America made the first nuclear bomb, and the first shuttle that could feasibly sustain human life.
Wait, you're saying the nuclear bomb, something that inspired fear in an entire generation and had the capacity to destroy all life on earth, is America's greatest invention? Okay then! Remind me to never be alone in the same room with you.

Every country has it fair share of smart people, and sometimes, one of these geniuses creates something bloody amazing that everyone loves. So what is your favorite invention by someone in your country?

I'm from Sweden, and my favorites are 1. The fridge, and 2. Spotify.

An American invented the cell phone? I thought it was a Japanese thing. No, wait, they just did it better. ...Snap.

Buildings and pasteurized milk. I'm Maltese and yet these two's credits have been hijacked by bigger cultures.

You do know post-its were developed by someone who was looking for a new super-powerful super-glue right? He failed but realized the result of his failure was still useful.

Hehehe, I'm sure someone will quote me wrong, but I just had to say it. They teach that on our schools, anyway.

There may have been a mix up here, perhaps you guys came first but while googling "notable irish inventions, I found this site [http://www.patentsoffice.ie/en/student_inventors.aspx], and this little passage:

---Holland, John Phillip (1841-1914) Liscanner man, John Phillips Holland, is accredited with launching the world's first successful submarine, the 'Fenian Ram', in 1881. He also invented a mechanism for submariners to evacuate their sinking vessel.---

I'm just going to google a bit more. :)
In 1620-1624 Cornelius Drebbel built and tested 2 submarines. The third model could stay underwater for 3 hours and carry 16 passengers.
I did say there was a mix up. :L

The shuttle thing is wrong. It was the Russians. They beat us with first human, first woman, first dog and first space station in space. But we got the moon so lets call it even

Well, I'm from the UK, so I'm going to have to say, the computer =D

It's really a no-brainer, to be honest. Because the computer is unarguably the invention that has changed people's lives the most! I'm pretty sure if Aliens arrived tomorrow and asked to see our best invention, it'd contain some kind of computational device.

Yes, computers are British! The first programmable computer was built by Charles Babbage back in 1813: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytical_engine
