I remember at the midnight showing of a Harry Potter movie, the thing started playing without the audio.
SO, the audience obviously did the only rational thing: provided the voices themselves. One of the most hilarious Harry Potter films I had ever seen until they restarted it with the audio back on.

As for myself, The only time I said something was once when I saw that movie Splice. If you don't know the movie, think Frankenstein with genetic engineering. So anyway there's this scene when the main scientist character (Adrien Brody) is fucking some female mutant that him and his wife created, and right when the boning gets good and proper, The dude's wife walks in on them.
There was a shot to the scientist's deer-startled eyes, so I said in a curious voice, "Three-way?".
despite the whole movie being pretty good and atmospheric and creepy, the whole audience burst out laughing during that one, solitary scene.

Yeah, I mean, the theater isn't Unskippable. Granted, that sort of thing would be hilarious but not when you're paying out of pocket for tickets and food to sit through the actual audio.
I mean, no one would shout out commentary during a Shakespeare play--unless they're total dickheads. I'm not saying both forms of theater are the same quality but they still deserve the same amount of respect. Art is art--more so when you're paying for it. If you really can't defeat the urge, wait a few months for the DVD release.

I don't think people should do it. However I've never heard anyone shout any tthing in a movie before. I don't think it happens much in the UK. There was one time when a joke just went straight over the audiences head. It was the hangover part 2 when they're talking to the ladyboy and she said "I had to slow down so I didn?t drop my load too quick." No one got the joke except me and some guy in the top left of the theater. I was sat there laughing my arse off.
From what i've seen in movies i've gotten the imprecion that cinema-culture is different from where i live to other countries.
In Denmark, you basicly sit down, shut the fuck up and enjoy the movie. You dont' talk, you keep your phone turned off, not on silent setting, but off, so the light from your display won't get in the face of people behind you.
ofc people laugh when something is funny, peopel scream when they get scared, etc. but peopel who feel a need to comment on the movies inside the theater are usually looked upon as annoying pricksof attention-whores, who can't stand not beeing the center of attention for a mere 2 hours.
Most people won't mind if you whisper silently to your friend, or make out with your partner unless you're beeing loud, but talking, and especially trying to adress the entire audience is frowned upon, and don't get suprized if get shit thrown in your neck by the people behind you.
This is only in cinemas, if you're at home or with friends watching a movie in TV or on DVD, usually anything goes.

Not in the theatre, but I think it's fine if everyone knows the movie and you know it's a bad film. The only time I make remarks at a theater is if something seriously pisses me off. For example, I yelled "Bullshit!!" at Gandalf the White getting his ass kicked by the Witch King in the Return of the King Special Edition. I almost walked out.
Only if the movie is really bad, as in, nobody in their right mind would see it except in a "so bad it's good" way. Even then, only every once in a while; no matter how funny you think it is, it'll get old pretty fast for everyone else if you're shouting out every 30 seconds.
