Not knowing Queen because of when you were born isn't really an excuse. Most of my friends know and love Queen and they were born well after Queen became less popular. It's to do with the environment you grow up in and many other factors.

She just happened to be among the few that don't know Queen. I really need to emphasize few.

Oh I see this almost every day. It's a sin to not have listened to Queen, but it should be freakin' illegal to not know who they are.

Not everyone listens to rock, not everyone listens to the radio and/or watches TV..
I can name several "immensely popular and influential" artists and you all will have no clue who am I talking about.
If not for the fact that I've seen a lot of TV shows in the 90's and HEARD THE CHARACTERS SAY THE NAMES OF THE BANDS YOU MENTION, I wouldn't know them either.
I don't know Simon and Garfunkel but I've heard someone say that band's name on TV (or duo, I don't know). I've only seen the name Alice in Chains used in threads like this one, where some people are SHOCKED that the majority haven't heard of them.
And who is Def Leper :) ?

I've given up having conversations with my friends over music. They hate my stuff (emotionally potent, brutal heavy metal) and I hate their stuff (derivitive popular tunes).

That said, teaching the history of 20th Century music ought to be on ALL school curriculums. Never let there be a generation who don't recognise Hendrix, The Beatles or Queen. They don't have to be fans...but it helps to know where you come from.

My friend never having heard of Muse takes the cake, I believe.

Then again, he's tone deaf and doesn't like any music that isn't background music.
I can honestly say that, if it wasn't for Guitar Hero III, I never would have heard of Muse. Even now, they're just "that band with the really repetative song that made my wrist hurt."

OT: The one that has always bothered me is when I mention Pink Floyd and people say "Oh, yeah, he's pretty good." It doesn't bother me when people haven't heard of them, seeing as they haven't been really big since the late 70s, but when people do know them and think it's a "he" instead of a "them", it gets on my cookies.

Besides, all you have to do is sing the first couple lines of "Another Brick In The Wall pt. 2" and people generally know who you're talking about. I imagine the same would be true for Queen if you mentioned "Another One Bites The Dust", "We Are The Champions", "You're My Best Friend", or the Wayne's World portion of "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Sure muse is pretty big but it's not near Queen is it?

Muse did that Twilight song, right?
that Twilight song right?
that Twilight song

Oh... God.

Oh God.

I don't know what an aneurysm sounds like but I think I'm about to hear it.

OT: People not knowing of a band is fine, really, there's all sorts of reasons she might not have heard of them

THIS, however:

that Twilight song right?

Now it's okay.

I'm sad to say that, more often than not, I'm in the position of the store clerk.
"You haven't heard about Cat Stevens?"
- Nope.
"But you should have!"
- Why?
"Because he was huge!"
- And? I don't keep up with the music scene, and I certainly do not keep track of what was going on 30 years ago.
I fail to see how this makes me an inferior person. I could name several artists I like that you've never heard of: Jaco Pastorius, Richard Bona, Gojira, Return to forever.
I listen to - and keep up with - what I like. I don't see why this is a horrible thing.

That said, I do like Queen, and I'm quite surprised there are people out there who have managed to never hear about them. I don't resent them for it, mind, I just think it's strange.

hey do you know the muffin man.
OT: i know people who havent heard of Nightwish, but they dont listen to metal. shame... other than that, nope.
I hear ya buddy, I have a few Nightwish albums, but I don't expect people to know them since they are not mainstream, even though they are well known to listeners of symphonic metal. Yeah, it is a shame.

There are various pop culture staples that, regardless of when you were born, you should just 'know' about them. Someone mentioned Bohemian Rhapsody, that is certainly one of them, so epic, unique and infectious. Maybe she may know some of the music, not by title and artist, but by the tune? She may have heard "We will rock you" but not made the association to the band. Unfortunate for her that she was born in the age of butt-music which only serves to stimulate butt-heads.

I once showed a friend's sister Still Alive
Her: When was this released?
Me: 2007, why?
Her: I thought so, this sounds real old
First, four years does not make a song old and why does this matter?!?
I almost killed her after that

Well I've actively tried to stay away from Muse. I've listened to a few of their songs and they're so... derivative. Not bad, but uncreative. And please don't try to prove me wrong, I'm sure there's that /one exception/ but even the biggest of snobs have that /one exception/ for Lady Gaga and the likes.

But if a child hasn't heard of this:

Then their parents are doing something very wrong.

THE CLERK IS A POD PERSON! GET OUT OF THE STORE IMMEDIATELY!

No really, it's an official pod person test. If they don't like Queen, they're infiltrators taking over.
What?...

Queen....Queen....that is the band with the gay bloke as the lead singer correct? (not that there is anything wrong with that). Never listen'd to them and never will probably.
It's true it does't matter, but Freddy Mercry wasn't gay.

OT: It is indeed weird that people haven't atleast heard of Queen, I mean it was huge and more important it's still great music till this day.
Just let her listen some Queen songs, she will know them, nearly everyone does.

Freddy Mercury was gay. He was, in fact, very, very gay. Pretty open about it, too.
