Although I hate to bring religion into threads, it is the best example I can think of off the top of my head to counter this. Some people believe that to a follower of a religion you simply have to follow the beliefs, where other people believe you have to physically go to church.

Religion is a lot more complex than gaming though, it can be viewed in so many different ways and is a much more serious thing. Where as gaming is very simple with a solid definition. So I dont really think they can be compared.

I agree though that we should keep the thread as a fun thread. So:

MMO's.... Like I said if it's the only game you play you can't be a gamer... I just think they are time sinks. Sure they have the elements of the game but grinding isn't a game...

While grinding hardly qualifies as a game, damn if I don't still enjoy The Sims 2 regardless...

Anyway, try this...You're not a real gamer if you've never played Madden, Civilization, and Katamari Damacy on the same day.

You're not a gamer if... you decide that you can apply arbitrary labels to people, turning them off from the notion of gaming in the first place. If you play Half Life, you are a gamer, if you play Peggle, you are a gamer. It all supports the industry.

I mean I think the only way you can not be a gamer is to not play games.
Now the way you go not be a hard-core gamer is you have to have a list of favorite games including Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Sing star.
