A tiger cub (wouldn't mind it growing either as long as your rules of "it's not going to eat me or anyone I love.. or have to be legally concerned with" apply :p ). When they're tiny, it's literally the cutest animal ever and when they grow up they're one the most gracious, awe-inspiring animals imo. That or a panther, same description applies really.

Also a koala. Endless supply of hugs ftw ^^

edit: oh and a sloth. Just to have something around the house that's lazier than me.

Gecko, easily.
Probably a side effect from playing Gex non-stop when I was a kid, but I've always loved geckos.
I'd want loads of 'em. Make 'em sit on the walls and ceilings and stuff. Creep people out when they walk through the house. Yeah...
But I'm cool if we're only allowed one. In any case, he'd be quieter than the little box of noise I call my cat.
To be honest.....kinda boring. The cooler ones hide almost all day, play mainly at night, and are fairly skittish. You'll almost never see them :-( And they're not really a critter you can play with, either. Many are very, very mean, and will break their tails at the slightest provocation. They bite, they run FAST, and will get places you couldn't reach even if your last name was Fantastic.

Unless, you get a Crested gecko, those are comparatively docile, but still may freak out and bolt into some hyper-dimensional corner of your house you'll never be able to reach in a million years (take it from me)...but, all-in-all, they're about as docile as a gecko gets. But they have a VERY specialized diet, and can be tough to feed. And, unlike other geckos, their tails are prehensile, and they don't shed/break them with the regularity of other geckos...

Not tryin' to rain on your parade, but just a warning. Geckos are...interesting, sure, but they're not all that great as pets, either. I had a particular fascination with them for a while and accumulated a number of breeds, and the biggest commonalities with them were being able to see them only in brief spurts before they bolted (at midnight, at that), and crazy tough living conditions to maintain...

Of course, there's always the Leopard gecko, and those are very chill and easy to take care of, but pretty common, as well.

For the wife, I'd say a ferret. She had one as a child, and she'd love to have one again.

For myself, I'd love to have a bernese mountain dog. They're perfect with kids... fluffy and lovable, and have the patience normally reserved for saints and stonework. Sadly we live in Florida (and just puchased a house, so leaving in less than 10 years is completely impossible, barring unforseen and unvoidable circumstances), so I could never, in good conscience, sentence such a thick-furred animal to this environment.

A giraffe or a zebra.
Or a penguin.
Or a wolf.
Or a tiger.
Or....

Forget it, I just want an entire freaking zoo.

I think it would be cool to have a pet platypus, although I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to since they're classified as endangered.

Or possibly a pangolin

They look so cool.
Holy crap, that is cool! It's like a heavy armor version of an armadillo.

A GIANT rabbit that is small enough for inside and big enough to ride around, is he is potty trained extremely well and could kill a T-Rex on command.

Actually, they really aren't all that vicious, wolves are very timid, and only attack if their young are threatend. We've got a half malamute half wolf, it is probably the biggest puss you have ever seen.

A crocodile. A big mean male crocodile whom I name Beethoven because he only emerges from the dark cavernous underground lake I have set up for him when I play classical music.
He eats people I don't like.

I would adore that animal.
