On an unrelated note, have you heard of Sparklehorse or Doctor Steel? I like those guys, it'd be nice to find someone else who knows of them.
Wow, I haven't heard Doctor Steel in AGES! I used to listen to "Fibonacci Sequence" and "Build the Robots" like every day. I assume you watch Jacksfilms too from saying "Owaddafuq?"
I just googled Dr Steel out of curiosity.
Thank you. So much.
No problem! Dr. Steel for World Emperor!!! :D

I have a few gamer friends, but none of my school friends have heard of the band "Mindless Self Indulgence"

I also hate how if I hate something someone else likes, I am accused of hating it because it is popular, f*k that, my sister pulled this on me with Final Fantasy 13, I thought the game was boring as hell and so did a lot of people.

It's kinda a shame not many people know who MSI are, they're pretty cool.

Anyways, My school is divided into 3 segments, people who play Minecraft, people who don't know, or only know a little, about Minecraft, and the people who know about Minecraft and despise it, most not even playing it. Since I fall into the former, I get into lots of debates with people over Minecraft and whether it's a quality game or not.

I often have the opportunity to use the phrase simply because it's true. But I usually never say it because it is too commonly associated unwarranted arrogance. So I just come up with some alternative to keep the conversation going.

On its own, I really don't see what's wrong with it, if it is used properly.

Saying "You probably haven't heard of them" before you even start talking about a band, show, film, etc. is really just a code for saying "I'm an elitist douche". Saying what you like and then having people stare at you blankly for a bit and then saying, "I guess you haven't heard of them/it" is not.

Really though, this thread is just therapy for a bunch of people to express how "out there" their tastes are, when in fact most of us consume fairly mainstream things. No, I don't care how "indie" your band's label is, the fact that you're on a label and have released a few albums internationally means they're hardly "underground" anymore.

Even though I am constantly having to explain stuff that I'm into and no one else around me is, I don't assume anything. The "you probably haven't heard of it" phrase just makes you sound like an asshole.

If I like say, a certain band, I don't act superior to people I know that have no idea who I'm talking about. If the opportunity comes up, I like to have them listen to said music, especially if I think it's something they might dig. Because in my mind, the more people that like artists I enjoy, the better. I have something to talk to people about, and sharing stuff that I like is better than felling haughty and superior b/c of the obscurity of some of the things I like..

It's the same thing with everything else. If I really love something and am talking to people who I think might end up liking it too, then I'll recommend it to them, without being an asshole.
I agree completely with your sentiments. I'd rather share my unusual band or movie with my friends so we can enjoy something together. People who keep it to themselves so they can be "unique" must be lonely jerks.

I don't use the exact phrase, but I still have to get the same idea across when I talk about most things that I like. For example, I am a musician, a percussionist to my core, and there is nothing is this world that even comes close to my love of the marimba in particular. Since music is so central to my everyday life, the topic will certainly pop up in casual conversation. When I don't have to explain what "percussion" is, I have to describe what a "snare drum" is, or what "timpani" are. Even when I don't have to describe those, it is a very rare treat for someone to intrinsically know what a marimba is, so I have to proceed to give the same song and dance using the dreadfully inaccurate phrase that it's "a really big xylophone". I often try to describe the more important differences, such as in the overtones and timbre, and the amount of mallets generally held in each hand, but that often goes over the heads of the people less familiar with musical instruments. Oh, and I just don't even try to describe the world music instruments I play/enjoy, I usually just avoid mention of the instruments themselves, or just mention that they're obscure.

Apart from that, my interests concerning video games are terrible for trying to find two-sided conversation, since I have a penchant for gaming history and I rarely get modern AAA games, since I usually just use Steam or play games from previous console generations, and I'm a noncompetitive antisocial gamer. It doesn't make sense to assume that the average person will know about the video game crash of '83 or that they will know much about the Anonymous/Sony PSN scandal. It's never that I'm dismissing the mainstream, I just have uncommon tastes, and fortunately, I have yet to hear someone accuse me of doing so.

I'm lucky to not be mislabeled a hipster, though that might have to do with the fact that I generally wish that more people knew about the topics I enjoy rather than being uninviting to those interested in the topic.

Captcha: hobby-horse. Strangely appropriate considering how often I try to converse about these topics.

Because if not, then I have not heard of it.
Nope, sorry pal. I'm referring to John Sterling. He does Trance Electronica and doesn't even have a wikipedia page.
Do you know where I could get his music that isn't myspace?

Well, one of his albums (Brave New World) is on Itunes, and you can listen to some of his stuff on youtube (he actually didn't mind his fans uploading some of his stuff there). He's also doing some newer stuff with the Sterling Angel project, which has a youtube channel of its own. I hope that helps.

Yeah I get that whenever I say Persona 4 is my favourite game ever. It's annoying since you can't explain the plot without massively oversimplying it and making sound horrible in summary.

Try it, it just doesn't work.

I get this over some anime/manga as well, not that I read some super obscure MLG amazingness all the time but i'll say that my favourite manga is The World God Only Knows and my favourite anime is probably Code Geass. Which is best described as the mainstream of the not-quite-mainstream.

I'm watching Angel Beats now (on episode 3, looks pretty promising) solely because one guy said something about it on a recommendation thread. THE OPENING IS SO HYPE!

It's literally just Angel playing a piano... HOW IS IT SO GOOD?!
Angel Beats is an awesome show.
*looks at my two Angel Beats posters*. Episode 3 it totally gets real.

ot: and I get a problem with this band. When someone asks me what my favourite band is/what I'm listening to/who-it-is-I-actually-saw-at-that-gig-I-keep-raving-on-about I can either say "well, you probably don't know them..." (which is almost always true, I've only ever met two people in real life (outside of the gig) who actually listen to them) or sound like a douchebag as I pronounce the most pretentious band name ever to have existed 4 times cos they didn't hear it clearly the first 3 times (making sure they know that there's an exclamation mark in the middle).
You think that's bad? Try telling people you like to listen to "Sunn O)))". I mean, how the hell do you pronounce that?

I do this alot with music and people call me a hipster, mainly because when people ask me "What you listening to?" and at the time I am listening to some Experimental Jazz group from the 70's that were never famous or something and the person asking me the question thinks Avenged Sevenfold are an underground band of course of they would of never heard of them and it's pretty obvious.
I love your avatar. Oh yeah and it pisses me off to no end when people who listen to shit like avenged sevenfold and black veil brides complain about "the mainstream".

ot: and I get a problem with this band. Of course cos the phrase "you probably haven't heard of them" has become a caricature of itself I always have to go for the latter option and cringe. It gets even worse if they ask what genre they are. "well, they're, post-rock? it's kinda ambienty and shit"

Thing is that godspeed you! black emperor aren't even obscure for their genre, but problems still come up. Heck, most people I know don't know who Brand New, Bon Iver and The Weeknd are and they're not exactly local pub artists.
Ha ha I totally agree! When I said GY!BE have probably the most consistantly brilliant discography band I had heard people tend to disregard my opinion because their name sounds like a "shitty metalcore band" same with My Bloody Valentine as well.
I get that too. Everyone thinks I'm a metalhead (I do listen to metal but it only makes up a small part of what I listen to these days) so I then have to explain what their sound is. And if I mention My Bloody Valentine people say "oh I've heard of them, aren't they that welsh heavy metal band [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_for_My_Valentine]?".

OhJohnNo said:
Also Brand New amazing band (especially The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me) but nobody has heard of them that I know, I play in a band and I said we should do a cover of Sowing Season but they all disagreed because they hadn't heard it before and they wanted popular songs to cover, fools. Well... Gonna have to stick to Oasis tracks to cover.
TDAG is probably my 2nd favourite album behind f#a#. I don't get how they aren't more popular; unlike gy!be their music is pretty accessible but at the same time it has such depth to it. I saw them live earlier this year too.

I'll always keep a special place in my heart for Epica though, there aren;t many bands where I can say that I once walked in on their singer changing backstage (I worked at this music festival and got lost, then heard someone and decided to ask for directions. And then she turned out to be in her underwear :/ )
O_O You saw Simone... in her underwear...

I have never been more jealous of anyone than I am of you right now.
Thing is, I'd much rather have just encountered her reading or something to pass the time before their show later. That could have gotten rid of the awkwardness and might have opened up a conversation. Who knows, maybe we could have become friends (I didn't know Epica at the time, so you can imagine my surprise at seeing her on stage later on).

Either way, it was an experience that made me an instant fan both because I really like their music but there's also a story behind how I discovered them :)

I'll try!

Persona 4 is a game about finding the truth through a metaphysical representation of our endeavor to fight through normal life adversity, represented by mythical monsters and deities that become aspects of our being in order to help us through the challenges that life poses. It has an aspect of sim-dating, anime themes, turn based elemental gameplay with stats and gear, long cutscenes and a murder mystery to drive the plot of seeking the truth forward in a dramatic and intense way. It has some grind and building relationships with people is a core element of the game since their support will make your capacity for enduring life's hardships greater.

Oh and Code Geass is...quite mainstream lol. Any anime that has seen a dubbing is. I watch stuff never brought out of Japan regularly though so...I guess I'm not the average American anime fan...I'm not even American! :D

I think trying to define what's mainstream in anime terms lies in where you set your boundaries. Like if I were to pull myself away from my laptop for a second (weird I know) and go outside to ask the first person I see what Code Geass is I can safely guess they don't know what it.

Anime is by its very nature non-mainstream if you live in the West I would say, I live in the UK for example. I will say quite a few people online would know what CG is but they would mostly be anime fans already wouldn't they? So they're already into that kind of stuff? They've at least dabbled in it. Like if I had a Facebook page (thankfully I don't) and asked everyone on my friends list what CG was I would say they wouldn't know either.

Yet I can agree that it is pretty mainstream at the same time... The Internet is fun.

Oh and you had to pull out the big words to pull off a decent summary of P4. That's cheating! C+ at best since you didn't mention Naoto's sick hat.

I jokingly called the TC the "h word" and was sent this.

"This message is being automatically sent by the forum system to let you know that you have been issued a warning by a forum moderator.

Warning Details
Post: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.393857.15934875

This is just silly now. This is no longer a forum if we can't respond slightly jokingly to these types of topics.

This is just really weird that any human being would think this kind of thing helps make a forum better.

EDIT: Ugh I just realized, this probably means the TC was actually offended enough to report me AND a mod agreed that it should be removed and warrants a warning.
Disclaimer! "Offended" does not constitute name calling. I wasn't calling you "offended" just saying it seems you were offended by what I said. Please don't report me masa!

You say you enjoy Gengnam style, your point is moot.
Pop music (gengnam style included) is designed meticulously to attract an audience not through actual artistic vision but a repetitive and catchy "beat"

It seems you really are just following trends. Persona rocks, call of duty is shit.
Can you explain why it is shit specifically? Can you tell me something it does horribly wrong that other games don't? Can you tell me how it's gameplay is broken fundamentally?
Probably not, but other people say it sucks so you have to agree.

I don't like COD either but at least I have actual reasons, I don't just accuse the game of being shit, I form my own opinion and understand it's just opinion.
It's a fine game but I don't enjoy playing a game where I have no control over how I do anything. Go there, shoot everyone, press and hold x, repeat.

Can you do that? Nope, just agree with the masses when they say it's shit. Hey that song I don't even understand the lyrics to is popular, guess I like that too. Hey Avengers is popular and nerdy, I'll be so cool by liking that.

What a hipster
Daaayamn, aren't arguments easy when you make up both sides? Because I also read him say that he had no reasons for disliking CoD besides it's popularity. As well as him admitting he couldn't explain why he disliked it.

Wait... no, that was you who said all that. Weird, he must have edited out all of those pre-emptive replies to your post from his OP.

OT: I run into that problem a lot as well. Usually not with music though, as I'm not particularly adventurous in that area. My brother is the worst, I'm seriously considering starting to use that response with him with anything that isn't mainstream mainstream. I brought up steampunk a month ago and he had no clue what it was, and didn't believe me at all when I said it was a pretty well known thing
You should take my comments WAY more seriously, the TC apparently did too.

Sorry I made people mad with my posts. I forgot this is the land of very sensitive people and I'm a troll or a violator if I offend anybody's delicate sensibilities.
Let's go back to talking about how COD blows and Persona 4 is super super deep yo.

I keep wanting to play the Tales games - played a bit of Tales of the Abyss once - but can't find them for the PS2 anywhere. Cheap that is. (Not fishing for a marriage proposal!)

Plus if I was in Australia you'd be in danger of me trussing you up and stealing your ticket. >_>
Yeah, it's actually pretty difficult with the tales games being so sparse/across so many platforms.

I have Tales of eternia and tales of the world on PSP
Tales of the abyss on 3DS
Tales of innocence on DS
Tales of symphonia on gamecube
Tales of symphonia 2 on wii
Tales of graces f on ps3

I have been considering buying an xbox 360 just for vesperia, aswell as learning japanese so I can play all the games in the series that were never localised >.<

Theoretically, the kratos aurion knowing woman that i'd marry would get a ticket bought for them.. and besides, I might enjoy the trussing up.
I can't lie, even for a ticket/marriage proposal: I don't know who Kratos Aurion is. (Although after googling him he looks darned cool. Mmmm, redheads...)

Any hypothetical trussing up would have to wait until next year; then I'll be 30 and you will then (barely) be eligible according to the half-age-plus-seven rule. Cradle-robber status, here I come!
