Terraria, no question. It's minecraft but with fun combat, interesting enemies, awesome weapons, and an actual progression system. Everything except the building sucks ass in minecraft.

I guess I'll have to say Pokémon. I tried to think of others but in reality I've played every Pokémon generation and loved all of them (even White *sigh*). I had around 650 hours played on Pokémon Sapphire by the time I was done with that so yeah, that's my answer.

"Lacking a Z-axis" is a very broad term. Do you mean as a gameplay mechanic (gameplay takes place on a flat plane) of visually (the game utilizes 3D models instead of 2D sprites)?

Over 90% of strategy and tactics games lacks a Z-axis that has any impact on the game, even the recent ones. Civ 5, Endless Space, Heroes of Might and Magic 6, to name only a few. RPGs frequently neglect to put it to any use as well, like with Dragon Age. On the other hand, there are plenty of old pre-3D games that used the Z-axis in their gameplay. The original XCOM springs to mind.

Odin Sphere. First game to make me say "Wow, look at those graphics". It's also great characters and storyline and is overall very fun to play.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Not only was it my first game, it's one my all-time favorites.

If you mean without the Z-axis perspective, it would be Castle Crashers. The programmer is Tom Fulp, founder of Newgrounds.com and the soundtrack is made by numerous audio submission regulars.

Gameplay-wise, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's my favourite fighting game because it's least like a traditional one.

I agree. I would also add Muramasa: The Demon Blade and hopefully adding Dragon's Crown upon its release.

"What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk; have at you!"

And with those immortal words begins Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.

It's the game that gave us half of the word "metroidvania". What else needs to be said?

This!! A million times over! Also Super Metroid. I can't think of anything that comes close. I suppose there were a few of each series that were also enjoyable but these started it all for me.

I love turn based strategy games. HOMM, Disciples, etc. But my favorite classic 2d sidescroller is probably Megaman X (or possibly Megaman 7... stfu it's actually really good). Megaman X just took platforming to a whole new level with the wall grabs and crazy air dashing and everything.

Fire Emblem I guess. I dislike the version like Parth of Radiance and Radiant Dawn since the fast pace during the battle phase is lost in the 3D translation.

As someone finds many good 2D games to have tighter gameplay and combat than many 3D games (Having 2D sprites with step animation plays a big part) I couldn't really call a favorite, i'll just say that the 2 2D games i'm enjoying atm are Teraria and Fortune Summoners.

I will add that most ppl who want to enjoy some the best that 2D has to offer had best get in to arcade emulation on MAME and retrogaming.

Probably the new Mortal Kombat assuming you mean 2D in a gameplay perspective.

Not sure really I really like a lot of 2D fighters and platfformers and RPGS and puzzle games and yeah Ill stop. Super Mario Bros 3 and Street Fighter 2 turbo will always be up there for me not sure if they are my favourite 2D games but they are pretty high.
