Part of me wants to be crass and say something that used to be considered wildlife a century ago... but that would be racist (the Australian kind).

If you mean Indigenous Australians, that's not actually true. They weren't counted in the census, and many felt it was as if they were considered wildlife, but that wasn't really an official position held by the government. OTOH, Australian coins feature wildlife, except for the one with an Aboriginal man on it.
