A young kid (4-5 years) walks into the store. He looks homeless and poor. You´re really on the fence with your boss. One more infraction and you´ll get fired. It´s an infraction to give customers free food, obviously. It´s also an infraction to leave your post FOR ANY REASON. The kid goes forward to you and orders a happy meal.

You ready the meal, but when you give it to him, he doesn´t pay. You take it out of his hands and he begins sobbing quietly. Do you give him the happy meal or not?

I'd probably pay for it myself, as long as that wasn't considered an infraction as well. I don't really know the rules about that at fast-food restaurants, as I've never worked at one myself.

I'd take it back, but I'd tell him to stay until my lunch break. When I get to eat, I'd give him my lunch instead.

I don't think giving the kid McDonalds is doing him any favors. I wouldn't eat that shit even if it was free.

You know what I really hate? I really hate when people think it's clever to replace "s" with "$" to denote a "greedy, evil corporation."

I really, really hate that.

But to answer your question, I'd pay for it myself. Money is going into the register. If my boss gets pissed at me for that, then I'd quit before he'd fire me. I'm not going to work for an asshole like that.

I pay for the meal, sit him down at a table and proceed to call the local police station. After that hopefully they will have a better life. This way he can get the meal and if he really does have parents they will go to jail. Cynicism and philanthropy complete.

I'd call over a manager and see if we could work something out or call the proper authorities to deal with it. If he/she refuses to cooperate or is too busy, I'd scribble the directions to the nearest soup kitchen on some receipt paper and give it to the child. If the kid can't read it, chances are he/she may have a parent or other guardian that can.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't pay for it yourself. Even the most cruel manager in the world would let you give it to him and pay on your break. This type of thing actually does happen in restaurants occasionally and I have NEVER seen someone get turned away without us finding at least some kind of scraps to throw a sandwich together with. People generally don't go into food because they hate feeding people.

Also - any restaurant that doesn't budget at least five percent of food cost as waste is asking to lose money. There is no way that McDonalds doesn't have a waste budget.

Besides, if the kid ordered and has the damn thing in his hand already, if he doesn't actually take it, doesn't it just get thrown away anyhow? I mean, once a food item has been given to a customer, you can't take it back and give it to another customer. There are strict regulations on the sale of restaurant food. It's like that in Toronto, is it different elsewhere?

I'd shit in the box and set it on fire before taking off my shirt and squeezing through the drive through window into someone's car. Off into the sunset! EXCELSIOR!

don't give him the happy meal. Doesn't affect me whether he eats or not, but it's not beneficial for me to give food to him. So no.

I would give him the happy meal and ready my letter of resignation. I can find another job,but that child probably hasn't eaten in days.

Probably pay for it myself, or give a sad-sounding apology and brood about it for the rest of the day. I'm not sure which.
