There may have been a mix up here, perhaps you guys came first but while googling "notable irish inventions, I found this site [http://www.patentsoffice.ie/en/student_inventors.aspx], and this little passage:

I'm just going to google a bit more.

In 1620-1624 Cornelius Drebbel built and tested 2 submarines. The third model could stay underwater for 3 hours and carry 16 passengers.

It's really a no-brainer, to be honest. Because the computer is unarguably the invention that has changed people's lives the most! I'm pretty sure if Aliens arrived tomorrow and asked to see our best invention, it'd contain some kind of computational device.
