I've never shaved my pubes, (probably never will, that shit just seems weird to me), but if judging from how it itched when I trimmed them then I don't want to imagine how it would be like if you got rid of them all.[end of potentially disgusting part]

The two are very similar but one is incapable of living in the opposite region. Public lice (crabs) are built for hiding among, moving among and surviving in the coarse and wiry hair found in their home region while head lice favor denser finer hair. It is theorizied that one can chart important moments in human evolution by how much these two species diverge. If one goes with the standard theory on the subject, at one point we had hair across our entire bodies and thus only one species of lice would be necessary. Since most do not have a continuous tract of hair from head to groin, presumably they species began diverging when they were separated by expanses of flesh that they simply were incapable of crossing.

Another interesting note: human lice apparently are so well adapted to humans that they don't really live on anything else.
