecting their souls and using them to buy upgrades for my swords. That was fucking awesome.

I think the main point of this thread is that people like to compare things to other things. And if those people like the original things (GoW) more than the new things (DS), then people will try to point out every little percieved shortcoming or whatever to make the original things (GoW) god like, and the new things (DS) crap by comparison. And also evil.

Yay slippery-slope logic!

I know right, and the parts where you juggle the zombies in the air with your guns was so badass, none of that creepy atmosphere or searching for clues and items.

Except that the point of P o' P was jumping around roof tops, avoiding traps, failing at said tasks, rewinding... the major gameplay element isn't combat.

I'd say the "original" God of War was this neat game called "God of War". Did you know there wasn't a single game called "God of War" before this "God of War" game came out?

It actually went through my head while watching this video that God of War was kind of a clone of Devil May Cry. It's nice to see I'm not the only one.

Well, by that mentality you could say that all FPS games are halo clones. You can kind of see the reasoning behind it, and some games might very indiscreetly rip off halo, but to call them all clones is a bit much.

I would say god of war and DMC are the two basic molds for your two different types of quintessential beat em ups. While they may have shared some common roots, I think they're different enough to be accounted for differently

In god of war games all of your face buttons aside from jump are physical attacks. Fast attack, strong attack, grab, and if you have projectiles they're usually very useful, very limited, and have to do with the shoulder buttons or d pad. Usually these have a lot of fancy grab kills and such that you're supposed to utilize to very heavy extent.

DMC type beat em ups make you rely 50% on melee combos, and 50% on pissweak projectiles that you get infinity of and can fire off like crazy. There's generally no "throw" button and no block button, but usually you're a lot more mobile in these games, so combat focuses more on jumping around and keeping a constant stream of pain coming than it does blocking and breaking.

I've found most beat em up games fall into these categories. Not to say that they're all clones, but anyone who looks at a game like Dante's Inferno and doesn't immediately think "god of war" should probably stop lying to themselves.
