This isn't really a review, more my thoughts on the game.

The Wolf Among Us is a game by Telltale, the guys who made The Walking Dead game. It's based on the DC franchise, Fables, but you don't need any knowledge of the series beforehand, hell, I didn't.

Like The Walking Dead, it's a point and click adventure game, where you're given multiple conversation options in dialogue. Also like The Walking Dead, the choices you make, and the things you say have an effect on how the story progresses.

Wolf Among Us is about fairy tale characters, but set hundreds of years after their respective stories, set in New York , if I had to guess, in about the 1970's-80's, they are hidden away from normal people, or 'Mundies', in human form.

You play as Bigby Wolf, the Big Bad Wolf from the Red Riding Hood tale. He is a sheriff of sorts, who helps police the fables, making sure none of them step out of line, reveal their true nature to the world etc. The game does a really good job setting itself up, and a small encyclopaedia of knowledge updates itself when new characters and settings are introduced, and I found myself checking it every time it updated.

Long story short, if you like mysteries, liked The Walking Dead, or like Telltale games in general, you should really pick it up, the voice acting is superb, the visuals are gorgeous, the mechanics are refined from TWD games, and overall I really enjoyed the 2 hours or so I spent with the first episode, and I wasn't expecting the way it ended, which is a good thing.

If the rest of the series ends up being the same quality, I may have already found my GOTY here folks, you should really check it out.

^This. XD

But seriously, I agree with everything said, and add that if you are a Fables fan like I am, this game will knock your fucking socks off. It is everything I wanted as a fan, and more. Buy it naow, it really is another contender for GOTY.

It looks really sweet and Telltale has received a lot of benefits from me in terms of being willing to take a chance...

Unfortunately (well, not really but kind of) for them, I do not ever purchase episodic games ever since Valve went and ruined my trust for them. Also, I'm too impatient for that (which is why I go Netflix rather than watch...well....anything on real tv. Once the series has actually completed, I plan on purchasing the whole package.

Wait... It came out already??

I didn't hear anything about it releasing 0.0

I was probably going to get it, but now I'm without a gaming system until Thanksgiving, so I'll need to remember it for then

You will forever be a constant disappointment to me, Taco.

Me and your mother are really disappointed.

Disappointed.

While I'm in a similar boat, you do technically (at least on Steam, I'm unsure of the console versions) get the entire "season" by purchasing this one, and Telltale has built up enough credibility on actually finishing their episodic games even before The Walking Dead.

I just want to wait because I don't want the story drip-fed to me over the course of months; I deal with that enough from television.

So are there still no manual saves, unskippable and spoileriffic "Next On..."'s and "Previously on..."'s (especially if you bought the entire episode collection) and that console "DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR CONSOLE WHEN THE GAME IS SAVING!" pre-menu warnings for the PC game?
I tried TWD, but the above things were simply gamebreaking for me and prevented me from finishing episode 2 after having to replay an entire scene for the second time due to not being able to manually save progress.
I commend Telltale for trying something new, but the execution is severely flawed and gamebreaking, in my opinion.

Those are gamebreaking issues for you?

Hmm, can't say I agree, but then again, I can always take the good with the bad.

The unskippable "Next On" featurettes are essentially gamebreaking for me, since they spoil a lot of the plot and game enviroments of the otherwise wildly-unpredictable game that TWD is.
Manual saves, too.
People freaked out about there being no manual saving in Shadowrun Returns, and having to replay entire sections because of, yet nobody bats an eye when that same thing applies to TWD(and similar games). Go figure.
It's 2013. We really shouldn't have to contend with such arbitrary limitations and soap opera carry-overs.

Good point.

For me, it is less about column A and more column B.

It's why I don't have a clue what happened at the Red Wedding, the fate of Walter White, the ending between Dexter and Debra Morgan, and what happens at this zombie infested prison; I don't like to wait.

Hell, I JUST finished The Shield and that started in 2001 :D

We have widely different definitions of what 'gamebreaking' is.

Slight inconvenience isn't gamebreaking for me. The game not working, or being extremely buggy? That's gamebreaking.

And now I'll be off before I derail your topic any further.

After watching TB's review (he did complete the first episode), it's just seems to be a purely cinematic experience paring with non-existent gameplay. This is a major deal breaker for me, I don't play games to watch as I could watch a Let's play instead.

Goty? Doubtful, a game without any significant gameplay isn't a game. Ever since Dear Esther we're seemed to be getting more and more excuses for a game.

Take off your headphones and go make a sandwich. Go take a piss, read a newspaper comic, turn off your screen. They're not long and they're not mandatory watching.

OT: I've certainly been thinking about it. I think I'll at least wait for episode 2 or 3 to be released, don't really like the idea of waiting for every update.

Tell me, have you ever heard of "Sierra Adventures" or "Classic Lucasarts"?

They're called classics for a god damned reason.

Well they have great cut scenes, but you need to have a stomach of pure titanium to digest that gameplay.
This time they also removed "hard" mode where everything isn't just outlined in crayon and actions quadruple explained so you wouldn't by mistake ever figure something out on your own.

I do love their story telling, it's just everything surrounding that being very troubling.

Games are an interactive medium.

Can you interact with The Wolf Among Us? Yes?

Then it's a game.

I really only got it because of the characters, a grimdark Brother's Grimm (heh) portrayal. It's a lot of what made the first Shreks so original and great.

So far I vehemently dislike Telltale's dialogue trees (I've never played The Walking Dead). I hate that hesitating for a second is taken as Wolf glaring at everyone and making them hate you, and I hate that some options get out of hand. I'm really thinking of the conversation with Colin in the beginning: "It isn't my fault" is a fine way to get him off your back, but if you choose "It's my job," you immediately threaten him afterward and make him hate you a little more. Eugh.

I really like the Elder Scrolls method that each word you speak has to be chosen by you.

I have always had mixed feelings about those "games"...

I tried out Walking Dead and it was cool, yes, but the actual game part is lacking so much... interesting history, but GAMEPLAY...

I just cant live without Gameplay. It severely limits my final personal score for the game (Would just say "Barely Decent" and keep it there).

And a part inside me dosnt really wants to see more of those kind of games... I dont want them to take over or some stupid shit like that. I wouldt complain if they vanished from existense, in fact...

And yet part inside me also dont wants that because it was a cool... ugh... work, yeah.omg -

GG WP to Telltale or however they are called. Keep up the good work... I guess... but dont overdo it please! :D
