Honestly, while it gets annoying to hear it used agian, and AGIAN by the type of people who think Drake invented the saying...

I've never had a problem with it. "You Only Live Once" has been a saying for a LONG time, just not in the form of an acronym

I disagree, because "Leeroy Jenkins" is used more or less like a battle cry. YOLO is sometimes used as a battle cry, but it's more often used...

No. No no no no no no no no no no nonononononononon NO.

Leeroy Jenkins is a godly war cry to be roared in moments of solitary heroism.

YOLO is a trashy, disposable piece of nothing that will be remembered along side SWAG and Adolf Hitler as some of the worst things mankind has ever produced.
Oh wait, seems my statement has been covered, lol. And much better put than I ever could have put it.

Yolo is something you yell before you do something that will give you an std.
That's pretty accurate. Whereas Leeroy is likely to be screamed before you kick a door down and rescue a litter of kittens from a burning building.

I was thinking about this the other day. I've been playing video games since the NES days, so I've pretty much been around since the dawn of contemporary "video game culture". During this time we've witnessed the rapid evolution of video game slang and jargon. Whether it's using pre-existing words improperly or employing completely new words/phrases, this hobby-specific jargon has made it's way through different facets of our culture. It's fascinating really.

I play a lot of RPGs and used to play a lot of MMOs. During that time I used the word "proc" a lot, and still do. Curious, I looked up it's actual meaning and origin the other day. Turns out I had a perfect understanding of it's meaning, but it apparently doesn't have a clear origin. No one is quite sure where it comes from, though there are plenty of theories.

So what the hell does the thread title mean? Well, while the concept of video game jargon is interesting I actually wanted to make this thread to discuss what words/phrases you often use while playing games. Me and a friend of mine have gotten into the nasty habit of yelling, "YOLOOOO!" when we're doing something reckless in a multiplayer game. It's gotten to the point where we're even doing it out-of-character during D&D encounters.

So yeah, I think I've crafted a rather confused OP but I am confident you guys can find something to talk about here.

Fuck, I'm tired today >.>
Im sorry, but what the fuck is "Yolo" and what importance does it have?

I'm not surprised Rachael Alucard is too refined to know what "YOLO" is.

I just like the term because of it's use in Achievement Hunters, I hear it's also said by stupid people but you'd have to listen to stupid people to actually know this.
This is the same reason why my friends and I started saying YOLO when doing stupid things in video games or D&D.
It's fun to say in a completely apathetic voice.

But not too refined to drop the fuck word. I feel she would have used a far more scathing word followed by an insult.

Only to get mauled by the kittens because you underestimated their power.

I personally think it's stupid. If I'm going to yell something before charging into something stupid I'm going to yell something a little more classic like "Bonzai!"

meh, another one of those internet things that bled out into real life. Can you believe some people actually say "lol" and "rofl" out loud now? They were made to show emotion through text, not to replace actual emotion in speech!

The only thing i've ever said thats similar is the occasional "happy face" and "sad face" when talking with the bro. A kind-of in-joke between us since we both watched arby n the chief from before it even had arby :)

<spoiler=This is becoming my feelings on YOLO more and more><youtube=TOlKHoNL4ks>

So much so when I hear someone say it in a serious manner I just take 10 IQ points away from them. I know thats petty, but everyone is on some level (unless the dalai lama is posting here). Even worse when I see someone like the girl I saw tuesday who had the phrase tattooed to her damn foot like its something to be proud of.

Though when I give charge, its usually after the phrase "Knights of the White to me, let us march up Jericho Hill!" or another old classic "for the abbey!"

... so I guess I'm not much better. though YOLO has replaced carpe diem more than it has leroy jenkins.

YOLO: 'I know this is retarded thing to do and I'm going to die doing it, but I just don't give a sh#t!'
(player then charges in and dies due to its stupidity, rest of team groans and struggles on).

LEEEEROY JENKIIIINS: I have some idea what's happening/things aren't looking good, time to give a rousing battle-cry and CHARRRGE!
(morale boost drives the jenkins and a couple of others into the thick of it, low chance of sucess but much higher than the YOLO moron player).

Leroy Jenkins has it's charm. YOLO on the other hand doesn't. Just stupid meme garbage. Why is it when some new lingo comes along or a joke; the internet feels the need to run that shit into the ground within the first two weeks? I feel like we're stagnating our own cultural growth by doing this shit.

I've always hated the phrase "YOLO", ever since I heard my idiotic brother yelling it out. Just seems like a dumb man's version of carpe diem.

Ask yourself, what would strike you as more badass, yelling "Carpe Diem!!" as you charge headlong into your enemies, or "YOLO!!"

"Injustice: Gods Among Us" in-joke aside... maybe I just don't "get out" enough, but the only time I ever year the term "Yolo" used ever is specifically in the context of complaining about or making fun of the term. Just saying, I have yet to ever see the term played straight.
