So I was eating this big bag of Wal-Mart generic jerky (first mistake, I admit), and I thought to myself:

"Hmmm!... This tastes pretty good! Almost... Too good for generic..."

I looked to the "Ingredients:" on the back of the bag, and saw a big, fat:

"Monosodium Glutamate"

Huh... That sounds like it could be MSG (didn't know for sure at the time), and I heard that sh*t's killer, and quite possibly a poison used to control the population of "poor" people. Ingredients are listed by content %... and this was just after "flavoring"... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

Did extensive research (5 minutes of Googling), and yeah, apparently the shit shuts down organs over time, like your eyes and parts of your brain.

What else do you know of in your nation's diet is poisoning people to cut costs?

The same reason a corporation does anything: to maximize profit. MSG is used for flavouring, and it's used because it's cheaper than the alternative.

MSG isn't as scary as trans fats, though. Trans fats are used as preservatives, which is unfortunate, since they were originally developed to be used as an industrial glue.

MSG is an effective flavoring in the same way that many modern commercial drugs are effective medicines:

"Side effects may include nausea, fatigue, cancer, stroke, coma, rectal bleeding, and death. Please talk to your doctor to see if Xelaphenatrizine is right for you."

You do get great flavor for little cost, but you also get a lot of other things with it.

MSG in moderation is fine.

MSG? You're worried about MSG? Let me tell you there is a far more dangerous substance in all the food you eat.

Allow me to introduce Dihydrogen Monoxide. This colourless, odourless, tasteless liquid is highly lethal in large doses. Hundreds of people every year are lost to it in what would otherwise seem innocent circumstances, perhaps even thousands. The number of actual casualties remains unknown. This terrifying chemical is not only found in food but in cleaning fluids, poisons, biotoxins, lakes and rivers. In short, everywhere. And you should be afraid.

This is the chemical which carved the Great Canyon, along with countless other 'natural' icons. Dihydrogen Monoxide is even present on Mars where it carved channels into the planet's surface which were at first attributed to little green men. But no! This both acid-and-alkali chemical persevered! It's name is now uttered with fear around the globe. Join the struggle.

Quality troll.

Ineffective against those who watched that episode of "Bullshit!", however ;)

Did you know that every serial killer has consumed Dihydrogen Monoxide at some time in their lives? And when heated to 100[sup]o[/sup]C it can cause first degree burns! Get the word out people. More information may be found here [http://www.dhmo.org/].

Do you also believe that fluoridation of water was a Government plot to control the population of poor people? (And on that note, you know that there is cyanide in apples right? And that the green bits of potatoes actually contain the poison from Deadly Nightshade?).

Edit: cyanide, not arsenic...

Ahhh H2O. Nice joke, pity us chemistry nerds can see right through it :)

On the subject of MSG itself, let me check RTECS (Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances) to see if it really is a problem or not. (Goes away for a while to check...)

I was referencing an oppression conspiracy among rich whites against minorities ("poor" people), much in the vein of "The Boondocks".

But no, I don't think fluoridation was something sinister.

*looks at his Brita filter*

*looks back at the monitor*

And I'm not worried about it, either.

Edit: Changed the title of the thread to be more Fox-Newsy/sensationalist.

My old housemate had a bag of MSG, he used it in place of salt when cooking. Didn't seem to have much effect on him, unless you count sounding like a strangled cat when singing in the shower.

I honestly don't care enough to avoid it, since it's been shown that it's not harmful unless you either eat mountains of it or have an intolerance... neither of which applies to me. Besides, we're all gonna die of something eventually so I might as well have some tasty food while I'm here.

For a second I read it as Carbon Monoxide and was like "Yeah, that IS dangerous! RAISE AWARENESS! WOO!", retardedly failing to notice you said "liquid" until the "lakes and rivers" part....

It's mistakes like that have kept me from leading the wild and "sex every night with hot models" life of a chemist. DAMMIT! I want hot models too!

This report comes to the conclusion that it's only dangerous if you're injecting it into your brain. It has a mass of references at the bottom if you're interested in learning more.

Edit: search through the document for E621 to find the appropriate place.

Having a look at RTECS, some interesting data came up,
TDLo - Lowest published toxic dose Subcutaneous Rodent - mouse 3500 mg/kg/7D (intermittent) Brain and Coverings - other degenerative changes

Seems like it can cause some extensive damage when applied to test rodents over large doses. Of course pretty much any drug will do that sort of damage at that high concentrations.

There is also this;

TDLo - Lowest published toxic dose Oral Human - woman 50 mg/kg Lungs, Thorax, or Respiration - dyspnea

Although were still talking about MASSIVE does there.

In short yes it can do some damage, but if you stay clear of it it's not problem.

MSG is made from potato. You know what else can be made from that? Vodka! At least I think it is.
You know what else? MSG is an anagram for MGS--the game with most conspiracy theory in the world. Coincidence? I think not, muwahahaha!

Also, order your tinfoil hat from e-bay now. I recommend Olicon's grade A home made tin foil hat. It shields out subliminal messages as well as UV and Gamma rays!
