According to rumour (or maybe I missed something a bit more obvious than mere rumour), Yahtzee has received a copy of FFXIII recently and a review should be forthcoming in the not-too-distant future. My question is... why?

I mean, sure, it's undoubtably one of the biggest releases of the year and Yahtzee almost always puts in his two cents on the latest big games, but in this case I can't help the feeling that it's going to be more than a little redundant. I can't claim to read Yahtzee's mind (if I did it would probably cause him to hunt me down and kill me out of sheer paranoia) but I think I can safely predict what his opinion of it will be in advance (spoilered to protect the naive):
HE'S GOING TO ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HATE IT.

I mean, this is probably going to be the most predictable review he's ever done. We all KNOW for a fact that Yahtzee will not give any JRPG a fair go because of personal bias (he seemed ambivalent about The World Ends With You, but only because it was so much unlike most JRPGs and he DID hate the parts that WERE like other JRPGs). Fair enough, it's part of his schtick. But FFXIII is controversial and divisive even by the standards of the medium. He will absolutely without doubt rag on the game for (in terms he would use):

*Having a story that is simultaneously impenetrably dense and confusing yet simultaneously boring and stupid, told through interminable cutscenes that will make him want to shoot himself.
*Having a highly unlikeable cast of utter twats dressed like they sprinted through a Japanese boutique while it was being bombed by terrorists (with stupid hair and annoying voices) who he'll want to murder by the end of the first hour. Including a black dude with an afro who he will portray talking about fried chicken.
*Being horribly, repetatively linear- not that being linear is inherently a bad thing, as he has pointed out before, but in this case it will be compounded by being utterly boring.
*Having a combat system that is somehow both overly complicated and fiddly and yet dumbed down and automated. And turn based, which sucks, even if it isn't really.
*Oh, but the graphics will be pretty alright, though.

Those aren't my opinions of the game, they're just my predictions of how Yahtzee will report it. I'm pretty sure I'm not too far off the mark. And while I look forwards to enjoying Yahtzee's peerless mastery of metaphor, razor-sharp snark and hilarious animations, I just can't help the feeling that there's not going to be any surprises in this one.

Unless, athat is, he attempts to do what he claimed he was doing in his review of 'Alone in the Dark' and makes it a self-imposed challenge to go into the review actually doing his damndest to actually enjoy the game despite its flaws. He would, of course, fail, but at least it would be less predictable.

By the way, before you say anything NO I am NOT pre-emptively bagging Yahtzee for not liking the game. I don't like FFXIII myself much from what I've seen of and heard about it. I just seriously think that this review is going to need something a bit special to make it interesting, because we really do just KNOW what he's going to say in advance, and I do so love Zero Punctuation.

I think the fun of his reviews is nto what he critiques games on since thats usually easy to figure out if you played the game he's reviewing and have watched many of his videios. The fun for me comes from how he says what he says. His colorful language, silly jokes, childish animation, and creating new words and phrases are what its all about for me.

Thus, I could care less what game he reviews. For a seriously helpful review, look elsewhere.

Often you can tell what the result of a game will be on ZP, its not the result that matters, its how good he presents the show and how many laughs it can give, while providing information about the game thats being reviewed.

According to a rumour I heard, Yahtzee recently recieved copies of Halflife 2: Episode 3, Starcraft: Ghost and Zone of the Enders 3.

Reviews are forthcoming.

I asked myself the same question. I've actually played the game and it's not really that bad, and the graphics are absolutely beautiful and the level system is quite intuitive, while the combat is totally different from most games. It's probably one of the best Final Fantasy games to date.

You want to know why??

IT BODILY RIPS EVERYTHING OF FROM A GAME THAT'S ALREADY DONE IT BETTER!!!

But I digress. Yahtzee will hate it, but I guess it's all about the presentation, I suppose. Like people inexplicably like Avatar, even though the story was utterly predictable and we've all seen it before, it was presented well enough people could get over that for... some reason.

Guarantee The Escapist said he had to because they know it'll get publicity...that or he heard that FFFans hate it and so if the reception is from bizarro-world maybe the game will be too

Also he won't talk about fried chicken...it'd be the black guy who eats fried chocobo through his hair

For JRPG fanboys this has to be thier worst nightmare. This is probably the worse game for a JRPG hater to play as it epitomizes all the things most dont like about the genre. I actually sold mine about 15 hours in when I realized it would take 15 more before I could actually play the game like I would like.

Per his twitter its happening already

My brother reached the non-linear section in 19 hours.

30 hours? Yeah, maybe if you sat on your arse and did nothing at all.

It combines the linear runninng about aspect/sphere grid style of FFX with the mark-hunting/teleporting/component stuffs (albeit in a slightly different manner) of FFXII.

Not that that's a bad thing, I quite enjoy it. "Rip bodily" has negative connotations. Apparently every game has to be drastically different to each other to not be a copy.

Oops, better get on Halflife 2's case for 'bodily ripping' the whole suit/health thing from Halflife 1!

I don't want to make a post that takes up three or four pages, so I'll just use the combat as an example. I'm serious, the combat is near identical to Persona 4. Not to mention most of the characters have already been done and done better in previous Final Fantasy games.
This differs because, just from what I've seen, these characters have no defining features whatsoever.
Hope=Tidus, Lightning=Cloud, Vanille=Selphie/Rikku, Snow=Seifer etc.
As opposed to previous games, where they borrow heavily from their previous titles, but they give them some sort of defining characteristic.
Take Squall for example. He's similar to Cloud in almost every way, right down to the meteorological name, but his character evolves completely differently and his design is completely different. If you do a side-by-side of Tidus and Hope, they look almost identical.
Wow, sorry, I rambled there. ^_^

I hope he doesn't review it; It'll be like repeating everything I'd already come to conclude when it was first announced:
It's going to suck. Though he may very well say it in a much funnier manner.

Mind you, I absolutely love Final Fantasy, and am coincidentally listening to the IX Soundtrack as I write this. But Final Fantasy hasn't been good since X. And no amount of graphical increase can change that.

(The above is not counting Crisis Core and Dissidia, both of which stood on their own as really good games.)

Sorry may I intervene and say Hope looks and acts nothing like Tidus, at all, Lightning is based on Cloud because the fanboys wouldn't shut up and she has way better character development, Vanille's only thing in common with Rikku is the bubbliness (Selphie is entirely different) and whatever game you've been playing but Snow = Seifer? Errrrr nonononono, that's probably the silliest thing I've heard today.

Since we have only been in 2010 for 3/12 months so far this may not be true. IGN.com only gave it an 8.15/10 overall (combining both PS3 + XBOX360 scores).

Believe it or not some of his reviews were about games he liked, he's just a cynic so even if he's praising something he still sees the bad and makes it sound like he hates it. Just look at the Silent Hill 2 review.

Best reviewed and biggest are different. Its definately one of the biggest of the year.

to an earlier post

I was on chaptr 6 at 14 hours. I did a few hours of grinding. Still even 20 hours is too long to wait for a game to open up. its ridiculous. I hope yatzi reams it

I thought most of us watched Zero Punctuation to see Yahtzee rant. Therefore, FFXIII should be a goldmine of such ranting. Everyone can see the issues in a lot of games, but hearing them insulted so creatively is the main, if not only, reason I watch ZP. I mean, look at the Wolfenstein review done in limerick; who else would and could do that so well and construct a reasonably informative review out of it? His opinions are more guidelines of hatred peppered with fun little anecdotes and quotes to me.

Question is: what do you look for in ZP that will be lost in the rumoured review which you mention?

Oh look at that, you did Yahtzee's review for him! Now he'll just take the week off!

A JRPG fanboy's worst nightmare is to have people play and talk about JRPGs? What?
