I hate Halo for making console shooters popular, but my arch nemesis would be CoD. I can't think of a single good thing about it. If you ask me what kind of things I hate in a game I point to it and go that. I dislike realism, wars, console shooters, kids playing mature games unsupervised, stupid DLC, and stagnate cashin releases and CoD is all of that and wildly popular and making other games want to be it.

Halo, for crimes against the FPS genre. This mess should be put to death in the most gruesome manner possible. The developers burned at the stake for their crimes. Can throw Gears of War on the same pyre.

Gears of war, the only fun I had in it was was from playing coop with a friend while making fun of the game. Even then we still got mad over certain parts. Playing the multi-player only made it worse once I realized that every match just came down to who ever grabbed the sniper rifle or managed to get off the melee kill first. I mean for gods sake it's a shooter yet I could unload an entire clip into an enemy as he's charging me and still lose because he threw his chainsaw into my face.

Commandos 3: Destination berlin. I LOVE the game series but DAMN they upped the difficulty on the third one.

I've spent over 5 hours on it and I'm still on the FIRST level on the FIRST campaign (There are 3).

SOOO HARD.

Final Fantasy VIII. I'm a big fan of the series, but I do not like this game and I will never like this game

I'd rather say you've had fans admitting they have no idea what objective means.

The story is utter shit and laughable (So there's vaults on other planets, wow, what a twist)
Opinion.
The characters are mostly one dimensional
Same could be said about a lot of other first person, undefined main character. Doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
The loot system literally tricks players into liking it
I've always thought Borderlands was quite upfront with how the looting system works. Again, whether you like it or not, is opinion.
The game uses meme's and pop culture references for its humor (utterly unforgivable in my eyes)
Opinion.
And worst of all, and I mean worst of all, gearbox steals shit and NO ONE CALLS THEM OUT ON IT
Lots of games "steal" from other games. Again, doesn't make them bad. Whether they're bad or not is, an opinion.
They stole their artstyle, their cover, and their FUCKING GAME OPENING
See above.

But it won't because apparently I'm the only one who cares about any of this, and shitty humor and laughable story is totally acceptable nowadays (especially since gameplay doesn't make up for it)
Different strokes for different folks. There are lots, LOTS of much, MUCH worse games out there.

OT: Hating a game is a waste of time. If you don't like it, don't play it. Vote with your wallet. I'd rather focus my energy on games that I actually like instead of wasting it on what, in your opinion, is a bad game. I really don't understand this need to actually hate a game. It's very weird to me.

Final Fantasy XIII.

Just... Final Fantasy XIII.

I've made so many posts about it already.

In fact, just a few days ago I went through all of the posts, took three of them and then put them all together into a response to a thread about Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels.

So yeah. That's my pick.
This. So much. It's sad too, because I love Final Fantasy in general, but Final Fantasy XIII just dropped the bar in every way. The combat is annoying and finnicky, the story makes no sense, the music is decent at best, and boring at worst, the characters are a bunch of anime stereotypes and the pacing completely sucks. It's just... bad. Very. Bad.

If I had to choose... It'd probably be Ratchet and Clank. I don't hate it, but it's basically my biggest opposing force. The story is bland, Ratchet is completely unlikable, Clank is not that great as well. The Gameplay also leaves a bit to be desired. It's just an overall Blandwich with only a few good spots in it. T

Before anyone tries to pick apart my statement, please remember this thread is based on Opinion.

Doesn't work. For someone to hate a game, they will have had to play that game, which means they'll have already purchased said game. Can't refuse to buy something you already have.

Also, the whole point of this thread is to ask people's opinions, so it's pretty lame of you to try to say that someone else's opinion is wrong.

Oh yeah, Final Fantasy IX is pretty much my favorite game of all time. Just makes it all the more disheartening that all of the things XIII does that are like earlier games in the franchise, it does so much worse than previous games in the franchise.

For instance, I'll wrap the story/characters/pacing all together and compare them to IX:
In both games, the story proceeds in a linear path with very little openness of the world around you for the first 10-20 hours. However, in the first ten hours of IX, the Queen of a kingdom has gone mad with power, tried to kill her daughter and overthrow the entire continent, spurred on by the words of a "weapons dealer" who is providing her with all of her power. In the first ten hours of XIII, everyone gets magical abilities and then splits up into pairs because of reasons, and Snow ends up getting kidnapped. And Lightning fights Odin.

In the first fifteen hours of IX, we've seen Vivi the black mage start questioning his origins and his future as a result of meeting lifeless drones that look like him, we've seen Princess Garnet get crushed by the weight of
the death of her mother and the destruction of her kingdom,
we've seen Captain Steiner question his staunch loyalty to the Queen in light of her actions, and begrudgingly admit that Zidane (the main character) might not be as terrible as his appearance might suggest, we've seen Zidane power through all of these events with a chipper attitude and it means all the more when he's knocked down emotionally.

In XIII, we see Hope vow to get revenge on Snow for something he couldn't even change, we see Snow act like a cocky douche or get flashbacks of him with Lightning's sister in which he exhibits barely any personality, we see Vanille act all happy and cooky to Sazh's sober apathy, and we see Lightning grimace until she tells Hope to stop whining so much. But there's no weight behind any of their interactions, because they never exhibit any other personality traits. Sazh is the only one who even comes across as a normal human being.

Even the forced character changing segments were better done in IX, because they don't generally last all that long. You're not spending two and a half hours running down a corridor as a character you can't empathize with, before quantum leaping into the body of another character who has no personality for two and a half hours.

Ech, I knew this would happen. And it's only Final Fantasy XIII that makes me get this way.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Its just so difficult to enjoy or get into. Ive taken several cracks at it, and just never got the will to see it through. Stealth and precision require finesse, and you can't achieve it with the horrible tools and controls it sticks you with. The only good thing that can be said for it is the central theme of human augmentation.

Oh, and Dark Athena takes second place.

And calling someone out for arguing with opinion in an opinion-based thread isn't a waste of time? And besides, sometimes you spend the money on what you think is a good game only to find out it was bad. Doesn't that validate the feeling of hate? Or you could just hate what a game represents, which i think was Yahtzee's reasoning for hating CoD: MW3 and BF3.

OT: I have a strange relationship with Saints Row: The Third. I loved Saints Row 2 so when it was sequel time i was really hyped to get back in the sandbox. The game seemed fine then and there, already then it felt like a downgrade from SR2 but i was still having fun so i brushed that niggling doubt under the mental carpet.

It wasn't really until a while later i realized how hollow the experience had really been, and i'd say that hindsight disappointment was even more bitter than if i'd realized it when i was playing the game.

So i guess Saints Row: The Third takes the crown, because it's a game i'll never return to because it tricked me into trusting it, only to later let me realize how poisonous the relationship had been.

I don't really have a game that I hate more than any other, but I do have a certain disdain and loathing for modern military FPS games, or as Yahtzee calls them, spunkgargleweewee. What bothers me the most about them is how bland, brown, and samey they've become lately. Sure, they have different stories and some might be interesting, but most of them have you feeding a bunch of turbans a fresh bowl of lead salad for dinner with virtually the same guns in very similar wrecked environments. Even the strawberry jelly smearing across the screen looks the same in all the games. There's also the fact that any deviation from the set path is often met with a swift death is, in my opinion, irritating and stupid. It's as if game publishing companies don't want to risk ANYTHING at all when making a profit and just resort to the same formula that they know works every time.

Either way, it doesn't matter what I say. The public at large will still gulp down this homogenized swill with a smile without a care for what's actually good.

DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion. Deal with it.

Pretty much most (not all) things made this gen. I am not a big fan of the direction games went. I thought every generation before this one was spectacular in every way, even if the last gen wavered somewhat. But now I only see homogenized garbage made to sell as many copies as possible. Rare is it you find a game made for the people who actually like that genre. Hell, most genres don't even exist anymore! (R.I.P. horror) And as much as I like FPSs, I didn't like them near enough to be as prevalent as they are now. Even people at 2012's E3 were yawing from the FPS fatigue going around. If it wasn't for Dust:an Elysian tail's gameplay and Borderland's 2 humor, I would have sold my 360 this year. Hell, considering what a snowball effect this seems to be, I think I'll probably be lucky to find ONE game I like on the Xbox next year.

We also lost way too many developers in the last transition, and I just don't think it was worth it. (R.I.P. Sega, Rare, Capcom, etc.) Oh sure, they are still alive... if you call that living.

Mario Strikers Charged Football. The online community used so many cheap tricks and when the basic premise of the game is to play dirt then it's pretty hard not to be annoyed. It's the only game that's made me tru to throw my controller in rage but sadly the Wii remote wrist strap stopped me in my tracks.

I hate the cheap shit they don't tell you about until after it happens, namely the Buzzard stealing my hat which results in me taking double damage until I manage to hit the bird somehow and yank it back,
Really? I never knew you could take double damage without your hat. I always thought it was cosmetic. :/

OT: Sonic 06. That game. That FUCKING game.

I was a huge fan of the Sonic Adventure series. I even enjoyed Sonic Heroes and (to a much lesser extent) Shadow the Hedgehog.

When I first heard of Sonic 06, I was pretty excited. When my dad, my brother and me flew down someplace for a tae-kwon-do tournament, I went to a local GameStop at a mall and bought the game. At the tournament, I saw a little kid there who also happened to like Sonic. I dug out my copy of 06 and showed it off to him. From what I remember he was awe-struck.

When I finally got home, I rushed to my room, placed the game in my 360 and I got excited. This was going to be the birth of the next generation of Sonic the Hedgehog! What could possibly go wrong?

...

Yeah you know the rest.

The sad thing is, that kid I mentioned probably went and bought the game because of me. And I probably crushed his childhood and his innocence. :(

Final fantasy 13, I really do hate this game, everything about it. I like final fantasy a lot and 12 was my favorite, then this thing comes out.

It even started my horrible habit of me not beating games.

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox.

After many an hour against a difficult boss and losing time and time again, I finally was winning against it perfectly not getting hit and dishing tons of damage. Then suddenly my xbox 360 turns off and flashes red.

Yes the game would not allow me to beat it and blitzed my 360 before I could beat it. Luckily it was under warranty still however I have not played a Ninja Gaiden game to this day.

Egoraptor was right about Gaiden.
I feel for you the same thing happened to me nothing worse than finally clearing a difficult section and then having the game freeze on you. The game was hard enough in parts but battling the game and Xbox was too much I changed mine eventually before finishing it, at least the game gets significantly easier after the first Alma battle though.

Dont know what my Arch Nemesis game would be but maybe Street Fighter 2 I mean I love it and am pretty good at it after the thousands of hours I have wasted playing it in my youth but no game has pissed me off as much and kept me coming back, goddamn Sagat I hate you so much I can still hear him now hyper hyper hyper uppercut goddamn so annoying. (Im pretty sure its Tiger but always sounded like Hyper to me)

i wont dismiss this by saying its your opinion. what i will argue is the "objectively" bad when alll you listed were opinionated complaints. show me how tis objectively bad and that statement has merit. I'm not saying you are wrong to hate it. Im saying you are wrong to call it objectively bad without proper proof.

OT: Majora's mask.... i want to love you...i want to believe the hype.. I want to say your uniqueness for a Nintendo game is good..... but...you just arent in my eyes.... I HATE YOU WITH A PASSION YOU PIECE OF SHIT. You're a terribly unfun, Horribly designed (in my eyes here), overhyped trash....and you are my most hated game.... please...die in a fire. It would be nice if you explained your opinions a little more.

Like. "Gearbox stealing shit" What do you mean with this? From where they "Stole all that shit"? "The loot system literally tricks players into liking it" What the fuck? How does it Trick us then?

Mainly those two. The others are a little more understable... somewhat.

And I honestly dont get how you dont like the Humor at all. I thougt it was actually pretty funny and friendly game at times, and that comming from me is just not something that happens everyday...

That begins said, Borderlands 1 is better than 2 is some aspects... but I dont think thats relevant right now.

Oh yeah, as for myself... I will take this opportunity to nominate Dragon fucking AGE as my nemesis game. It just fits so much... The worst of the very worst is in that fucking game. I will add additional details, but I am pretty sure most people already know why I hate it so much...

Dragon Age is my ultimane game nemesis. I just dont know how it even exists.
