Not anytime soon mind, don't worry; this isn't a "I'm suicidal" type thread, quite the opposite in fact. I'm happy with my life. I have strong enough opportunities for the future to make a good living and nothing major to complain about. You see, I occasionally read or hear about people who are afraid of death, some to the point where they obsess over it, trying to prevent their eventual and inevitable demise for as long as possible. I don't understand these people. I also read about people's musings on death, theories and predictions as to what happens when we die. Eternal happiness, reincarnation, returning to dust and nothingness, like our lives didn't even matter. I don't understand that line of thinking either.

None of that is at all relevant to me, yet I do eventually want to die. Why is this you ask? Not out of contempt, not out of curiosity, No. The reason is simple: The threat of my death makes my life worth living. It makes life much more exciting that way. The fact that the cruel hammer of fate could swing down upon me at anytime gives me even more of a reason to get as much enjoyment out of LIVING as possible. As weird as it might sound I think death makes life more fun! To take away the threat of death removes all reason to live. To put that another way, without death life is meaningless (the opposite is true also) and who knows, maybe dying is just as much fun as living! (probably not, but maybe!)

So discuss! Agree, Disagree, think I'm absolutely bat-sh*t insane, all opinions welcome.

This is exactly how I feel.
I'm always worried about death, the afterlife, and all I can do is try to apply my own philosophy to it but I get nothing.
I wish I could follow a religion to give me comfort, but the idea of death terrifies me. It's the old "there's no point in living," thoughts that come across my head when I think about these things. I know I should just enjoy myself, and I keep telling myself that, but I can't find any solace.

I am envious of you.

Not at all. Foolishness is different to a high regard for the balence of life and death.

That.

I don't worry about death because there is no point to. Why do people fear death? How do you know if death is good or bad? It is just the next step for my soul to continue on. I don't want to be immortal, that takes away my humanity. I want to know that I lived and not fear while I am alive.

I think what he is saying is that the risk of dieing makes life a lot more fun and exillirating. Take somthing really dangerous say street racing (i know it's not the best but im in a rush) it's fun because 1 its illeagle and two it could kill you. The fact that your life is on the line every time you go around the corner makes it 10 times more fun. If you couldn't die street racing would be dull and boring if you crash you just get a new car and do it all again but in real life you crash and you're most likley dead. It's like you know when you have to work for somthing it makes that somthing much better than if some one just gave it to you. It's basicly the same thing if your life wasn't in danger it would take the rush away. He doesn't want to be a soldier die in an excitable way he saying he want to live in excitment with the risk of death always there and finally when he is old he will die. I agree with him but im also glad we die because i don't think i could put up with life for much longer than we have to. It's like spending too much time with a friend sure you like them but spend too much time with them and they start to annoy you same goes with life. After a while life starts to make you go old and frail and you can't deal with it any more because the things that you used to look past now annoy the hell out of you. In my oppinion i want to die also.

"The threat of my death makes my life worth living" thing has never ever made any sense to me. Would chocolate taste worse if you knew you would never die? Would music sound worse? Would you stop caring for your loved ones if you'd be around forever? Maybe if you live long enough to get tired of it, you'd have a problem, but you don't live in the future, you live now, and I don't see how now would not get any worse.

I'm happy for you that you don't have to worry about death, but your logic is insane troll to me. "Without death, life is meaningless"... I'm sure you wouldn't think that if you really were immortal.

I'm the same. The thought of dying (and the following nothingness) is what keeps me going.

It doesn't mean I'd be living to the fullest, but I sometimes just need that thought to operate. I got through the most of 2009, especially, thinking that I will die tomorrow.

I'm not afraid of death. It's but a soothing and rewarding completion waiting. I'm not actively helping it happen either, like doing reckless things that would probably harm me, but it's nice to know that death is there.

I agree with this.

If I couldn't die then I would have the opportunity to whatever the hell I wanted.

The fact we can die limits us because doing something that could potentially kill us could seem to be a foolish risk for anyone who wants to live and experience as many things (that aren't as risky) as possible.

There are a lot of crazy things you see some people do all the time, usually daring stunts and some very extreme sports. The fact that those things could kill you quite easily would put most people off of experiencing them. The same couldn't be said if you couldn't die from it.

Obviously some would argue that death defying feats wouldn't have the same adrenaline rush if you couldn't die from doing it.

Here's the inside scoop: Everyone dies. No one is immortal.

The idea behind gaining something from the concept of "I will die", is basically that you're going to die eventually, so make the best of it. If you could live forever (although I don't think immortality is something to even include in this discussion), everything you're supposed to do and want to do, would be pushed into the future, because you'd have all the time. But everyone's actually going to die, and for some that strives them to live now and to not be afraid of death because it's eventually happening and pretty much makes anything you're doing, worth doing.

i'd prefer to be immortal. the idea of simply ceasing to exist isn't exactly what i'd call pleasant. the idea of eternal existence however, sounds great to me. now, i really doubt that i will in fact be immortal, but the thought is nice.

dying, to me, is just the end, with no new beginning, where everything you are is just erased from existence; and therefore i fear it. i'd probably convert myself into a brain in a jar just to avoid it longer then i regularly would.

the whole "life without death is meaningless" thing is silly if you ask me, as life's only meaning (to me) is to exist, and deaths only meaning, is to end that existence.

i find the threat of death horrifying, as i feel my very existence is much too precious to lose.

Yeah, I get making the best of it. I don't get saying life would be meaningless without death.

I'm mortal, and you know how I spend 90% of my time? I procrastinate. I couldn't possibly procrastinate more if I had all the time in the world. Fear of death does nothing to help me "live more"... in the end, it's only gonna make me live less.

If it's of any comfort I was pretty much the same when I was younger. I honestly can't tell you how I stopped fearing death, I guess at some point down the line I reached a sort of "break limit" and I just went "No, Fuck you, Death." Nothing triggered it and it happened over time. I do hope for your sake that you overcome your fears, Being scared of death isn't fun.

While I would agree with your thoughts that impending death should be (and is for some) a reason to enjoy life, personally I find that it really doesn't feel like that to me.

Life feels like one big job, with occasional little moments of fun, but ultimately that death is the 'end of the day' so to speak. A chance to sit down and relax because so little in life brings me enough enjoyment to really continue doing... well... anything.

That being said, I am relatively content with my life as it is. I'm not in the mood to end my life, but I welcome death and, as was said above, honestly wouldn't mind going the soldier route just so I know there's a higher chance of it.
And who doesn't like the potential to die in a cool way? :p

I think I'm still pretty mentally immature so I'm sure it's something that develops over time

I don't worry about death because there is no point in worrying in the first place in my eyes. You cannot prevent the inevitable. It's the threat of death that makes some people do something with their lives, to try and make a lasting difference. Medical discoveries and understanding of how the human body works come from the mortality of us all. I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.

If you haven't taken any risks in life, then you haven't lived your life... at least I'm told. Although I'm pretty sure that if I was immortal I would still be doing heaps with my life building a gigantic empire and such over time.

I agree with you.. I think that death is a main fact of our life... We all have to face it today or by tomorrow.... I always welcome my death to come near me... Even I am very excited to know that what happened with the human after death..

You don't think that the ability to do anything (EDIT:without risk) will ultimately leave you feeling empty? Overcoming risk and the fear of death is what makes dangerous activities fun. The reason why we aren't trilled by paperwork is because it's extremely low risk, If skydiving without a parachute carried the same risk and we had to skydive day in day out the same thing would happen: We'd all be bored out of our skulls going skydiving!
