Deepest apologies if this has been discussed to death. It is something that interests me and I was looking to see what other people had to say.

Looking around, it is obvious that people tend to be partial to certain genres. After all, tastes will differ. But it seems that with most people I talk to, there are genres they do not care for either.

For me, that genre is FPS. I have played a lot of them from Doom to Quake 3 to Half-Life and on. While at times they were mildly entertaining, they never grabbed me like a good puzzle game or most fine RPGs do. It was not that I was bad at them, I just got a very limited amount of satisfaction from them. So when my brother suggested I give Fallout 3 a try, I was dubious. The only real reason I decided to dive in was because the story and setting was very interesting to me.

Pretty much immediately I was immersed into it. Unbelievably, it has become one of my favourite games. One of the best Christmas presents I got was the Game of the Year edition. Granted, there are some RPGlike aspects to it, but it is decidedly FPS in my book.

So! What games defy your own preferences? People who do not care for RPGs, is there an RPG you love? Sim haters, is there a sim title you can sink hours into?

Well, I hate turn based games (mostly) but FFX, 13 and Valkyrie Profile 2 are all games I love.

I also hate a lot of adventure games since I get bored with them easily, but games like Indigo Prophecy got me hooked instantly.

That can be called an adventure game right?

I'm not a fan of casual games, but games from PopCap like Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies are soo fun and addicting. I can play them all day.

RTS. Ground Control. That game chewed me up and spit me out, and I loved every minute of it.

I like stealth based games, but modern day stealth games being the stupid pieces of crap they are, I'd say I like adventure games most.

If you consider it an adventure game, it counts.

I loathed turn-based combat games like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or the Tales series of games. but having tried my hand at VII and 13 i'm starting to ease into it and eventually will enjoy them fully

Mario Kart is basically the only racing game I'll enjoy...

Star Ocean is turn based? Which games have you been playing, cause I'm fairly certain there were no turns involved.

Ah, that is a good one. I bet there are a lot of people who feel that way.

While we are at it. I know "tennis games" is not exactly a huge genre, but I loved Mario Tennis an ungodly amount. Later I thought maybe it was the tennis part I enjoyed so I tried other, real tennis games. And hated them.

I got two for the price of one, in Team Fortress 2 - I generally don't care for FPS and I hate online multiplayer, but that game was all kinds of fun.

I'm not much of a fan of sports or racing games, but I had a blast with SSX.

I hate sports games but I liked a silly football (soccer) game you could play in arcades some 15 years ago, where you could aim the ball to knock out cameramen behind the goal and things like that.

I hate Mini games, I especially hate games that are entirely composed of mini games and time sinks... Yet I love me some Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.

Any chance of figuring out what that was? That sounds freaking hilarious.

I generally hate sports games, but I do enjoy NHL 10 with a friend.

And for racing games, I actually only really like the sim (or mostly realistic) racing games. Mario Kart just doesn't do it for me. But, I am looking forward to playing Mod Nation Racers - tho mostly for the customization and track building.

And I like RPGs quite a bit, but FF 13 really didn't jive with me. I had to return it after sinking 30hrs into it... been pretty happy with BF:BC2 which I picked up with the trade in money.
