I think that there are certain animals that have the capacity to create emotional bonds and I feel if an animal can create that kind of bond that you shouldn't kill or eat it (like dogs and cats). However, animals like cows who can NOT create an emotional bond are animals that I feel no guilt in eating.

The extreme to which they took that argument was idiotic. However, I would be lying if I said that it has never pissed me off how some people can gorge themselves silly on meat without a care in the world, but will recoil in disgust if they're ever told to do so much as pluck a chicken. I mean really, how hypocritical can you get? You want to be an omnivore? Be an omnivore. But don't then act like the farmer who has to cut Miss Piggy's throat in order to put yet another bacon roll in front of you is some kind of brute.
I would say that although I eat meat I would never be the one to kill the animal however I don't think the person who does it is a monster its just not in my own personal tastes to want to know how my meat goes from animal to food.

On topic though I completely agree that you can love animals and still eat meat.

If you are a vegetarian, you can't like carnivores and omnivores. I bet that's what they meant.

Wow, this is still ongoing. Seriously. There is nothing wrong with eating meat, we are omnivores. If someone chooses not to, that's fine, but to claim any kind of moral highground/halo for that food choice is extremely childish. Grow up outspoken vegetarians, your having been born floating in a pool of privilege is showing.

Love, to me anyway, is an emotional and psychological bond that has to be built - a bond I don't see myself building with any animal. So where does this conversation go if we run with the assumption that it's true and that I DON'T love animals?

If my parents fed me a meat product growing up before I could make my own informed choice...does that mean that I still can't love animals?

If I'm a vegetarian and I eat a salad where a single bacon bit was accidentally added without my awareness...does this invalidate all future love of animals?

Cats eat meat...does this mean they can't love humans?

My dog is lying next to me. I just pet my dog a little because I love my dog. I'm not a vegetarian.

Myth debunked.
Are you sure that by "petting" him you're not just checking how tender he is?

You eat animals for the nutrition they provide - "love" does not come into it. You eat meat for a balanced diet and as long as the animals are treated humanely, then what's the issue? Denying the nature of man and nutritional requirements just isn't realistic.
What mystery nutrient is there is meat that you can't get without it? Because I'm vegan and, uh, quite realistically I'm pretty sure I have all my bases covered. Visit a vegan restaurant in your city. We're not dropping dead.

Myth busted?

This reminds me of an argument I had with my manager once...

Basically she had a new REAL leather jacket and this was, of course, the hot new subject of the day amongst the females of the team. Being only one of two men on an 8 strong team at the time, I probably should have kept my mouth closed. But I felt it appropriate to ask:
"Aren't you a vegetarian?"
After a reply of "So?" I continued, pointing out that she is a vegetarian by choice and believes it's wrong to eat animals, so it's rather hypocritical to wear the hide of a cow (which just happenes to be one of her favorite animals).
The argument I was given was that it's ok for a vegetarian to wear leather because the animal wasn't killed specifically for THAT purpose. It's a by-product of the meat industry, so you might as well use it so it's not wasted.
I then pointed out that you might as well just eat the meat too. The animal has already been killed, so why let it's meat go to waste?
I was then shouted at by several 'sisters doing it for themselves' and called 'stupid' until I went for a cigarette.

SO. My question is: Was I wrong to say this was hypocritical? Or was this 'No meat/Yes leather' really that friggin' moronic?

Oh and regarding the OP, I do love and respect animals, but there is nothing wrong with consuming them. It's the circle of life etc...

I don't think I personally could kill an animal to eat it, and I love animals. but at the same time I love my meat. I figure that the animal is already dead, not eating it will not save it or change anything, infact it will probably just get chucked in the bin and go to waste if I don't eat it

And secondly what about people in third world countries that are forced to kill animals to survive, does that mean they don't love animals. the animal is already dead when you go to eat it for us so I don't see the problem.

I don't like PETA but confrontational ads aren't the issue I have with them. If people want to support an industry, why shouldn't they be made to acknowledge the suffering they cause?

Forcing acknowledgement.

When cattle, kangaroos and other meat animals are harvested they are killed instantly.
Hahaha, that's a terribly rosy idea of how the Australian meat industry works.
