I can sort of relate, I don't mind another Portal game being made, it's more another Left 4 Dead game being made. I would have rather seen more support for the first Left 4 Dead while they focused on Portal 2 and Episode 3. So much of what was in Left 4 Dead 2 could have been added with a patch in the first game.

I enjoyed Portal more than Half Life. Sue me.
This.

Oh and if you think we're getting Episode 3, a 5 hour game after a over a 3 year wait your a moron. Valve has said that they regretted moving into episodes rather than making a new full fledged threquel. The next game in the HL series is going to Half Life 3, I'd bet my grandmother on it.

Are you seriously shuffling in your seat every second of every day waiting for this game?

I love the Half Life series and would love to see what happens next, but i couldn't care if it took another 10 years to be released. Just forget about it until then, as long as it's a good game in the end then all is well :D

One of two things could happen:

1. They start working on it proper after P2's release.
2. They wait longer and release a full-game-length episode.
3. People lose interest.

Personally, I don't think they're making an Episode 3; I think they're working on Half Life 3. I could be wrong, but it would explain a lot.
Yeah I came to the same conclusion when I found out Gabe Newell said the next HL game (he didn't call it Episode 3) would be the last of Gordon's story arc. I can't see the story finished up in an episode thats only few hours long. If this is the case, then I'm certainly happy to wait it out.

get Portal 2, but probably wont get Episode 3.
Better change your avatar to a piece of cake then, you sheep! How can you even say anything like that! Not getting episode 3? BLASPHEMY!
Calm down, no need to turn into Moviebob. HEY OH!

To be honest I'd prefer Portal 2. I'm not a big Half-Life guy. Valve games always feel quite cold and clinical to me, but Portal's mostly a puzzle game so it's not so important (plus it's set in a lab).

You too, huh?
Me three. I find it bizarre how people refute this argument with "Nuh Uh, Valve said they are making Episode 3 next".

As if gaming companies never make stuff up or change their minds.

It's pretty clear at this point, at least to me anyway. It's been 3 years with no word. Valve are slow, but they're not that slow when you consider another episode would probably be less that 5 hours long. If they're making Half Life 3 it makes a hell of a lot more sense.

Gabe himself said he regretted moving into episodes (though I think Episode 2 is the best in the series but whatever) plus you got to consider that no matter how good Half Life 2 is it's still a dated game which has been ripped off ever since it's release. If Valve really want to create another great and innotive game from the series I think they may need to make certain features more fresh; change the enemies, change the enviroment, add a multiplayer conponent, replace many of the weapons you use. Maybe introduce something as game changing as the Gravity Gun into the mix. And for that they need an entirely new game.

You see, the thing is that Valve actually exist in a parallel dimension where time moves slower. In the episode 3 office for example only a year has passed since episode 2. Valve doesn't do anything about this because now they only have to pay the guys once every few months.

I don't know what's up with Valve but I have the feeling that episode 3 may be on the back-burner. Either that, or they redesigned it several times.

We might get lucky: HL2E3 might end up being of decent length.

Valve were planning and working on Ep1 and Ep2 while developing HL2 so maybe the past three years have let valve think about what they're going to do with Half life 3.

And I don't see why people are so whiney about this sort of thing. Okay, so it won't come out for a while! Just play TF2, or Morrowind, or, I dunno, Day of Defeat while you're waiting.
If you don't understand then it can't be explained. Some things just make sense to some people.

On Topic: The best way for Portal 2 to end is as follows:

Chell causes some sort of time slip/warp/tear/whatever-you-want-to-call-it after completing the events in Portal 2. The game ends with her on her back looking up at the ceiling (much the way the first game ended). Off in the corner is are the letters "Bor" on what appears the be the hull of a vessel, with the rest of the letters off screen. Suddenly, a very familiar voice calls out, "Holy crap! Are you okay?"
Suddenly, Alyx leans into view, staring down at Chell (and the player). She then looks off screen and yells, "Gordon! Over here!" Gordon looks down at Chell and the screen cuts to black. The End.

What better way to announce Half-Life Whatever than to tie it officially into the Portal time line?
Agreed. But 'Holy crap' sounds way too un-Alyx-ey... I used to think, just after completing Portal, that it should be somehow incorporated into Half-life 3 (this was back before I knew it'd be Episode 3).

Also, I think the Source engine needs at least an upgrade before Portal 2 gets finished. That splash sprite is the shittiest one I've ever seen beyond a 2000 game.

Have you considered that massive changes to Source or a new engine is in progress.

And they have to keep updating old games and Steam.

So Episode 3 is a tiny concern.

They'll probably make a proper start on it after Portal 2 hits shelves.

Oh good. Another one of these. The least you could have done was named it "The Venting Thread" and made it open to any kind of quick, useless, rant. That would at least provide for some creativity and originality. This way, we'll just have a discussion about.....Well, there is no discussion. Yes, Half Life 3 has yet to be announced.......Yeah, that's about it.

Now, I usually find this really obnoxious, but come on. There is literally nothing left to say.

[/thread]
Well, what better way to vent than with a valve.

After they didn't announce anything Half-Life related at E3, I just made me peace with it.

When it comes, it comes.

I have no doubts that Portal 2 will come out first. Hopefully this one will last longer that 2 hours. And if it doesn't, it better not cost $60.
They've already stated that it has a "more conventional length", about ten to fifteen hours. $40 sounds about right.
