I agree with him that I just don't enjoy the concept of games like SSBB, so okay it's not for everyone, people need to get over that (my friends play it all the time and they enjoy it, so yeah some people will enjoy it but not all)
I see a lotta SSBB fans hating Yahtzee for his review (they probably watch the Halo 3 review many a times :p)

I think people just need to enjoy his commentary and then decide for themselves
I mean, I play a lot of mainstream games which he abhors, but I don't start hating him for that
but he is also quite persistent are reminding us to try new things, and to explore the unfamiliar

Most of them. Yahtzee is no God. He takes games and nitpicks the hell out of them for comedy. What people don't understand: He is not a reviewer.

I could take any of my favorite games, nitpick them, throw in some cussing and metaphors involving genitalia, and end up with the same product that he produces on a weekly basis.
Thank you, the idea of yahtzee not being a serious reviewer never seems to sink in.

And on topic, yes, about half of the games he's hated I've enjoyed to some degree, though he was spot on with a few of the train-wrecks he's covered.

Well, I actually agree with alot of his reviews, even knowing that they are for the purpose of comedy and arent to be taken at face value.

I actually liked Halo 3, being the only shooter of the generation allowing colour through its filters. I liked Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and my favorite game series is Final Fantasy (even though i havent really enjoyed a final fantasy game since FF6.

he mentioned that he is a reviewer by exception and I continue to view his reviews that way

There seems to be a lot of confusion in this thread about which games Yahtzee 'didn't like' or 'hated'. Just because he did a review for a new game doesn't mean he automatically hated it. He liked Gears of War 2. He seemed to like Fallout 3. I don't remember him saying he hated Oblivion, either - most of the review was making the point that the game lacked immersion. So many of the games listed here make me think half the posters just look to see if he's reviewed a game and then assume he hated it.

You guys appear to be mistaking pointing out the flaws in a game for giving it a 'bad score'. How many times has he referenced 'taking the piss out' of the games he's talking about? His job is to ridicule games for their flaws, not give you a thumbs up or thumbs down. If you watch his reviews like you would read a review in a gaming magazine, you're missing the point. I have never in my life played a game that didn't deserve a good 5 minute rant about things in it that are bad, no matter how many arbitrary perfect scores people give it.

I do adore Oblivion. I have also enjoyed games he's loathed but he loathes more or less everything in this universe with little margin of error allowed to slip past him. Generally his complaints are justified however and when he likes a game he's pretty accurate. Any game Yahtzee really enjoys I have to seriously consider buying, given his extremely vindictive reviewing style.

I didn't entirely agree with him regarding the kinds of people who play old games. I mean who can seriously dislike Fallout 1 / 2 even now after it is beginning to really show it's age.

I liked Dead Space even though Yahtzee called it 'bland.' I also liked Condemned 2, ending and all. So yes, I'd say I like my fair share of games Yahtzee didn't.

Hey, he's a critic. Of course there are games that I loved, but he has spoken about negatively. That's what critics do. Especially when it is subjective criticism (which, again, is what he does). If he can't get behind a certain genre of games, then it is perfectly fine that he doesn't like the mechanics of it or the genre itself.

One of the examples I'd like to name is Witcher. I love that game. I haven't gotten extremely far there due to Torchlight and the amazing gem that is Oblivion with OOO, but still, it is an amazing RPG. Swearing? Yeah, he does have a point, but eh, whatcha gonna do. Whole bunch of combat styles? Fine by me, adds to the role. I could agree on interface, had I played the non-enhanced version. Without the autosorting and divided alchemy and general clutter bags, yeah, I imagine it would be extremely frustrating. So, he certainly brings up valid gameplay flaws, however their impact is dependant on the sort of gamer you are. If I like a game of a certain genre close to me, I can forgive loads of technical flaws. On the contrary, for a genre that I am not fond of, such tiny things can simply piss me off and make me throw the game away.

So, hey, I guess it all boils down to remembering that Yahtzee is a critic, and his videos are subjective, and, most important of all, entertainment.

I liked and even loved many games Yahtzee hated. Considering he hates almost everything, that isn't so special.

The Witcher, Mass Effect, and Overlord 2.
But, then, that's because, unlike Yahtzee, I actually enjoy a good RPG when it comes around. This is largely because RPGs tend to have a MUCH higher replay value than most games in most other genres.

They are fun! And to me, that's what comes first.
euh he didn't hate Gears 2

He just found that there we're way to many chest high walls
True, he didn't hate it. But I didn't really have the same problems he had. Except for the go over and pat Dom on the head and all his bullets wounds seal up and he's a-ok.
He thought the chainsaw was overpowered in the campaign, making the game too easy.

I'd like to see him try this tactic on Hardcore or Insane.
Ooh good point Those chainsaws did seem a little too powerful on normal. But try the chainsword rush on hard core and you turn into bloody swiss cheese

Well it is bound to happen, we are different people. So we have different opinions. It isn't as though we all listen to one voice doing what the voice says.

I know this will be lost almost immediately if I don't use big text, so I hope I don't get put on probation for doing so.

[HEADING=1]Yahtzee is not a reviewer, he is a critic.[/HEADING]

And yes, there is a difference. A reviewer gives his general impression over a particular book/movie/game, rather than going into intricacies and doesn't analyze all the technical details of the material.

A critic, on the other hand, goes out of his way to do what a reviewer doesn't. His job is to analyze the work from a technical perspective, hence why Yahtzee places much more importance on specific points about the game, rather than what his overall impression is. It is his JOB to find all the faults in the work, regardless of whether or not he liked it (hell, I'm fairly sure he said this himself in one of his episodes).

Granted, I'm not sure why I'm really defending him seeing as he doesn't know or care who I am.
Good God, no. Being intentionally, excessively negative is not criticism. Meanwhile, considering how technical aspects of a work affect the overall effect of the work IS criticism.

Yahtzee is the exact opposite of a critic. A critic attempts to be as objective as possible, removing his own personal preferences from the equation to come up with a more intellectual view of a work. Yahtzee is intensely subjective, giving very myopic views of games and refusing to venture outside of his safe zone to try gaming experiences that aren't his niche.

I enjoyed Dead Space, Heavenly Sword, and MGS 4.

As for people who think Yahtzee is an entertainment critic, no. IMO, Yahtzee is an entertainer, and a critic/reviewer. His criticisms are actually fact. He pinpoints the bad things in a game, and even nitpicks the worst parts of a good game, even though it's still a good game. So, Yahtzee is pretty much the ultimate nitpicker. If I am interested in a game he reviewed, then I watch him to see what the worst flaws are. As for the good parts of the game, then I'll look at someone who over-emphasizes the best parts of it.

His comedy is also a bonus to his nitpicks.
